WFMW: Simple toy storage solution

As many of you know, we live in a small home and I disdain clutter. Since Kathrynne was born, we've slowly been accumulating a small stash of toys for her - something which is almost impossible to avoid when you have multiple doting grandparents and aunts and uncles. I don't mind a few good quality toys, but I've tried very hard to avoid "toy overload."

We started out with a small toy basket and whatever could fit into that basket, Kathrynne could have. As Kathrynne has grown, though, so have her toys. We quickly outgrew the basket and I spent a few months trying to come up with another solution. Everything I tried seemed to require more work than it was worth. They toys would quickly be strewn all over the place and never put back into their proper place.

Then one day a few months ago, my husband came home with a new addition for our living room...

This little end table/cabinet has been the perfect solution for us. All of Kathrynne's toys and books go underneath in the storage area. She can get them out anytime she wants to play with them and then it is very easy to clean up and put them away. Plus, it provides a storage place for Jesse's books he's reading on top and a place for a reading lamp for him. And, once the toys are quickly picked up and put away, you'd never know that this is our toy cabinet!

We have another bin in storage of extra toys which won't fit in here. Every once in a while, I'll rotate things through so that there are new toys to play with. However, if it can't fit into this cabinet or the storage bin, we get rid of it. This keeps a lid on toy accumulation and keeps things manageable for everyone. Since we only have one small child and we live in a small home, this has been a great answer to our toy storage problem. It might not work for those with more children, but it works for us!

I'd love to hear what you do in your home for toy storage. For other great "Works-For-Me" tips, be sure to visit Rocks in My Dryer.

Great idea. I do a similar idea with the big rubbermaid storage bins.

Big rubbermaid storage bins are our toy storage. Also, twice a year around his birthday, and right before Christmas we go thru his(my son's) toys together, and if he doesn't want them anymore we give them to Goodwill for other kids to enjoy who don't have that many toys.

I also use the rubbermaid bins, only the medium sized ones and he can only have one out at a time. I keep the rest in the basement and we rotate. I have a super yard and all his toys and baby gear are kept in it.
In the nursery I have a dust ruffle on the crib and keep the pack n play and out grown clothes stored under there, it helps to keep the closet from looking cluttered.
