The value of maternal love

I found this quote yesterday written down in a dilapidated notebook which was buried at the bottom of the desk drawer:

"Though it has become politically correct to suggest that young children are infinitely resilient, the data does not support this. The fact remains that babies thrive when they have sensitive, responsive, and consistent mothering. And they fail to develop their full potential when they are deprived of maternal love. They need their mothers during their earliest years more than they need toys, socializing with other children, or the material comforts a second income will buy."

I like that! Especially the part about toys (at this time of year)! I'm going to save that one in my notebook!
Prayers and good wishes to you during your move!

I've read that book and I really appreciated the research. I'm glad the move is finished and that it went well!

I love that book! It really helped me to be thankful for a mom that stayed home with us and made me determined to stay home with mine in spite of odds against it!

I have watched my younger brothers and sisters spend their "baby years" in a daycare, and it really does affect them in a negative way. Babies who are around their mothers DO seem much more content--even later in life. Excellent quote! I'll tuck it in my "save for later" file!

I wonder if some people have made the realization that their kids spend more time with a paid caregiver than w/their mom. No one will love your kids more than you! I'm sure if you asked kids in full-time day care if they'd rather be w/Mom, they'd say yes.

I always enjoy when people say things which are somehow contrary to popular opinion in spite of being blatantly obvious.

Perhaps that is why my daughter's interest is far more in playing with mommy and daddy first, assorted household objects second, and anything that is actually designed to be a toy for children somewhere down past pretty much everything else near the bottom of the list.
