Ringing in the New Year

We had a most delightful New Year's Eve celebration. We got together with six other families at the home of some dear friends of ours. Some of the families we had never met before, but, despite that, it was a truly blessed evening and the bond of Christian love united us together.

We began the evening with snacks and games. The first game was a hilarious game of "Open the Box." We were in a circle around the room and a plate with two dice was passed around. Each person had to roll the dice and pass it on. If they rolled a 7, they had to put oven mitts on and try their hand at opening up the box. Although it seemed a fairly simple thing to do, it soon became apparent it was easier said than done...

We started off with a rather large box that was wrapped and the securely taped with packing tape. Once the big box was finally opened, there was a smaller box.

And a smaller box.
And a smaller box. Then a package. Then a smaller package. Then a tiny package. We were rolling on the floor in laughter by the time it was done. The goal was to find the final prize inside, and there were some very competitive people in the group. As people kept rolling 7's and changing places and more and more packages kept being found inside the larger packages, it became very amusing! Especially seeing the men try to tear into a well-taped package with oven mitts on!

After that, we played a unique rendition of team Scrabble which turned out to be a "make up the rules as you go" sort of game. It was fun inspite of the fact that the rules were constantly changing and no one seemed to no which rules we were supposed to be playing by. I finally resorted to cheering and snapping pictures.

We had a very enjoyable time of singing hymns while Amy and I accompanied on violin and accordian. I'd never played with an accordian so that was fun! I always enjoy the opportunity to get to play instruments with others. I hadn't brought my music stand, so my violin case is being used instead here...

The last part of the evening, we spent sharing what God has done in our lives this past year, encouraging one another with Scripture, and sharing our goals for this next year. Then we spent a long time praying and dedicating the new year to the Lord and asking Him for grace to be able to fulfill the goals we felt He had laid on our heart. What a precious time!

An accordian makes such beautiful music, yet you do not see it played very often. I get to hear it alot as it is a very common instrument in the Russian church.
The box game sounds like fun! So, did only people who rolled a 7 get to try to open the box or was it just them that had to try with oven mitts?

How fun! Crystal, at what age did you start learning the violin? I am thinking about lessons for my daughters in the coming years.

Marhta: Yes, only the people who rolled a 7 got to open the box and everyone had to use the oven mitts!

Jenna: I started violin when I was 10. Wish I had started sooner, looking back. But that was how it worked out!

I have found a college student that will start kids at 4! We're not there yet but it's good to keep in mind. I started flute at 7 and really value the "earlier the better" principle when it comes to music. I'm not sure if we should begin with the piano as so many suggest...or branch out a bit from the traditional. :)
