Married men earn more

If anyone has been trying to figure out how to help your husband earn more, now you have the answer from this interesting study:
LONDON - Married men earn more than bachelors so long as their wives stay at home doing the housework, according to a report on Wednesday from Britain’s Institute for Social and Economic Research.

Academics Elena Bardasi and Mark Taylor found that a married man whose wife does not go out to work but is primarily responsible for the cooking and cleaning earns about 3 percent more than comparably employed single men.

But that wage premium disappears if wives go out to work themselves or don’t do most of the housework.

Does the study account for taxes? I wouldn't be surprised if that alone can make the difference... or is this before taxes?

This is SO interesting... in my family law classes, our professors were always emphasizing this point. I know that it made a lot of unmarried young lawyers start thinking seriously about marriage!

They also emphasized a young man's increased social standing, happiness, and reduced stress level in general if he were married.

On the other hand, my professors would also mention intersting statistics that showed that while a man's quality of life tended to jump at the beginning of a marriage, a woman's quality of life did not increase in the same proportion until much later in the marriage... in general.
