Pathetic

We are most surely an entertainment-overloaded, selfish society:
HARTFORD, Conn. - Two armed thugs tried to rob a line of people waiting for the new Playstation 3 game system to go on sale early Friday and shot a man who
refused to give up his money, authorities said. In other states, customers pushed and shoved their way to the shelves to get at the limited supply, and in Kentucky, four people were grazed by BBs fired from a passing vehicle as they waited for a Best Buy store to open.
All for something to play video games on? I'm sorry, but that's pathetic in my opinion. Do people not have anything better to do these days?

The news showed people who camped outside the stores for 2 days-just to buy the games.I find that unbelievable also.

The 80's was the Cabbage Patch dolls,90's was Tickle Me Elmo and now the video games.

I agree! My "little" brother works at Best Buy, actually - I'll have to ask him how his day went! I know they were preparing for it to be really crazy, both today and next Friday.

Move to Detroit. We had a guy kill his neighbor over the last piece of chicken. It's not about video games, it's the selfish nature of man.

I completely agree with you, Crystal! I heard some similar stories on the news this morning, and was amazed at what people went through in order to get the newest, coolest device to play video games on. I heard that some stores had security guards escort shoppers to their cars so that the customer would not be robbed in the parking lot. It is really pathetic.

Not only pathetic, that is just plain scary! I don't know how our perception of the Christmas season became so distorted. It has become such a selfish holiday, and it should be just the opposite.

I totally agree too! Pathetic and ridiculous. We were at Target last night to pick up a few things, and there were people in lawn chairs outside, already lining up for the next morning...in the freezing windy rain to boot. I was amazed at that, but pushing and shoving and robbing people over a stupid video game thing that will outdated in a year anyway...it's disgusting.

...there but for the grace of God go "us" so we should pray concerning those that miss Christmas. We spent one Christmas with no money for gifts(we were helped with daily needs of food, etc. because of employment redirecting) and sat through a Christmas Eve program with the focus on those with presents sharing with those that didn't have any(better to give than receive theme). Believe me, that Christmas was the best we had as Jesus REALLY was the gift and we REALLY were focused on giving Him worship with stuff totally out of the picture.

I went in to Best Buy 2 nights ago (wednesday). There were these people sitting outside of it. I had no idea as to what they were doing. I stepped inside and asked one of the police officers there what was going on? He told me about them waiting for this play system coming out today and they were in line. We were having cold weather (well for here). And they were waiting in line for that. Plus the price I could get a whole computer for the price they are selling those for and no games for that price. I complained years ago when we purchased a Nintendo for our son about 18-19 years ago and I think we paid 50-75 for that.

It is a pathetic state that our nation is in. People need to rethink their priorities.

While I certainly don't condone selfishness or the love of money, do any of you know how much the resale value is right now on the video game console that just came out??!!

Joshua considered waiting in line (or even pre-ordering) but didn't... if we had gotten one (yes, they are expensive!) it could be resold right now for 10 or more times what we paid.

I would never shoot someone over it, but I'd definitely consider waiting in line all day and night to make several thousand dollars re-selling something. Maybe my priorities are "all wrong", but that's smart money in my opinion.

This is truly sad. But, this isn't about Christmas...this would happen around the holidays or not. It about people being hateful and selfish. This year is lean for us, and I am determined to let my children see what Christmas is truly about, not worry how much we can get or how big our tree is.

My husband and I went to best buy on Wed evening to pick up a musical we'd been wanting to watch. There were tents lined all up and down the side walk, with people who were camping out waiting to get these items. Do people take vacation time off of work for this?

My husband knows a guy who works at Sam's Club and when
Lee talked to him on Thursday he said they had several people camping out at least a day before the Playstation thing was to be released...he told my husband that when the time came they were only going to have two to sell anyway, most of those people were going to have to be turned away empty handed. I don't understand how the managers of these stores can walk by all of those people knowing they are just wasting their time and not saying anything. The whole thing is ridiculous and as far as I'm concerned shame on the company as well...this is actually what they were hoping for to an extent!

How dumb! Just think...people line up for a material item that will probably be thrown aside in 3 weeks, but you can't get these people to come to the house of God and will give a myriad of excuses why. Wouldn't it be great of these people were just as anxious and zealous about Jesus Christ instead of over a game? Man, this world would be in a revival!!!!
But it's going to be like this too after Thanksgiving.

My husband and our adult sons wanted to get some game systems to re-sell for a profit, but reconsidered during the pre-order phase. Making a profit on even one system seemed hypocritical. We would just be promoting the item. I would rather make do than make a profit from all the hysteria.

Hi Crystal!
I was going to email this craziness for you to post on the blog, but you beat me to it! I read that a pregnant-near delivery, woman waited in line joking about giving birth there. I was blown away! Personally, the last thing I would want to do at 9 months of pregnancy is STAND in a line. I would rather ly on the couch and eat pickle ice cream or something :)

On our local news this week, it's shown 2 different stores where people have lined up in order to buy the new games coming out.

Most of the people interviewed said that they were buying them in order to sell them for a huge profit.

The one they had on tonight showed just one kid [teenager?] who was lined up and waiting.

I'm praying that since he was on TV and is by himself there, that he will be safe from anyone who might come and try to take his money from him [obviously he has enough to buy the game, etc.]

Love,

Jennelle

Most of the people standing in line to buy the Playstation 3s are people who are going to resell them. As mentioned above, you can make quite the profit. I think the people getting violent are definately in it for the money.

An interesting business note. Sony loses about $300 profit with each PS. I was confused about this. They make all the money on the games they sell. When you buy a PS3, no games go with it.

I haven't played a video game since Super Mario Bros. 1. LOL! Dating myself, a bit. Video games give me a headache.

The latest Nintendo came out today and that includes video games, too. There were lines, but no to the extent of PS3. Haven't heard of any violence, either.
