This is actually finally answering the original question, I just wanted to throw the two other answers out there because that's where I get the majority of my skirts (I really don't wear dresses, mostly because my husband prefers skirts most of the time and I have trouble finding dresses that we both like.
Here are some online companies which carry modest skirts (some of them also carry dresses):
Hannah Lise -They don't have a huge selection and some of their items are not very "classy" styles, but everything they sell is very modest.

I've been to some of those looking for a skirt for work. One problem is that I need a blue or black skirt that is 100% cotton and falls at the knees- nothing lower of higher and no slit. That is rather hard to find, most of these places usually go to the ground.

The problem that I have with dressing in long dresses all the time is that a lot of cults dress the same way. Look at that ultra concervative mormom bunch in Utah. They dress just like you. Muslims dress like you. (Not the ones you see on TV.) A lot of other cults dress like you too. You may think it is wrong to dress like the world but why do you think it is right to dress like cult people?
I asked my husband about the dress issue and told him what some of you said about your husbands preferring you to wear certain things. He said, this really surprised me, that it seemed those kind of men had control issues and should examine their motives. I wear jeans a lot in the winter and shorts in the summer. (I don't dress like Jessica Simpson, fyi.) I asked my husband if he thinks I am unfeminine or immodest and he laughed. I love to dress well for him but he would rather I dress for myself. He never goes shopping with me or picks out outfits. He trusts me that I will not go around dressed like a prostitute. There are a lot of Christians who wear jeans and shorts and sweats and are perfectly modest and feminine. I think the dress thing is a little extreme. I used to wear dresses only for a short period of time but came to see that it wasn't necessary. I think if you like dresses better than wear them. But, don't use scripture to say that it is the way to be modest. I once saw an overweight Amish woman bending over in her garden working. She really should've been in pants. The wind was blowing too.

I play paintball, boundball (volleyball on a tennis court) and ride a bicycle.
I love wearing skirts and dresses and wear them as much as possible. I have more skirts/dresses than anything else. I don't wear shorts I think they look awful on every single person I've seen wearing them, men and women. There are some things you just can't do in a dress/skirt.
Boundball, I usually am wearing a skirt/dress becuase my friends and I usually play right after church. I can play but it sometimes feels like a hinderance.
Paintball no way. I'm running around in the woods, rolling on ground, and tramping through mud. Yes, it's a very male sport and although I'm playing in the Florida heat I always wear jeans, not tight, then I can't move around, and a long sleeve shirt with a short sleeve shirt underneath. Paintballs sting when they hit you. My boyfriend loves the fact that I enjoy playing so he has no problem with it. We are usually on a team together.
I've tried riding a bicycle in a skirt/dress. If it is too long then it gets caught in the chain, gears, or brakes. If the skirt is short the wind blows it around for all to see things you don't want to be shown.
Just my two cents on the matter.
I would recommend these stores online to find modest, feminine clothing.

None of them are Christian or claim to specialize in modest clothing but they offer several nice selections toward these goals. The downside is that most of their clothing offerings are on the pricey side. Check out the Annex at Casual Corner for reduced price merchandise. All of these companies offer high-quality, superior craftsmanship in their clothing. That is part of the price you are paying for. It's nice to have a few of these types of clothes as they tend to last much longer through hundreds of washings and wearings.
You can find direct links to two of these sites from my blog. They all offer petite sizes, as well. A real bonus for me since I am "vertically challenged." Enjoy!
