Saturday sewing show-and-tell

Finally, after many requests, I'm posting my latest "sewing" projects - I think "crafting" projects might be a better terminology, but then I wouldn't be able to do any alliteration. So "sewing" it is. If all goes as planned, I'm hoping to be able to have a new sewing post every Saturday. This will serve as a great motivation for my usual procrastinating self, and hopefully many of you will enjoy it as well.

I'm almost embarrassed to share these since I'm such a beginning knitter. But since so many of you asked, here goes...

Here is the first knitting project I finished this week - my first real knitting project to do (so I'm pretty excited to have actually made something, even something simple like this!):

(Click to see a closeup.) Nothing snazzy, just a simple purse done with a simple basic knit stitch. It was my first time to sew my knitting work together, though, and I was really happy with how it turned out.

Here is what I am currently working on:

(Click to see a closeup.) This is a simple doll blanket for Kathrynne. I used a dishcloth pattern and expanded and revised it some. My goals in doing this project were to learn how to re-do an easy pattern and to work a larger piece of knitting (this is the biggest one piece knitting project I've done thus far) with a little pattern on it. I'm over half-way done with this and hope to have it finished by next week. For those of you more experienced than me, I wish that I could make the edges more straight and neat. Any pointers on how to do so? The one side especially is rather crooked.

Thanks to those of you who recommended Debbie Bliss' books. I picked up a copy of her Knitting Workbook at the library this week and have been enjoying perusing it. It looks like it will be years before I'll be able to tackle some of those things (the intricate designs, embroidery on knitting, beadwork in with your knitting, etc.) but it was very inspirational and fun to look through! The sky definitely seems the limit when it comes to the knitting possibilities!

Lastly, here is a small cross-stitch project I'm working on:

A cross-stitched teapot wall-hanging. As most of you know, I love tea things - tea cups, tea pots, and tea itself. So when I saw this little cross-stitch pattern on half price, I had to grab it up.

I have one more sewing project I've been working on this week and making good headway on it, but I can't post pictures or tell you about it because it is a gift for a reader of this blog. :)

You're brave, doing cross-stitch... I would never want to take the time! :P I like projects that can be done in one day :D haha!

BTW, we still have that cross-stitched "Missouri" dish towel you made for us as a wedding gift! :D

I *love* the teapot pattern. I recently found a quilt block pattern the makes little teacups and saucers and it's *so* cute, but I'm forcing myself to finish my other projects before starting anything new.

You knitting looks nice and even. I've only knitted a scarf but would love to knit more someday. My mother is a very experienced knitter so when I do pick it up again I'll have an amazing tutor.

For your ragged egdes, try slipping the first stitch of every row as if knitting into the back, and purling the last stitch of every row.

Purty knitting. :O) I'm working on a scarf right now, from a book called "One Skein" that I got from the library.

The purse is cute. Have you seen the felted purses? I want to make one in the near future.

For your edges, it will come better with more practice. What's happening is some stitches are loose, and some are tight. Try to do the last few stitches of each row a little tighter than the other stitches. Not super tight so you can't get the needle through, but just a little tighter than the other stitches.

The cross stitch reminds me of my cross stitch project I have sitting in my sewing room.

So much to do, so little time to do it in! :) BTW, I write about knitting frequently on my blog, and you can look at my past projects by scrolling down and looking at the links under the "Projects" button.
