Kathrynne Update

Some lighter blogging fare for today... I'm rather worn out from this week and my brain and body are in low gear this afternoon. Completing a book is always a rather monstrous task that takes much more time than you can ever expect. We are enjoying a low-key extended weekend.

Kathrynne has been busy learning many new things recently among them:
  • Learning how to crawl (instead of scoot, like she had been doing for some time!).
  • Pulling up on things and crawling over things.
  • Getting into a sitting position from lying down.
  • Learning to wave "bye-bye".
  • New sounds: "A-da" (Which Jesse is just positively sure means "da-da"!), "bo-bo"
  • Potty-training: We take her after every feeding and she goes 99.9% of the time. I have been rather surprised myself at how little effort it took for her to learn this. And I don't really know where to go from here. I think I will just try and be consistent with this and see where it leads.
  • Sitting still through entire church services. I don't know if this habit is there to stay, but she's been doing really well at learning to sit still.
  • Obedience: We're still working on helping her to understand this concept, but I think she is gradually getting it. It is a delight to see her want to honor and please us.
  • Transitioning from bottle (with water-- she loves drinking water!) to a sippy cup.

She turned 7 months last week. She still has no interest in solid foods, other than wanting to smear them around on the table and her hands. The three times we have tried to feed her, she has gone through awful spitting contortions! So, we have decided to wait a bit longer.

You know...all 5 of my baby's would take ONLY water from a sippy when weaning, I really think that during this time many babies just cannot deal with the fact that 'milk' in whatever form they've had all this time can be obtained from other sources or something... :)

What a doll she is!! Thank you so much for sharing news. :)

Every one of my nieces and nephews (and most of the babies I've watched) was the same way with solids before their first birthday. One mother whose child I watched made a sort of thin puree, consisting of one veggie and water, to be sucked in a bottle. The idea was to get baby used to the taste of foods first, before moving on to the actual solid food, because tackling both taste and texture all at once can be difficult for baby. It worked for her, so... just a thought. :)

On that note, I held a brand new, two and a half week old baby today, a little boy... so sweet! Still has that new baby smell. LOL

And my eldest brother and his wife just had their first baby (my third nephew). I'm going to visit them next month for week to be mommy's helper. :) I'm so excited I can hardly stand it!

We used water for lots of things after six months. Ozzie LOVED to drink it from a straw (Gramma's special trick). We solved his "troubles" with ice water instead of food bribes LOL. Even now, at age two, he has no real taste for juice; he much prefers water or milk. He even takes a water bottle to bed with him in case he gets thirsty.

Fun! Kathrynne sounds like she's really moving along and tackling new challenges :D The obedience thing gets easier and easier the older they get :D

I couldn't get our daughter to drink water AT ALL until she was off her sippy cups .... which happened last month.

Kathrynne sounds just adorable. Conquering her little world :-)

Thanks for the updates on Kathrynne's development. At least we can hear about what she is doing even if we aren't able to see her.

About spitting out food that you try to feed her: babies have what's called an extrusion reflex that causes them to thrust their tongue out when something is placed in the mouth. It goes along with the sucking reflex they are born with to nurse from mother. That may be partly why she "has gone through awful spitting contortions" when you try to feed her solids. You probably already knew about this:) I would encourage you to keep trying and eventually she should start "liking" the real food.

Also, some babies are more sensitive to textures than others. You could try other textures of food such as pureeing it more thorougly. I think the key is to keep trying a little at a time. She will catch on with this new stuff being put in her mouth. It's so much fun to watch a baby learn and grow. Now all we need are some new pictures of her!

Great to hear about Kathrynne. George started eating solids at about 6-7 mos and hasn't slowed down yet. He loves food especially meat. He said his first word yesterday. He said very clearly, "Right there." He has been babbling ma-ma and da-da for awhile but I don't think he relates those words to mommy or daddy. He says da-da when he's happy and ma-ma when he's whiney. I think the "right there" comment is because we are always asking him where something is and then we point the object out and say, "Right there, George." The only juice I give George is watered down apple juice because the sugar can be bad for their teeth. My husband had his front teeth rot and needed oral surgery at two yrs old because his parents gave him juice in a bottle all the time. George loves milk too. But I am careful that he gets plenty of iron because mild babies tend to be anemic. Well, you all can probably tell that Crystal and I are first time moms.
