Washing clothes is part of my grand task
I'm mothering young children who some day will fill important and useful spheres in life, and washing clothes is part of my grand task in caring for these souls who shall live forever. -- Elizabeth ElliotI have this quote taped to the wall of my laundry room. Now, in reality, I don't really detest laundry all that much. In fact, there are lots of things I dislike much much more than laundry, like washing dishes, or scrubbing the bathtub or cleaning up the garbage the dog has gotten into. But the reason I like this quote so much, is that I am inspired by this wonderful woman of faith to do the daily monotonous things that God has called me to do, even the plain old laundry, as an act of love for my Lord and my children.
It is much easier to complain in this world than to always be giving thanks for all things, and this quote reminds me, calls me back to that root of gratefulness and away from self-pity and conceit. I AM mothering young children, and someday they WILL fill important and useful spheres in life, according to God who has called each of us, and yes, washing clothes, along with scrubbing the bathtub, washing the dishes and cleaning up after the dog, is part of MY calling as caring for these precious souls (well, maybe not necessarily regarding the dog) who shall live forever.
I am encouraged when I read this quote every day, sometimes several times a day, to be a mother to the very best that I can, and then even beyond my best, to Christ's best. To be that real, live genuine Christian my children need desperately to see in this crooked and perverse generation, and to shine with the love of Christ and attitude of thanks in all that I do, especially laundry.
