Two of my favorite books
If you were to ask me who are the five authors who have had the greatest impact on my life, Amy Carmichael would be at the top of the list. My mom introduced me to her when I was very young and I will forever be grateful. For those who might be unfamiliar with her, Amy Carmichael was the oldest daughter of a Christian family from Ireland. She was impressed at an early age that "nothing is important but that which is eternal." This understanding proved to be a foundation for her service to the Lord among the mill workers of Ireland, the Japanese briefly, and then in India where she began her ministry to children in 1895 and where she remained until her death in 1951.
For years, I have been challenged, motivated, inspired, and convicted by her writings. Ever since we began Biblical Womanhood, I have been hoping we could carry some of the books she has authored. That desire finally became a reality this week after months of work and effort. (I've never put so much time and effort into getting accepted by a wholesaler! I guess the company who publishes her books rarely works with online businesses, so it was a much more complicated process. It was worth every bit of work though, and I know you will agree!)
We just got our shipment in of two of my favorite books of hers and I'm so excited to share these with you! You cannot help but be challenged through their pages to deepen your relationship with the Lord and your love for Him. They are especially perfect for moms or busy women who don't have a lot of time to sit and read. You can just pick them up and read for a moment sometime throughout the day when you need encouragement and come away with something to meditate on for the next few hours or more as you go about your daily life! I cannot recommend these two books highly enough.
If
This little book is compilation of short poems which cut to the heart of whether or not we truly love, like Christ loved. Based on 1 Corinthians 13, each small piece begins with "If..." and ends with "...Then I know nothing of Calvary Love." I often begin my morning with reading one or two of these little passages. Here are two examples which have most profoundly impacted me:
"If I covet any place on earth but the dust at the foot of the Cross, then I know nothing of Calvary Love." "If a sudden jar can cause me to speak an impatient, unloving word, then I know nothing of Calvary Love."*
(*There is a footnote on this one which often comes to my mind: "For a cup brimful of sweet water cannot spill even one drop of bitter water, however suddenly jolted.")

Edges of His Ways
My mom gave me a copy of this devotional book on my fifteenth birthday. I have read it almost daily since then and everyday I read, I am challenged. Compiled in 1955 from selections of Amy Carmichael's writings, this book contains short devotionals, poems, and much Scripture. It is always so fresh and relevant to my life, no matter how many years I've read it through! Click here to order.

I own Amy's book If and it is amazing! Christ had truly taught her about true love, and she has many gems to learn from. There is just so much we can learn from by our Savior's Ultimate Sacrifice. Blessings!
I love Amy Carmichael too! My favorite book is His Thoughts Said..His Father Said. I also love Eisabeth Elliot's biography of her life entitled, "A Chance To Die".
I have a few of Amy Carmichael's books and boy are they just so FULL!
I am so excited that you will be carrying her books---I think I'll definitely be buying some of them! (o:

I enjoyed the biography of her so much! I think the reason I enjoyed it so much was she was such a naughty child and I am sure her parents despaired of her many a time, but look how well she turned out!!! I have a child that I need to remind myself to just keep going, keep teaching him and I pray that someday it will all prove to have done something!!
I was just thinking today about what books have made the greatest impact on me (besides the Bible). I was reading "Great Expectations" but it has been so dull that I stopped. I read "What Katy Did" and "What Katy Did at School" instead. Although they are written for younger girls, they encourage me to be a Godly woman. It's amazing how a simple fiction book can be such an encouragement! It also led me to an epiphany about Biblical womanhood, which I'll be blogging about within the next few days.
I love Amy Carmichael too!
Crystal,
I love Elisabeth Elliot's biography of Amy Carmichael, who was such a woman of faith, so immersed in Scripture. But a question arose as I read: what do you think of Amy's decision to leave home and basically live without any male headship in India, even ruling over men in her ministry? Is being a missionary like that what God intends?
I've never read anything Amy wrote herself, except for excerpts in the biography. I look forward to ordering the books!

Great question, Lisa! I'm glad you asked. Just because we sell something does not mean we agree 100% with every little nuance of that author's life. We are very careful to only sell those items which we feel are the "best of the best," though.
Amy Carmichael's life and writings have had a profound impact on mine. No I don't agree with every little nuance of what she did, nor would I feel comfortable sending my daughter off alone and unprotected to a heathen country. However, that doesn't mean we can't still learn so much from her life. My desire is to learn from others but to never put them up on a pedastal so that I accept whatever they do or believe as truth and right. I want my beliefs and convictions to be based upon the Word of God not on what someone else does or says is okay.
Thank you for the response, Crystal!
To God be all glory,
Lisa of Longbourn
