Getting Teeth Late

Jessica said in response to the teething post:

"Be forewarned that often times getting teeth late in life could result in problems later on. $$$"

I've never heard of this before and would love more information. Jessica or anyone else?

I was told by both my orthodontist and my regular dentist that often times getting teeth later in life makes you more prone to orthodontic problems later in life as far as teeth not wanting to fall out, or the timing causing some pretty painful problems that may result in surgery and braces.

As a child I got my first set very late in life, and it resulted in me having to have four pulled when I was 6, and then having to have surgery and major orthodontic work in high school, including surgery. I will be having surgery again soon.

My oldest daughter's teeth came in very late -- I think she had one at age one year -- one front tooth didn't come in until she was 2. She didn't lose her first baby tooth until she was 7. She has had some strange teeth experiences including a "double" baby tooth (2 small teeth in a spot meant for 1); and an extra baby tooth which grew in when a baby tooth fell out, and the adult tooth simultaneously grew in behind the extra baby tooth. (The extra baby tooth had to be removed and then the adult tooth moved forward into position. We had a narrow escape when one dentist wanted to take out the tooth in the back, which turned out to be the adult tooth --always get a second opinion on such things!) Her last baby tooth was finally removed when she was 15 as it showed no signs of leaving and she was having surgery anyway (for a jaw cyst!). She needs braces at some point but strictly for minor cosmetic reasons, so at least that's not a big deal :). Anyway, this is all strictly anecdotal but in her case there was a correlation between late teeth and "tooth issues." My other children all had teeth come in earlier and have not had any problems whatsoever.

laura,

I think you are refering to fused teeth, when teeth grow in fused together, two in one space. My brother, who also got his teeth late in life, had this issue. One tooth that was fused, didn't develop an adult tooth to replace it, and so a false tooth had to be made in it's place.

Orthodontics have gotten so expensive.

I am a mother of 3 children with "late" teeth...don't believe the hype. My oldest, 22, has beautiful teeth (no braces or anything) and my daughter has nice teeth too, WITH a baby tooth (eye tooth) still in....went to the ortho for that and it is another long story, but it isn't a problem tooth wise.

My youngest, 2, had his teeth come in a little late, but I also nursed him until he weaned about 3 weeks ago.....his teeth are PERFECT! The dentist said the longer you nurse the better, because it forms the jaw and sets the teeth the way they are meant to be. So Crystal, I think you are still nursing, so I would keep it up. The longer the better. :-)!!!! C.

I agree with Cheryl. I got my teeth late - didn't get my first tooth until I was over 1 year old. None of my teeth had to be pulled and I didn't need braces, in fact, the dentist said that later teeth are actually better and usually healthier. I have only had one cavity. My husband on the other hand got his teeth early and his mouth is a nightmare....

I think that it is mostly genetics and diet that affect the outcome of your teeth. (see Weston A. Price's book on Nutrition for more info..)

Hmm. Interesting.

I just pulled my last baby tooth this year. The adult tooth grew in behind it instead of on top so it never pushed it out. I messed around with it till I got it loose enough to pull out. I was hoping the adult one would move into place, but so far that hasn't happened. So I have a minor gap... and that tooth is a bit behind the others. Oh well. Orthodontist work has never been in the budget.

Well, the main thing I can think of to this is: so what are you gonna do about it? (a nice way of saying "So what?!")

You can't make teeth come when they don't want to. And later you see what the tooth situation is and you deal with it.

I guess I don't see the value in this idea....am I missing something?

Now that I can comment... :)

It doesn't seem to me that Kathrynne is all that "late" in getting her teeth. I have heard from at least one person that getting teeth later means they will be healthier. Yehoshua got his early, but I'm not really worried... all you can do is take good care of your teeth, whenever they do appear :D
