The Wonders of Modern Techonolgy
For those of you with high-speed internet, do you have Skype?
I know I'm a little behind the times, but it takes my sister moving halfway around the world for us to venture into new realm like talking on the computer instead of on the phone. We finally got it set up last week and my sister and her husband called the other night. It was weird for our computer to ring instead of the phone. But, for being halfway around the world, the reception was clear as could be.
Best of all, Skype is free to download and use. Beats using phone cards any day! It makes the $20/month we pay for DSL seem even more reasonable to have free long-distance calling to Taiwan!
I wonder if telephone lines will soon be obsolete?

Whatever you do, DON'T get rid of your land-line phone!
#1 Are phone calls from puters traceable, like if you call 911? I can't say for sure, but I don't think so.
#2 You can't phone from your puter in the event of a power failure.
If you want to use it as a secondary phone, or for all your LD, that's great. But DON'T make it your only phone!
We've already seen companies minimize their land line offerings and options, and the prices have shot up. Companies that used to make their living with land lines have merged or faded out...
We have friends who are missionaries in Costa Rica and we use Skype to talk with them! We even hooked up a camera and used IM to see them. It's great! And free!!
We do still have our land line. If the electricity were to go out, you need a land line for an emergency. Even cell phones won't work then.
