Randomness: Dr.'s visit and iPhone craze

I told Jesse today that I think I ought to wait to write any posts on topics of any substantial matter until the fog in my brain clears. In the mean time, I'm sure I won't stop blogging (that seems to be impossible for me to do - it's just become a part of my life!), you just might hear about a lot of everyday things and random posts on lighter subjects. We'll see...

My doctor's visit went well today. I'll spare you the TMI details but suffice it to say that we're hoping the procedure fixed the issue. In other news, I've been given official permission by my midwife to be up and about now. I'm still going to be avoiding the stairs as much as possible and taking it easy, but I'm so grateful to be able to resume some normal activity.Am I the only one who thinks the Apple iPhone craze is quite insane? Or that spending $499-$599 just for the initial iPhone (not to mention all the monthly fees to add on top - which I'm positive are a pretty penny) is rather outrageous? Call me old-fashioned, but I'm perfectly happy with my simple cell phone.

Just for fun, I'd love to hear what you think of the iPhone craze.
Were you one of those camping out at the Apple store since Monday to get your iPhone tonight? Do you like all these expensive techno-gagdets and gizmos or do you prefer to keep it simple and inexpensive?

Personally, I think it's nuts. Not in our budget, and why would you want to spend money on a cell phone when you can get one for free each time you renew your contract?????
Glad to hear you are up and about now. Don't worry about the fuzzy thinking. Many of us are right there with you.

While I think it looks cool in the TV ads, I keep thinking that it has got to have a lot of gliches. I like to keep things simple anyway. Besides, if you can wait awhile, I'm sure the price will come down (not to mention the product will be outdated!). They've made a big deal in our local news because the Mayor of Philly waited all day in line to get one of these phones. Who cares! I'm sure the man works 24/7.

While the iPhone "craze" is happening, I'm reading the archives on No Impact Man's blog: http://noimpactman.typepad.com/

It's quite a contrast. And honestly, what kind of hoity-toity gimcrack is worth $600? I spent the better part of my evening watching my little guy figure out his 50-cent thrifted Fisher Price "stacking donuts" toy.

Glad you're able to move around more!

Personally, I think it's nuts, or shall I say the pursuit of material meaninglessness. People go more gaga over electronic devices than for God, or anything else of value it seems these days. Waiting in line for days? What a waste.

There is always going to be something newer or better. Next month it will be something else I am sure.

It's late and I'm fuzzy here, but in the end it's materialism and slavery to it as well. I personally have gotten rid of t.v. as of late, and I'm contemplating riddance of the internet too. It's nice to know I can detach if necessary. It is easy to cross over that "fine" line, isn't it?

I'm not even into basic cell phones, let alone the iphone. I think cell phones are great for emergencies but I think people need to be careful not to allow them to distract them from normal life. I see people talking on cells phones at the park while their kids play. What happened to playing with your kids? If there was no cell phone I bet there's a bigger change that they would be playing with their child or at least paying attention when their child calls out asking to be watched as they cross the monkey bars. There are just many situations where cell phones can get in the way, just as a computer can, if we're not careful. Perhaps, I am a rarity and old-fashioned. I'm more that happy not to hear the cell phone ring while I'm at the grocery store. I'm a homemaker, I'm never gone from home for more than a couple of hours. I can honestly say that there was only ONE TIME when I needed a cell phone when I got a flat tire BUT there was no reception within that 20 mile range anyway so it would have done me no good even if I did have a cell phone. Am I the only one who doesn't have a cell phone?

*sigh* I work in a mall right above the Apple store. Today was CRAZY!!!! People were screaming and clapping and it was LOUD. I'm with you; I told my co-workers I don't know why anyone would want to spend $500 on a phone, especially since I can upgrade in a few months to a new phone for all of $15, possibly free. Of course, I also have managed to live without an mp3 player or an iPod, so maybe I'm just old-fashioned. ;)

I think it's all pretty silly. But then, I'm the girl who doesn't even share her cell phone number because she doesn't want to be bothered while out. :-)

I just don't see a need to have a telephone, music, TV, internet, and whatever else they cram into those little devices on me at all times. I've come to the conclusion that people just don't know how to be alone with themselves anymore. Truly, there's something wrong with a society that must be entertained every second of the day.

