Weirdness

Sometimes, being pregnant just makes you weird. I don't know another term for it.

Since I found out I was pregnant, I've tried very hard to make myself eat every few hours. This was the biggest mistake I made last time around and I didn't want to suffer the consequences of being so weak and sick again. So, every few hours when the horrible "empty stomach sickness" started hitting, I've dutifully tried to scratch my brain and come up with something I thought I could down which had some nutrition, too, if possible.

The longer this has gone on, the harder it's become. The last few days, nothing has sounded even halfway appetizing (to put it mildly); I'd be sick before I ate it, when I ate it, and after I ate. Yet, I still painstakingly forced myself to eat because not eating would have even greater repercussions.

Nothing sounded good all this week until yesterday, that is. My husband emailed me from work mid-afternoon and asked me if I could make something for an upcoming Thanksgiving celebration we were supposed to be attending in a few days, if I felt up to it (everything in our lives is contingent upon that right now!). Instead of just asking if I could bring something, he made the mistake of suggesting I could make this green vegetable salad which usually gets rave reviews.

That did it. All I could think about was the green salad... A-L-L afternoon. I felt like I could give anything to have some of that green salad. In fact, I could eat a whole big bowlful of it.

When Jesse walked in the door, that's practically all I could talk about the entire evening. Finally, he offered to go to the store and buy the ingredients and make it for me. Now I really got excited. I pulled out the recipe to start writing down what he needed to buy and much to my horror read, "Must sit overnight. This salad will NOT taste good when it is first made."

I was crushed. Doesn't the recipe creator know that pregnant women can't wait overnight for green salad? I need it now. Right now. Besides, in the morning, it will probably make me sick.

Needless to say, I somehow survived without the green salad. Somehow. We pregnant women always do, even though at the time it seems almost like a life or death matter.

By the way, I didn't tell you what is in this much-coveted green salad, did I? Among other things, asparagus, green peppers, cucumbers, and artichokes. Need I say more? And did I tell you that up until yesterday afternoon, the thought of any green vegetable was utterly appalling to me?

The verdict is in: I'm just weird.

When I was pregnant with my first, one day I craved Cracker Barrel all day long. When hubby finally arrived home, I begged him to take me. We went, had to wait about 20 mins for a table. By the time we got to the table, I no longer wanted cracker barrel at all. All I wanted was orange slices. Our waitress was kind enough to arrange that for me.

So I guess, pregnancy does make one weird!!! :)

Lindsey, I laughed so hard reading what you wrote and had to read it to my husband so he knew I really and truly was not hte only one who did all this bizarre stuff when pregnant. I can SO relate. It's crazy!

Oh, Crystal! This is exactly how I've been through my whole first trimester. Thankfully, the having to eat something, anything, every few hours has passed, but sadly, the weirdness stays. I think it's just the hormone affecting our brains! :)
I actually had major crazings for green veggies this pregnancy...very weird! Last time it was Coca Cola and chocolate in any form!
I do hope things will settle down in your body before too long!

I totally understand this. Remember in Rapunzel how the sight of the fresh lettuce in the witch's garden is too much for the pregnant wife, who makes her husband go get it for her, and subsequently promises the witch Rapunzel? I totally get that, too - the whole fresh green compulsion is pretty common, I imagine.

Hi, if the thought of it doesn't make you feel yucky now, would you post the recipe for your green salad? Sounds interesting.

Oh, you are not the only one! My mom would tell me "Martha, I am craving homemade macaroni and cheese!" I would go to start making it for her and then she said, "You know I really want (another main dish)." And I am not kidding you...a few minutes later she would come up with yet another one!!! I remember several times making three different things and by the time they were made...all of them were bad!!! Hey, it was good training for me!

Me, I could not think about the food for a long time or else I could not eat it. So, I avoided food, which is not the healthiest, but I tried to have food on hand that is easy to just grab and eat. One pregnancy I did manage to eat sandwiches although they still make feel ill when I think of them.

Gracie,

I think the vegetable Rapunzel's mother craved was radishes or rapuns (sp?).

Cystal,

I had the same craving for a green salad. I was working a second shift and was so hungry. At break, I went down to the cafeteria and made myself a wonderful salad. I shouldn't known that it would be to hard on my stomach, but oh, it looked so good! AFter I ate it I started feeling quesy. By the time I got home a made a dash to the bathroom. I never had a craving for salad again after that during my pregnancy.

I used to send my hsuband out for KFC. I had such a craving for it. By the time he would come back I could hardly eat a bite.

Women who are pregnant define the word, "weird."

It's not just those who are pregnant. :-D If I haven't eaten in a long time, I start craving the weirdest things - turkey slices and gravy, mashed potatoes, orange julius, raspberries...none of which sound good in the slightest way at the moment.

