Frugal Friday: Cheap cheese
If you have a Kroger store in your area, you need to run over there sometime in the next few days and take advantage of a great sale they have going on. They are having a sale on selected brands/items (mostly Kraft and also Nabisco and a few others) where you buy 8 items (you can mix and match) and get $7 back instantly.
Here are a few really good deals on this special:
Kraft 8 oz. cheese blocks and 2 cup shredded cheese bags are on sale for $1.77. Not the best deal ever, but when you buy 8, you get $7 back, making them under $1 each. Usually getting these for $0.99 is the cheapest I can ever get them. However, it gets better. In most stores, right by the cheese, they have a dispenser with coupons for buy 3 Kraft cheese, get $1 off. So, combine the Buy 8, Get $7 deal with 2 Buy 3, Get $1 off coupons and you can get these blocks and bags of cheese for about $0.64 each! Best of all, the shredded cheese freezes very well so if you can afford it, I'd do multiple transactions of this and stock your freezer with cheese for the next month or two.
Another great deal is on cream cheese - Philadelphia Cream Cheese is 10 for $10. Buy 8 for $8, get $7 back. That's 8 packs of cream cheese for $1. Or, $0.13/each. If you have coupons for these (which you can often find) you can get them all for free. Cream cheese can also be easily frozen and used in cheesecakes or baking, etc.
Check the store flier for other brands and products included in this special. Remember, you can only get the $7 off once per transaction. If you buy 16 items in one transaction, you won't get $14 off. So be sure to split up your transactions if you are buying more than 8 items on the special.
Catherine has a great post up on some of her grocery shopping savings of late. (By the way, thanks to her for the tip-off on the cream cheese deal. I'd been too excited about the cheese deal to even notice about the cream cheese!)
And of course, if you are looking for more help in the grocery savings department, be sure to check out my just-finally-completed ebook on the subject. Can anyone tell I'm thrilled to have it done and posted on my site "for real"?? It's been so long, it seems, since I've worked on anything like that and it feels good to check something off my list!

Oh, thanks for mentioning that! We do nothave Kroger, but we have Smiths and they had the sma deal.
We ran out of pasta last night. My 2 daughters looked up how to make it from scratch, it was pretty good!
Necessity is the mother of invention!
Crystal,
Thanks for posting this great tip! I have several cream cheese and regular cheese coupons! I've learned a lot of great couponing tips from you; my husband gets such a kick out of seeing how little I can pay for something. Can't wait to tell him about the cheese!
Take Care,
Trixie
I'll have to pick some up! We use a lot of cheese here!
Earlier this week I posted my receipt from Kroger with 43% savings. Part of it was the deal you mentioned. Mine was for bologna and frozen pizzas (something I don't often buy, but nice to have in a pinch!) Didn't realize it was on cheese too. I might have to make another trip.
Oh, how I miss Kroger... We haven't been near one in almost 8 years, but it won't be long now before we're living near one again. lol! I can't wait...
I was able to get cereal for less than $1 a box this week at a local store though, so I can't complain too much. ;-)
Crystal, I love all your money saving tips. I've been trying to do more drug store rebates and sales. I've definitely saved money on those. Do you have a specific schedule you use to work
on your coupons/sales each week? Or do you just find time here and there. I'm thinking, with my family size and responsibility, I'm
going to need to make a more formal time each week to work on these things so that I can be consistent.
Tracy
I love Frugal Fridays! Thank you for the great tips, Crystal!
Thank you so much for the tip! We eat a lot of cheese :). Hubby has already gone by the store and here is what he did, instead of just buying eight bars of cheese and using two coupons he bought nine bars of cheese so he would be able to use THREE COUPONS. He still got that ninth bar of cheese for the sale price so each bar ended up costing 56 cents before tax, saving an additional eight cents per bar (which is a lot when you get under a dollar to begin with!)! He is going to stop by Kroger a couple more times before he comes home from work and if they don't run out ;) we will end up with over $60 worth of cheese (18 bars of block cheese and 10 of cream cheese) for $11.95 AFTER tax. I hope all of that made sense...Now I am going to go read your "Secrets to Supermarket Saving" that I bought and downloaded last night, I'm getting really excited about this whole saving money thing ;)!
I wish we had a Kroger near here. I use a lot of cheese in cooking so the savings would be nice. Thanks for the Frugal Friday tips though. It's nice to learn new tips on saving money every day!
I have to thank you for this great tip. I normally shop at Kroger, but I somehow missed this special. I usually end up basing my meals on the manager's specials for items close to expiration and buying house brand items. This just goes to show that it pays to look at all the options.
I live in Houston, Tx and at my Kroger, you are allowed 3 $7 instant rebates per transaction. Also our cheese is on sale 3/$5 ($1.66 each).
I bought 10 packages of the eight ounce kraft cheese, 2 packages of the cream cheese, 2 bottles of salad dressing, and 2 boxes of Wheat Thins (this is something I would NEVER buy normally, but will enjoy).
Because I bought 10 of the cheese, I was able to use 3 of the dollar off coupons.
I ended up with a total of 16 items for $9.55, or about $0.60 per item.
My usual line in the sand on cheese buying is $3.00 per pound or less. This deal at Kroger gave me 5lbs. of cheese at around $0.97 per lb.
