Weight-Loss Challenge

This is rather off-topic (not like my blog has one main topic-- My husband says this blog is very "ecletic." I guess that's because I'm eclectic and I'm a woman and I can't stay on any one topic for long! There are hundreds of topics which interest me, so this blog provides a forum for me to write down whatever is on my mind this hour.)...

But Candy's having a weight-loss challenge, for anyone interested. I'm going to try to participate, though I don't need to lose any weight, to have the accountability to regularly exercise and also eat more fresh fruits and veggies (something that's harder to do in the winter).
As Christians, our bodies are the temples of the Lord and we have a responsibility to take care of them properly. This means proper rest, hygiene, exercise, and nutrition. Of course, we do not want to exalt health over holiness, but health is important! As Scripture says, "Bodily exercise profiteth a little..."

I'm not into fad diets, but I do think that striving to maintain a healthy weight for your size and BMI is important. You have a much better chance of feeling better, having more energy, and living a healthier life.

A friend recently wrote and asked for some advice on weight loss and here's what I told her:

-Drink lots of water-- all day long. If you drink 12-14 glasses of water per day (and don't drink carbonated beverages or lots of coffee), you are not usually going to struggle with many weight problems. I try to always have water with me no matter where I am.

-Limit sweets and carb intake. Eat more wholegrains, fresh fruits and veggies, and protein.

-Only eat when you are hungry and then only eat enough to pleasantly satisfy yourself.

-Exercise at least 15 minutes everyday.

Also, read my post on French Women Don't Get Fat.

Carbonated beverages have so many empty calories. I do drink coffee but only 1-2 cups a day (when I'm not pregnant). Coffee, in moderate amounts, is actually good for you. But soda is just so bad. People, especially kids, drink way too much of it.

Soda is pretty much liquid candy.

Crystal - I got a kick out of this post! ; ) I'm gonna have to let Brigette know about this one! Hey -we ought to do "Miss Craig" again sometime...after you go to Krispy Kreme!: )

I totally agree with the previous posts about soda/pop. People do drink way too much of it. I've noticed while I've been out grocery shopping that almost every other person has some kind of soda/pop in their shopping cart. How sad! And it's really bad when you see people drinking it at breakfast!

yeah, too much soda pop drinking! almost everyone you see is drinking it. Ick, I probably drink one can a month. and would go for something else first like lemonade.
Thank you for linking to your "why french women don't get fat" post because I was looking for that again!

Martha: My exercise is very simple-- brisk walking while pushing Kathrynne in her stroller or indoor calisthenics. I'm especially fond of sit-ups. :)

I do a lot of walking as we have a dog and she has tons of energy! If I don't walk her for at least an hour a day she's a terror in the evenings. But I enjoy it, gets us both out of the house. I even have little booties for her feet when it snows....aren't I silly?

I had to give up sugar years ago because my teeth were suffering. It was hard but so worth it. I still have a treat every once in awhile but in general I stay away from sugar: no candy and NO POP. Pop is so incredibly bad for you. And I must say the sugar-free life is much easier with this low-carb craze. They have sugarfree everything these days.

The one food I absolutely refuse to eat is ice cream. Ice cream is about the worst thing you can put in your body.

I think it's wonderful to maintain a healthy weight and to eat right, however, as a former anorexic I also know that we can become just as obscessed about every calorie we put into our mouths, thus, not eating enough. Our society worships thin, waiflike figures and as Christians we need to be careful not to allow those unrealistic standards to become our own. God's word says that our beauty should not come from outward adornment but from the inner beauty of a quiet, gentle spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. I am certainly not saying we shouldn't care about our bodies or eat sensibley, but I am saying that in all things we need to be doing it in a way that brings honor and glory to the Lord....for some of us that means eating less....but for others it means not being afraid to eat a little more.