I'm glad you're now able to be up and about. I didn't get a chance to tell you before now, but congratulations on the birth of your new baby!

I really don't understand all those high tech gadgets. I can't even forward a voice mail to someone else. Why on earth do you need a phone to take pictures, videos and be your personal stereo. Now they can even get television programs. Do they actually make phone calls?

The iPhone craze. I have a Blackberry, complete with internet and email capabilities and I do admit that I really love being connected to my email in this way. However, I believe that there is a danger with all of this technology, not in the technology itself, but in its ability to constantly keep our minds distracted and multitasking. Does anyone ever just sit and think anymore? I wonder how much our quality of life is really improving by these cool gadgets.

I can think of so many better things to do with the money. Craziness!

I can't help but think the iPhone is where much of our technology is headed. I'm sure there were plenty of people who said, "That's crazy; a needless waste of money," about home internet service, but look at us all now!!!! It wouldn't surprise me if in 10 years or so, we all have something similar to the iPhone that will replace our computers and cell phones-- one device for it all, you know? We'll see, I guess... In the meantime, I can't fathom being able to afford such a thing!

Simple and inexpensive. We are usually one of the last to get the newest fad in technology. It really is not high on our priority list, nor is it in our budget. We do not even have a laptop yet; it's on the wish list though.

We are simple folk.

My husband does a lot of contract work, and he has an hour-long train commute to work and back, so we got him a cell phone that has email, internet, etc. capabilities. He LOVES it. He can get back to his clients as soon as they email him, and he can get things done while on the train which translates into him being able to relax more in the evenings. If we were Mac people, we probably would be excited about the iPhone too. It syncs with a lot of the things you use on your Mac (itunes, calendar, etc). It has a full web browser that can handle much more than current cell phone browsers.

You also have to realize that Mac-lovers are a passionate group of people; I am a graphic designer so I know! I work with them every day! :-) They go CRAZY anytime a new product comes out.

All this being said... I would not spend that much on a cell phone. I would also wait for the hype to die down, for them to work out the bugs kinks.

BUT... I can totally understand the craze, and I can see the desire for a cell phone that does more than just make calls.

Mac lovers are a passionate group of people, but some of them just think they are just better computers = )
Apple has been making the computers smaller and smaller so I think that they are really just trying to improve on that. Myself, I am sort of cheap or a good way to say that is frugal, I do not even have the latest in computers, why would I think that I would want something like this? Standing in line for something like that....wow! Well, it doesn't work in our state so by the time it does, everyone here said they hope they have worked out the gliches...myself, I still listen to cassette tapes and have never used an iPod or MP3 player!

Oh, I was going to say, I am glad your doctor's visit went well! I get curious as I like to know what was the complications with birth, but I understand it is hard to share info like that. I was happy to see you were laing down and resting the first while after your baby. It seems like mothers are so ready to get up and get back to work that they do not let their bodies heal the right way. It is a huge thing if you let it heal back! Keep taking it as easy as 2 children will let you!

I will confess to being a "Macaholic"! I love my iBook - all the hype aside, Apple computers work better than any PC I've ever seen, and I save so much time and trouble (not to mention repair costs)by having one. I freelance a lot of design work, so I need a really good computer. I also love my iPod, which was a birthday gift from my husband, as it allows me to have appropriate, God-honoring music with me when I travel (it can be hard to tune out the world's awful music sometimes!). I admit, when the iPhone was first revealed, my "techie" heart did a little flutter. However, as a Pastor's wife, our salary comes from the tithes and offerings of God's people, and there is no way we could ever justify spending the Lord's money on something like an iPhone. We're actually praying about eliminating cell phones altogether, as they have become such an intrusion on our lives. That's difficult for a Pastor who always needs to be available, but people did it for thousands of years, so it must be possible!

I'm so excited about your growing family, and that you're all doing well. Blessings!

I have a cheap cell phone. I do *like* the iPhone but I won't be buying one.

Anytime gadgets like these come out, we wait, wait, and wait some more. In a few years they'll be reasonably priced.

