Input requested: Birthday present ideas

I'm looking for a birthday present for my mom. She's very hard to shop for because she doesn't like expensive presents such as perfume, clothes, makeup, etc. She told me she wanted stationery, but I think she'd also be pleased by other inexpensive, creative ideas. Do any of your readers have any stationery or other gift ideas? I've already tried to find stationery, and it's getting harder to locate because of email. Thanks! -Amy
One place which carries beautiful stationery is Roses and Teacups. They have some gorgeous feminine writing materials, cards, and letterhead. Most definitely check them out.

I also would suggest, if you are somewhat creative, that you might consider making some cards and stationery for your mom yourself. Maybe with rubber stamps and embossing, or dried flowers, or even on the computer you could design some nice and pretty letterhead. The possibilities are endless.

Those are just two things I thought of off of the top of my head. Anyone else want to pipe in with ideas for Amy?

You could make her a scrapbook. That's what I did for my mother this past Mother's Day (her birthday hasn't happened yet--grins!).

I scanned and printed out a bunch of old photos of my sister and I as children, as well as several of our children. I placed them in a lovely 7x7 lavendar scrapbook album. I was careful to include plenty of journaling about all the things she taught us over the years, and how we're carrying those things on in our children's lives.

My mom was truly touched by the gift, and had to leave the room to dry her eyes.

I think something like that would be very fitting.

Good luck!

Stamps? How about more practical things like a gas card for the station she usually frequents? Gift card for groceries? Netflix subscription? Professional lawn care/snow shoveling for 6 months?

HTH!

Hallmark and WalMart have some beautiful stationary. Why not make her us a stationary basket!
You could include the following:

Stationary
Notecards
Stamps
A pretty pen
a small box of chocolates
a small bag of potporri
her favorite tea

I save my wrapping paper scraps, shred them, and place in the bottom of giftbags and baskets instead of tissue paper. Tie a pretty bow around the basket with a handmade card.

My mother is elderly and it is hard for her to get out much. She was constantly having to go to the store to get birthday cards for her many children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also always running out of stamps and wishing she had a get well card or sympathy card for someone she knew or heard about. So for Christmas this year I thought I'd get her a box or basket and put in it a roll of stamps, an assortment of birthday cards, sympathy cards and get well cards, etc. I planned to go to the dollar store and pick out the 2/$100 ones for sons, daughters, grandchildren, etc. The cards are Dollar General are very nice for .50. Some return address labels would complete the kit. Thanks, Debbie J. (NC)

I would get her a very nice quality stationary that suits her personality.

If she likes old, elegant things, try VictorianTradingCo.com. If she's contemporary, seek something with smooth lines. Other places offer monogrammed stationary. Although I don't have a monogram, I have a signiture stationary that I've used for over 15 years now.

If you want to make stationary, you might try something like: http://www.marthastewart.com/page.jhtml?type=content&id=channel3310069&contentGroup=MSL&site=living&rsc=ns2006_m1

Victorian Trading Co. has beautiful stationary, calling cards, address labels, etc...
They also have many beautiful gift items. Try them on the web.
You could have your daughter "color" a border on paper and take it to an office supply place and have copies made to turn it into stationary. Put together a little correspondence basket for her with a pretty pen, stationary, envelopes, labels, a little candle, a book of scripture, poety, or quotations, a teacup, etc...

How about including a book, used and like new, on letter writing such as: The Pleasure of Staying in Touch: Writing Memorable Letters by Victoria Publishing, Author Jennifer Williams. There is one on ebay to let you see this idea: 4620970560

A dollar-type store or Big Lots might have very pretty yet inexpensive stationery that could be made personalized by rubber stamping and tied with a pretty bow. Maybe include a new address book or pretty stickers for use as envelope seals?

Maybe an idea, such as historic letters, might come to mind from this site: http://www.wendy.com/letterwriting/biblio.html Does your mom like to read letters? I Love You, Ronnie: The Letters of Ronald Reagan to Nancy Reagan was an insightful book. Maybe a trip to the library for interesting borrowed rather than purchased books to be included in a basket with stationery and tea and whatever may come to mind your mother would enjoy? The librarian might help you find a book on gift ideas or on crafting stationery?
