The joys of modern technology

There is a point when modern technology for the sake of efficiency just starts getting creepy:

ROME, Ga. - The never-ending march of technology now means school children here can pay for their cafeteria sloppy joes with their fingers.

Rome City Schools is switching to a scanning system that lets students use their fingerprints to access their accounts. In the past, students had to punch in their pin numbers.

"The finger's better because all you've got to do is put your finger in, and you don't have to do the number and get mixed up," said Adrianna Harris, a second grader at Anna K. Davie Elementary School.

The new system speeds lunch lines, said city administrators. It's being phased in to Rome High School, Rome Middle School and all the city's elementary schools. The city hopes to have the system in use next month system-wide.

Some parents are uneasy with having their children's fingerprints scanned, and wonder about how well the information is secured.

"It may be perfectly secure, but my daughter is a minor and I understand that supposedly the kids have the option to not have their prints scanned, but that's not being articulated to my daughter," said Hal Storey, who's daughter is a 10th grader at Rome High.

Blog reader, Shannon, sent this to me and commented:
This story was quite alarming to me! What's next, microchipping them before taking them on field trips? I don't have kids, but this article should serve as yet another reason for people to homeschool their kids and share lunch with them everyday, no fingerprints required!

This is my area of Georgia and I had the same reaction when I saw it in the paper. It's quite alarming - especially how "everyone" seems to be so happy about it.

I don't have a problem with the finger print thing.

When I worked at the hospital we used our finger prints to get into the medication cart.

I guess I don't think the government is out to get me.

Zan,
I don't suspect that the government is "out to get me." However, there is such thing as too much of a good thing. Anyone who reads the scriptures will find prophecy regarding having "the mark." and while the fingerprint may not be enforced everywhere, they have tested microchips on people, and even have a chip called the Angel Chip that parents can have implanted into their childs arm. Fingerprinting not a big deal? Every big thing begins with something small.

Shannon,

I believe the "mark" in scriptures is spiritual and is significant to the Church, not the secular world. Don't want to get in an eschatology debate. If you believe the "mark" is a literal physical sign, than I can totally understand your concern. I would be concerned if I interpreted it that way too. So, if you are concerned you should use cash. When credit/debit cards, as well as S.S. numbers, came out a lot of Christians were concerned about them too.

I think the Angelchip is for keeping track of small children. Right?

Zan, yes, I don't want to make this an eschatological debate. In my view, those can be extremely unproductive. I know, I might be weird to think that, but that's just how I feel.

I just found this article interesting and so posted it. I do think there are many in government who want to move in the direction of taking technology and government too far.

So basically Zan is saying that because the mark is no big deal to the secular world, it should not get christians hot and bothered over the issue. Sorry, but christians are to be not of this world, so why endorse what the world is doing. It appears that some worshippers do, as evident by the comments made on this blog.

Oh yes! That is exactly what it is because why put forth the effort of supervising your child and keeping them safe, when you can get them chipped and breathe a sigh of relief knowing that they are safe under Big Brother's eyes. I mean really, they track animals and vehicles with them, why not people?

Shannon: I think Zan is saying that she doesn't believe there is a mark for unbelievers - only believers. I could be completely wrong, so Zan, correct me if I am. I think that is why she is saying this doesn't bother her.

I've known Zan for quite some time (well, almost as long as I've been blogging!) and I know that she is truly seeking to do what is right in the eyes of God. She is not seeking to conform to the world and though we may differ on some minor areas, I respect her beliefs because I know that she doesn't take what she believes lightly.

I know you mean well, Shannon, and I know this issue is important to you, but I just didn't want Zan to get run over for what she believes either. :)

Crystal, You are not weird for not wanting to discuss eschatology. I know I shouldn't have said anything about my viewpoint on the fingerprint issue. I'm very sorry because it has caused some misunderstanding.

Shannon,

The "mark" that is mentioned in Revelations, I believe, is not a physical mark that will be visible on the forehead. I, believe it is a spiritual mark. There are MANY different views held by Christians on the end times or eschatology. I would encourage you to study them, but not discuss them on this blog since Crystal has requested that we don't. Actually, recently, I am starting to think that the mark mentioned in Rev. 13: 16-17, applies to the Christians in Rome during the time of Nero, but am undecided. Yes, the Bible does speak of Christians having the mark of God on them, but I can't find the passage right now. We don't have a physical mark on our foreheads so it makes sense to me that the mark of the beast is not a physical mark.

I am of the amillenial view of the end times. I will say that I am NO theologian and am quite dusty on end times theology. I think a lot of Christians interpret Revelations and Daniel too literally. Anyway, I am way too busy to debate this with anyone and Crystal doesn't want this to be turned into a debate. From experience, eschatology debating just gets people mad and frustrated. Like I said before, Shannon, do your own research on it or maybe there is another blog that would be happy to discuss this with you. I remember last year, some time, C. S. Hayden wrote about it (look at Crystal's "Great Blogs" for his blog and search his archives.

About the Angelchip. I am mixed on that. Yes, I DO supervise my children quite extensively. I would probably kill myself if I lost one of my children and I could've had a tracking device in them (ooh, tracking device. Sounds very Trekkie). Right now, I live in a pretty crime free area and am not wealthy (have a feeling these devices would cost a bit)so I will just use the old fashioned ways of watching my children, ie. fences, telling them to stay in my vision, get a dog, get a gun (j/k), tie them up (j/k again). OK, it is late and I am getting silly, so I better go to bed. : )

Have a great weekend!
