Teething Babies
Kathrynne is teething for the first time... yes, she's almost 9 months and she still doesn't have any teeth. Jesse was starting to wonder if was ever going to get any teeth at all.
Needless to say, my usually very happy and contented baby is not happy at all. Poor thing. For those of you who've been through this before, I'm sure you know what I mean! You feel powerless to help them and they can't understand why it hurts so badly.
Any suggestions or tips on what has worked for your teething babies? I'm all new at this. We tried cold washcloths and cold slices of pears, rocking, and trying to distract her with her favorite toys. She didn't seem to really like any of those at all.
She's never been sick before in her life (I'm very blessed to have such a healthy baby!) so maybe that is why it has been harder for her (and for me!).
Jesse finally got her some baby teething gel. It seems to help her some, at least so that she can sleep. I'd love to hear other suggestions! Thanks for your help!

Aww, that must be hard!
One of the gifts a neighbor gave my s-i-l was a face cloth with rubber corners on it. The baby can hold on to the cloth and chew on the corners at the same time. :) I know my neighbor and s-i-l both liked to use them for teething babies. My s-i-l also used gel.
Have you tried those teething rings that you stick in the freezer?
Yes, we have done the frozenish wash cloth. The best thing for us has been Zweiback toast. Both my babies loved it and it seemed to satisfy. Hang in there! Each milestone brings new joy...and new reasons to worry. :) Welcome to motherhood.
You could try Hylands Teething tablets - a tiny homepathic tablet that dissolves on the baby's tongue. You could probably find them at a health food store. I think my mom had some once for the little ones in the family. :)
P.S. Your sale page link doesn't seem to be working... I can't wait to see everything on sale! ;)
Thanks! I just fixed the sale page. I had just changed something and re-uploaded it and I think it had gotten messed up. So, thanks for letting me know so I could fix it.:)
Poor baby!!!!!! My 3rd didn't get any teeth till she was 10 months (after her brothers had gotten them at 7.5 months and 5.5 months!). A friend of mine had twins that didn't get teeth till they were about 17 months!!!!!
Anyway! I've had friends rave about the Hyland's tablets, but they didn't really do anything for us. :-( And now that I know more about homeopathy, I won't ever be using them again.
Frozen washcloth, maybe a paci to chew on?????
Honestly though when mine have been just absolutely miserable, I finally just break out the ibuprofen. :-(
With all that you have tried I wouldn't hesitate to just give her some Tylenol at night & lots to chew on.
Careful with those Hyland's Teething Tablets. They have Bella Donna (sp?) in them. You can do a search on it. It has been used to kill people. It slows the breathing down. I can't remember everything. Anyway, my thoughts are, "What if there is stuff going on (other health problems) a parent might be unaware of and then they give the child these tablets that slows the breathing and who knows what else?" I would consult your doctor. There is a very low amount of it in there, but why chance it?
Poor baby. :( Since I don't have kids, I'll use my sister as a reference on this.
When my nephews were teething, my sister had these teething rings filled with gel that freezes. They kept my nephews occupied and fairly happy and pain-free. (Lindsey mentioned these rings, too, so I don't want to take all the credit for this suggestion. :)
For bedtime and particularly bad pain, she also had a numbing gel she applied to their gums. Hope that helps!
My son started teething at 2 months and we didn't get teeth in until he was 5 or 6 months. Yeah, not fun.
I would suggest, like you said you got, baby oregel, and also the nighttime oregel. It is a bit stronger and seemed to help him when the pain was really bad. Once while we were getting that, a lady in the store told us that with her grandaughter they started using clove oil and it worked so well they would never use oregel again. I didn't try it because my son was so little, but since Katherine is older.....? Maybe something you can check out anyway.
Will be praying for you!
Jeremiah has 8 teeth already!
I made sure I gently rubbed his gums each day and of course his frozen teething rings. Each time I'd hand him one he'd say, "Mmmm"
Infant Motrin was good too, he really liked the taste and he did better.
We used the Hyland's teething tablets. They worked better for my babies than baby Tylenol or baby oralgel. Talk to your DR about this first, just in case. Rubbing the gums helps. Zeiback toast is also helpful.
Wow, there are a lot of conflicting opinions out there on the teething tablets:) Both my babies loved them and they really seemed to help. We used tylenol, too, but our pedia. recommended against using numbing gel - at least not much of it - because it could potentially numb there throats, making it easier to choke. So I didn't use it at night or when they were eating.
1. They make a homeopathic formula that did me pretty well when I had teeth issues.
2. cold washclothes to gum on
be forewarned that often times getting teeth late in life could result in problems later on. $$$
I baby-sat a boy that didn't start getting teeth until he was over a year old. =) I don't think nine months is uncommon.
My mom used to put our water-filled teething toys in the fridge to let them get cold, then she gave them to us to chew on. Ahhh! =)
This also helped the boy I mentioned above.
I would try Tyleno if she is really uncomfortable. I am very wary of homeopathic methods. Though, I am not at all familar with Hylands. I never used oragel because it never go that bed. George has a binky so I think that that helped a lot. I did have oragel on hand incase it got bad. I basically stuck with the chewy toys and toys you put in the fridge. He got his teeth early so it wan't as difficult. I can imagine it might be harder if the child is older. Hope you find something that works.
