Where to Find Dresses and Skirts Part 1

"Where can you find cheap dresses and skirts online? -Anonymous"

1. Thrift Stores

Well, I would encourage you to check out your local thrift store first. I buy about 50% of my clothes second-hand. If you know where to shop and how to shop at thrift stores, you can find some excellent buys. I am extremely particular when I shop at thrift stores. The item must be in like-new condition, it must be "my color" (I usually only wear clothes in my color palette-- Thanks to Lydia and Color Me Beautiful.), it must be something I really like, it must not be an out-dated style, and it must be a good brand (I make exceptions on this one if it is in brand-new condition and $0.99 or something!). Why so many rules for thrift store shopping? Well, because I don't ever want to look like I shop at thrift stores (and my husband's not real keen on that either!). My goal is to always look nice for my husband and wearing frumpy clothes that look like they are second-hand does not fit the bill!

I buy most of my tops for $0.99-$1.99 at the thrift store and skirts I will pay up to $3.99 for. So, most of the outfits I wear (I primarily wear skirts and tops, as that is what my husband likes best and I delight to please him!) cost around $4-5 total or under.

Find which thrift stores are in nicer areas of town and shop at those. Find when they have Dollar Days (most thrift stores do) and get there early on the first day of that sale!

Spoken like a true secondhand shopper! I agree.

If you wear dresses or skirts exclusively, the selection at thrift stores is often amazing--probably because they only get worn to church or special occasions.

I LOVE our thrift store (MCC Connections, Kidron, OH). Most of my sons' clothing comes from there as the staff is really picky about what is displayed. I volunteer as a cashier twice a month and I get to see lots of bargains that way. Many of my own clothes come from there, too. My biggest 'problem' with the thrift store is that it has spoiled me from shopping at GoodWill or at yard sales; I now cannot stand MESSY clothing displays at all! (ok, this does eliminate Old Navy, too, most of the time LOL). The store keeps me well stocked with bottles and feeding supplies, books, toys, and even an awesome backpack diaper bag with a foldout changing pad (3 dollars, thank you LOL). My husband teases me about how much I spend but he is really pleased that an entire outfit for me (minus shoes) usually costs around $5 instead of the $75 of my prebudget/premotherhood/two-income days.

Only because I'm curious - I think the question was whether you knew where one could find cheap skirt and dresses online...?

I agree! I get 99% of my clothing at thrift stores. Thankfully, almost every day ours has clothing for .99! I cringe when I have to pay 2.00 for a dress. :)

I'm probably not quite as selective as you... but I don't think I look like I'm dressed from a thrift store, as I don't care for that look either. :) Everything I buy is always in good condition.

Thanks for the link to my blog, Crystal!

Dressing in one's seasonal colors is indeed an art form. It's interesting to note that the major department stores and clothing designers carry clothing each season with colors that correspond to the colors of the seasonal color palettes. For example, in the autumn the colors tend to be muted, earth tones. A person with "autumn" coloring would look best in these same shades. These are the colors you will likely see now for the upcoming season's designs. I am a winter so my best colors are primary, true colors. They can be described as icy and vivid. During the winter months I have the easiest time finding clothing in my season's colors.

I try to wear my best colors everyday. Sometimes I will wear colors from neighboring seasons. I can wear some summer colors because they are cool colors along with the winter colors. For more on color in clothing check out the book Crystal mentioned, "Color Me Beautiful" by Carole Jackson. It was written in the 70's or 80's but the concepts presented in it are still applicable for today. The fashion plates and photos are out-of-style but the information presented is timeless.
