Five Ordinary Men, An Extraordinary God!
While I'm blogging about The End of the Spear, I wanted you to know that I, in no way, want to discredit this powerful story of men who were willing to risk their lives for the sake of the Gospel. My husband and I watched Beyond the Gates of Splendor a few months ago and were very touched. This is the real story with the real people. I would much rather recommend you consider seeing this documentary instead of The End of the Spear. (Please note: There is some tribal nudity and graphic details. I would say it is not appropriate for children and only for an adult audience. It also would be more appropriate for those who were already familiar with the story itself. Here's a review and here's another review. Always do your research before viewing a movie -- especially when viewing with your children!)
In my opinion, books are always better than movies, so I would even more highly recommend that you read together as a family books like Shadow of the Almighty and Through Gates of Splendor.

There is also the book "The End of the spear" which I have not read yet about this story and a Trailblazer as well as many other biographies writen in a way for younger readers to understand. I think Heroes then and now series has one also. I remember as a 10 year old learning about the tribe they went to and the story, I have never seen a movie about them, but was struck again and again about the story. If someone killed my dad or husband would I be able to forgive enough to minister to them?
There was also a picture diary of Elizabeth Elliot's she had got, but it was NOT a book to have laying around as there was alot of nudity shown, even though they were careful in what they showed, that is the way they used to dress
I just think the whole thing is a shame that such a wonderful story has all the conterversy. I never go to theaters and may never see the movie (probably not, but still..)
Crystal, I love the documentary as well as the movie. It's interesting that you recommend "Beyond The Gates" despite the nudity that is considered somewhat questionable in "End of the Spear". I'm not sure if you realize that the documentary actually has far more graphic nudity than the movie has at all. In the movie, the tribal women are completely covered. I just found that interesting, but you may not have realized it since you haven't seen the movie.
Hi, Leah! I did realize that and that is why I am cautious to recommend it and prefer to encourage people to read the books (and, be careful about the books, too, they have pictures in them that might need to be censored for younger eyes).
If someone has to watch something, though, I would rather they watch Beyond the Gates beccause it is the actual footage. You see the tribe go from their heathen state and turn to Christ -- one of the effects of which is that they are then clothed. It is not play-acting. It is actual footage. I wish there was no nudity at all, though, of course.
My biggest problem with The End of the Spear is not the nudity, though. I think that has been apparent in my posts. From what I understand, there is some, but it is not as much as it could have been. But, it does bother me more to have nudity by someone who is play-acting, than nudity from an actual heathen tribe. Someone else might disagree with me on this, that's just my personal feeling.
I think we need to be very cautious about any and all movies -- the entertainment world is overtaking our culture. I prefer a good book to a movie anyday. Much more intelectually stimulating!
