TVs vs. trees
Thanks to blog reader, Shannon, for alerting me to this new study:
Why am I not surprised?PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Americans are less interested in spending time in natural surroundings like national parks because they are spending more time watching television, playing video games and surfing the Internet, according to a study released on Tuesday.
The study, for The Nature Conservancy, found per-capita visits to national parks have been declining for years.
Nature Conservancy President Steve McCormick said the study suggests Americans and their children in particular are losing their connection to the natural world.
"When children choose TVs over trees, they lose touch with the physical world outside and the fundamental connection of those places to our daily lives," McCormick said.
I only have one thing to say: do your children a favor and teach them that there is more to life than technology. And please don't buy an iPod toilet paper holder. Your children deserve better.

Our family stopped going to national parks when they started charging $5-10 to park at them. We still go to plenty of local parks and state parks since they lifted the parking fee on state parks.
I agree with the above poster, it may have something to do with the high charges also!
I know though that TV and electronics have alot to do with it also. I was all week at a Junior high camp cooking and a couple of the other cooks had brought some iPods and computers along. They were the children's best friends! They would much rather have watched movies or listened to music then played outside if no one made them. They had fun once they got out there......

This reminds me of one of the very best parenting books I have read..."For the Childrens Sake" by Susan Schaeffer MacCauley (Sp ??). We are taking the love of learning and the love of creativity out of our children when we saturate them with all of the latest technology, TV and computers!!
