Adventures in Baby Feeding

Well, this week Kathrynne decided she was ready for table food! We had been holding her off because she had no interest whatsoever, only disgust for solid foods and I also wanted to wait until she was sufficiently potty-trained, if possible.

Since she is sufficiently potty-trained (Read: She prefers to go on the toilet rather than in her diaper and provided I am consistent enough to take her, she has few "accidents" -- I'm anxious for her to be old enough to communicate with me more!), I was just waiting until she seemed "ready" for food.

Well, this week was the week. I'm not sure what made the change, but she went from not ever putting things in her mouth to now wanting to eat anything and everything in sight! Anything and everything, except the homemade baby food I have been offering her, that is! I'm wondering if waiting until she was a little older will mean she will just transition straight into table food??

Regardless, we are having fun adventures letting her try out different foods. It's a whole new phase of motherhood. I miss having a newborn baby but I'm delighted at the little girl she is growing into. She is just totally precious and the older she gets, the more precious she becomes.

Oh, being a mommy is just the most wonderful thing. Can't think of anything much more grand, except for being a wife! Speaking of which, I must run along. My King (aka: Husband) needs some victuals himself.

She just might prefer going straight to "grown-up" foods rather than baby food. My littlest siblings were like that. Mia hated baby food, but loved rice, slighly squashed peas, butternut squash, and mashed potatoes!

I can't remember if we talked about what Yehoshua did, but, since he had some teeth when we started (I can't remember how many... at least 4) we just mashed up most vegetables, which left them still a little chunky, or, cut them up into bite-sized pieces. We started with veggies and after he took an interest in them, moved on to other things. I never used a babyfood grinder, and only ever used the blender on two things, squash and asparagus (which is stringy ;D), neither of which he particularly cared for in that form :D.

Does Kathrynne have namy teeth yet? I think sometimes babies put things in their mouths when they're teething, or just when they're exploring things! Yehoshua put lots of stuff in his mouth long before we started him on solids. But when we did give him solid foods, it took him several months to actually start eating much. Then he weaned himself in just a few months' time. So, you never know what to expect ;). I would say just go with what seems best. :D If she isn't really eating solids very well, it's not the end of the world... she can always get all of her nutrition from breastmilk, which is the "perfect" food for babies ;).

Crystal,

Ok, I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the fact that at 8 months you have Kathrynne already potty trained? Is that right, or did I mis-read?

I thought my kids were early and easy to train (all before about 2ish), but I've never heard of 8 months.

Thank you for your blog. It's always got interesting material. And I'm really enjoying the "random" question even though I haven't responded to one myself yet.

i am a new reader so i was wondering if you had discussed the infant potty training that you are doing at all on your blog? i have read some books, but didn't find out about it until my son was too old. he potty trained easily at 2.5 when we were both ready. but, i really want to use this method in the future with any children that the Lord may bless us with.

thanks for your blog. i have been enjoying reading it.

George didn't like homemade babyfood. I could never get it smooth enough so I would get store bought baby food. I know a lot of people look down on this but I was given it and I'm OK. I think it was the chunky texture that he didn't like. I did give him regular applesauce and cream of wheat with the additional iron. I'm paranoid that he doesn't get enough iron because he likes milk so much. Now at 14 mos he eats everything from pizza to chicken to waffles. (He loves maple syrup!)He is also a big butternut squash and sweet potato eater but I go easy on it or I will be sorry when I change his poopies the next day.
BTW, is Kathrynne potty trained as far as #2 goes?

Kathrynne is a doll--You know when to capture those picture moments! Just an idea about offering food--We were encouraged to begin with rice cereal for breakfast, then offer the same food item (first--all the vegetables before moving on to fruits) for a few days or a week at lunch and dinner to be sure the food agreed with them and to rule out food alergies. This also helped our babies acquire a taste for that food before moving on to a new one. Now that most are grown, everyone in our family likes every sort of food and the more variety the better. It is a joy to cook for your family when they rave about whatever you fix. My husband sets the example for our children in this. He grew up on Spam (the food item, not barraged e-mail messages), fried bologna and hot dogs. Now, even to this day, in prayer before the meal he thanks God for the "love and preparation" that went into the meal. Our children have learned from his appreciation to like whatever they get. We never turned up our nose at food items when our babies were trying new ones (even peas or broccoli that smelled yukky). Babies will pick up on your emotions and will think it's bad before they even taste it. If you smile, coo, and convey how good it is, they will probably agree with you and like whatever you give them. (:

Thanks, everyone for your comments!

Mrs. Hayden: Thanks for the encouragement! We just stuck with carrots once per day all last week and are moving to sweet potatoes this week. We want to take it slowly and don't want to create havoc with her digestive system. We're still trying to figure out how to teach her to like what is set before her and not just want whatever we are eating instead. We'll have to keep working on that!