Andrea: Thanks for asking - actually no. He has a job until the new term starts in January and then we aren't sure where we'll be. Gratefully at least we had 8 weeks after the election to find something. We're looking into all sorts of possibilities right now and praying for clear direction from the Lord.

I'm not sure whether to pack or wait or what and we're not sure whether we'll be moving hours away or minutes away. Everything is very up in the air right now. I've been so sick, though, that I've only been able to take things about an hour at a time, so it has been a blessing since I've not had time or energy to worry about the future! And, even though we don't know where we're going, we're both really at peace.

Thanks to everyone who has been praying for us and sending us words of encouragement. You all are such a blessing! I'll be sure to fill you all in on more details when I know them myself!

With my second I discovered the miracle of proteins for pregnancy sickness. With my first I would eat cracker after cracker and still feel sick. With my second I craved refried beans and peanut butter (not together : ) ). I thought, "You are nuts lady. About to throw up and you want to devour a can of beans." I finally succumbed and ate some. I never felt so good! From there on out I felt a ton better. I have had 2 midwives tell me carbs are the worst, to stick with protein. With my 3rd I stuck with protein every few hours and had the best pregnancy tummy yet. Hope this helps some of you!

All I know is that this has already been a very long 7 weeks for me. I am sick and tired and sick and tired of being sick and tired. LOL. ALthough, I am grateful for the blessing it is hard when there is so much to do and having 2 kids. My hubby has been great. But guilt consumes me. I know this is a season and I am just wading through.

Cravings so far this pregnancy (I'm in my 3rd trimester):

chicken ceasar salad from McAllister's
chinese food
corn dogs
chocolate
Sunkist orange soda
Steak w/ baked potato and salad
Fish/seafood
Oranges/orange juice

I've still got three months to go, so there's no telling what I'll want next, but Thanksgiving dinner is sounding more and more awesome by the minute...I might make a pan of dressing and gravy just for myself.

Anonymous: Protein definitely helps - though that term "helps" is somewhat relative in my case. I've stayed away from basically all sugars (including almost all fruit) this time, and eaten very few carbs aside from some wholegrains. Gratefully, I've not been craving anything sweet at all, which I'm glad for. I found this helped (staying away from carbs and sugar and trying to focus on protein) much last time around so that's what I'm doing this time around.

And the best thing is just keeping a merry heart, despite how you feel - always looking for something to smile about or laugh about and trying to focus on counting my blessings. :)

I have heard that peanutbutter is bad to eat when you are pregnant. Some Drs attribute the increase in peanut allergies to peanutbutter consumed by momma.

My sister had a peanutbutter sandwich almost every day while she was pregnant with her third and he has horrible allergies to eggs and peanuts.

Anyone else heard of this?

This is a huge bummer for me because I love peanutbutter. Breastfeeding moms aren't supposed to eat a lot either.

Staying happy and cheerful is a great way to fight morning sickness. That is probably the best medicine I used.

I smiled as I read your post.
With my first, I craved nacho cheese "Doritos".
With my second, for the first few weeks, all I could "stomach" was root beer flavored popsicles. Talk about wierd.
I hope that you feel better soon.

I'm not 100% convinced of the peanut/peanut butter connection and allergies because of mom's eating habits while pregnant. With our oldest, the pediatrician came into the hospital room after the newborn exam and asked if I'd eaten chocolate or peanuts as baby dumpling had severe eczema. Had I? Miss healthy pregnant mommy ate fresh fruits and veggies, etc. up until month 9 of the pregnancy when she somewhat began gorping out on Reese's peanut butter cups(of which there was a value pack in the bedside table drawer).

He's fine with peanuts and chocolate. I did have imbalanced flora issues that were passed to him(first month of nursing was a pip with his digestive belches, colic, and bm issues that landed him in the hospital and back home to remain on formula. They had me eating melba toast and drinking water to try to figure out what foods were the culprit with him. Baby 2 had me with balanced flora and him with no allergy issues even though I did eat peanuts/chocolate and his being able to be nursed till 2-1/2 without any issues); he was finally treated for the root of the imbalance when in 4th grade(up till then, it created havoc with sensitivites to just about everything airborne and ingested and sometimes touched. After treatment, it was as if someone simply switched those issues off totally. Allergies went "poof" in one month and he wasn't privy to even the sniffles for years when around other children that were ill! Before it was allergies and antibiotics to prevent and treat infections, me giving him allergy shots with mercury preservative MAJOR OUCHIES that did nothing for the allergies, and chronic sinus, ear, throat and respiratory issues.).

That's so incredibly sweet of your DH to offer to get and make it.

When pregnant with my first, I had a craving for a turkey! So we roasted it in the middle of July.
