Hairstyle help

I have a rather insignificant question, but I would love some help. I am growing my hair out. It is now at shoulder level. Usually what drives me to keep getting it cut short are these summers. I would really like to know what other women do to keep their hair from bugging them during the hot months. And I mean besides a pony-tail. After a while I get sick of the pony-tail as does my husband. -Kelly
Since I'm no hairstyle expert (you'll most often catch me with my hair in a pony-tail!), I thought I'd open up the floor here. Would anyone care to share their favorite feminine hairstyles which would work for shorter hair? If you'd like to share detailed instructions and pictures, post it on your blog and send the link to me or else you can email me the description and pictures and I'll post it on my website and link to it on this blog. Or, if you can aptly describe it sans pictures, feel free to post it as a comment here. I'd also love to know the lengths for any helpful websites.

I have been growing my hair out as well. It is about halfway down my back now and sometimes annoying while trying to cook or clean! I use a lot of clips, (you can even make your own with hot glue and flowers)and recently started using the elastic headbands. Sometimes I braid it as well. I haven't tried scarves yet but I have seen a few women who have put them in with an up do and it looks pretty.
A french braid works great - and the plus side is that you can tuck the braid part in if need be.
A lose bun works good too -- pull hair back into a pony tail, and then twirl it so that it is wrapped around itself, and when it gets tight enough wrap it around the ponytail and secure with a good scrunchie (fabric covered pony tail holder).
I have long hair but with teh baby pulling on it I either wear it in a french twist or use side combs.

My favorites for looks that stay put all day and can work for a shorter length of hair are french pig tails and the pin curl bun. French pig tails are a good bet for a shorter length hair rather than the basic french braid because it takes less hair to go only as far as the center of your head. French pig tails also stay in your hair better, and the next day you can have a beautiful head of curls with no effort at all. For people who don't know how to do a french braid, a pin curl bun is really very easy. All you do is to first put your hair into (yep, you guessed it!) a ponytail and then get out your bobby pins. Twist small sections of hair into little loops and arrange them around the base of the ponytail, making sure the bobby pins don't show. One bobby pin should hold each little "curl". When you finish, you'll have a bun that looks like curls (even if you don't have curly hair). Like the french pig tails, you'll also have curls when you take your hair down. Both looks are versatile and will take you from a sink full of dishes to out and about.

My hair is down to my waist and so is my daughters. We do a lot of "Little House On The Prairie" pigtail braids, like Laura. I change it up by parting my hair down the middle, on the side, or a zigzag part. My husband loves my hair like this too. When I am in a hurry I through it up in a bun with a scrunchy, and I love bandana scarves!
I'm big on the regency, Elizabeth Bennett look. (And having just cut my hair to what was supposed to be shoulderlength, this has kept me cool in the Midwestern heatwave! I have very curly hair, btw...)
To start, you can use long ribbons, long scarves, or even hemmed pieces of cloth (as long as its about 2 feet in length and about 3 inches or so wide, you should be okay!)
I put my hair in a ponytail, kind of high on my head...I usually leave a few tendrils down, mainly because they're shorter and going to escape at some point anyway), then I take the cloth/scarf, put the middle part on the top of my head and let it drape down. Then I pull it on both sides to wrap my head, cross them in back, and wrap (keeping it smooth!) it around my head until its all wrapped up. Then I just take the ends and tuck them in.
That's it, its really simple, and I'm very bad at my hair.
If you have straight hair, you can always curl it too. Or, take your hair in the ponytail and make a messy bun out of it. I've worn this hairdo for years, regardless of my hair length, and it always looks pretty, whether you are dressed up or in a t shirt and jeans! :)
I like hair sticks. I wrote about my first experience with them here, and I linked to a website where they sell them. http://laughter4daystocome.blogspot.com/2006/06/real-stickler.html
Also, when I was growing my hair out I used a hair piece over a bun. It looks like a really complicated do, but it's just fake hair on a rubber band that you wrap around a bun. I got lots of compliments on it.
Anyone remember this post from LAF a few years back?
Help! What Do I Do With My Hair?
I have refeerenced it many times-it is great for hair ideas! It has lots of pictures and instructions. I always especially liked the ones that Jennie Chancey modeled, as they worked even for that phase of growing out bangs.
I like using something called an octopus clip. It's not big and bulky like most of those plastic clips out there. It sits close to your head and the inside ends lie flat on your head rather than poking into it. You can twist your hair up like for a French twist and then put the clip on it and it holds it securely the whole day. Or if you have thin hair like me, you can twist it into a bun and put the clip over the whole thing. Nice and neat. My clip was made by Vidal Sassoon. If you Google Vidal Sassoon + octopus clip, you should be able to find a picture of it.
Katherine Hepburn did her hair in an old movie on screen. She pulled two strands back from over her ears and clipped them to the side of her head. Add some twisting for variety. You can use a clip or combs or barettes, but I like the little claw clips because they're gentler on hair and stay put. Then make sure you have some extra hair from below/behind your ears clipped to the middle of your head just below the crown. Pull up the rest of the hair and either clip/bobby pin to the hair above the center clip (at the crown) or twist around into a little bun or two before fastening. It's a quick, easy way to do it. If you need to see it done, the movie was A Philadelphia Story.

Ohh! I discovered the coolest hairstyle just this morning...
You take the top half, or even more than the top half of hair and put it in a very loose ponytail. THen turn your head upside down and braid the lower hair in a regular braid moving upwards. Then, while holding the end of the braid, part the pontailed hair down the middle and passe the braid upwards (toward your forehead) through the little hole created by the part (going between the ponytail holder and your head).
Then (almost done) go back right-side up. Let the blood rush back out of your face. =D
Then take the original little almost-ponytail and flip it through its own hole in te same direction - towards your forehead - and then use your fingers to let the braid out.
What you end up with is two twists leading down to a tuck and beautifully unique ponytail!
I did this on my hair this morning even though my hair is barely shoulder-length. I think it would work on longer styles too!
Wow, these answers are great! I am looking forward to trying them out. My hair is shoulder length, but still has the layers, so I am waiting to grow them out. Thanks for all the answers!
And a big thank you, Crystal, for posting this question for me!
From Friends:
My friend Rebekah and I went onto the site you recommended. The hairstyles were soooo neat! I am a lover of "old fashion" things so this sight was right up my alley! Thank you so much for revealing this little hidden treasure. I can't wait to try them out! Although, it might be awhile, because currently my hair is only a little over shoulder length. It was down to my waist but I got it cut for "Lock of Love". I am a little sorry not to have long hair, but, it does grow back. Thank you again! This has really been a highlight of our "girls night"! I can't wait to try them on Rebekah! She has long hair by the way. In, fact, she is styling my hair just now as I'm typing. How silly girls can be when they get excited!