Think about computers, DVD players, plasma tvs. All those gadgets were SKY HIGH when first released. Over time the technology changes, better stuff comes out, others figure out how to replicate it, etc.

I will say the whole idea that being frugal or living a life of simplicity and technology not being allowed at all is not how we do it. As if you're more holy because you down technology or snub it completely. Bunk.

We embrace technology---those things that truly help us or bring peace in our lives. I'd rather have a good cell phone that works than the cheapo model from walmart that will break within a months use. I've learned to apply this principle in most areas; sometimes you do have to spend more to have a quality product that will last. Always having the "best deal" or "cheapest product" doesn't always equate to good stewardship when you have to replace it every so often.

I'm off topic now :) Glad you're feeling better.

Well, I have to start by saying, I would have a hard time buying such a large ticket item that we really don't need.....BUT... the iPhone is a big deal for a lot more reasons than just being a nifty phone. It really is a huge jump in technology. despite being a button-less phone, there are many things this phone does that no other phone or pda even attempts at doing, and they make it so usable for the average person. I have to admit to being in favor of mac's over pc's, but you have to agree that Apple has raised the bar really high in their understanding of usability and technological advances. My husband is a web developer and mac-lover, so I hear about a lot of these techy sort of things. While this is much too expensive an expenditure for the majority of the world, you really can't dismiss this is "some phone" like all the other phones.

Lindsay: I hope no one thought I was saying I'm "more holy" because I prefer a simple cell phone. I've seriously considered getting a PDA many times and almost taken the plunge just because it would really be nice for business purposes when we are traveling. And I totally understand why they would be really helpful to certain people with certain jobs. My reasoning for never getting one thus far is because I am afraid I won't be able to "unplug" - When you have a home business, there is always work that can be done and if you're not careful, it can take over your life. Sure, it might be nice to be able to answer emails and take care of business work when I am out and about, but I want to be able to unplug and focus on my family or whoever I am with - not be glued to a little portable gizmo. Emails and business work can wait until their allotted time in my day.

All this to say, I think that we all need to be able to unplug and take a break from technology. Technology is great when used wisely (I am so thankful for my laptop and wireless - especially these past few weeks as I've mostly been on bed rest or in the hospital!), but I think it can go overboard very easily if we're not careful. If we have no life outside of a virtual life or if we spend more time cultivating virtual relationships and doing things online, than loving and serving our families and reaching out to those in our church, neighborhood, and communities, something is seriously wrong.

Anyway, just to clarify. :) There's so much more I could write on the subject, but I must be off now to nurse Kaitlynn. Thanks for all the great comments and input. It's been enlightening!

Too funny - I just went on a bit about this myself before I came here to check how you were feeling!

http://momnmore.blogspot.com/2007/06/iphone-frenzy-need-vs-want.html

I'm with you, Crystal. I can see where the technology of certain things *might* benefit me in a way, but I am concerned about being able to unplug. And I'm sure not willing to pay that much for the thing either.

Two years ago I was required to have a landline in order to operate the fax machine my employer required me to have. When I was laid off by them, I quite happily cancelled the landline. My cell phone has unlimited long distance and I used it for those sort of calls anyway! Now with an upcoming move I can be assured that all calls to my family (who happen to have the same carrier as me) are "IN" the plan - no additional fees, no long distance, no worries. And no extraneous bills. ;-)

Crystal,

I tried to wait until the frenzy died down, but a belated congratulations on Kaitlynn! :)till praying for your continued recovery.

I agree with you on the iPhone craze, it's not my thing. I crave being "unplugged," and try to do things to prevent technology from taking over my life, such as writing letters to friends that go into the actual mail, and putting a time limit on the internet. I've noticed when I first started doing this that it was very difficult to sit and relax with no TV or background noise, and I was very uncomfortable and felt bored. However, now that I make this a daily routine, I crave quiet time, and even enjoy excuses to not be in a rush, like waiting in line or being in traffic. Do I sound crazy??

Random question: Do you and Jesse have a TV in your home, and do you use it regularly?

Crystal,

Glad you are feeling better.

I think the IPhone craze is just silly. No offense, but Apple has always seemed to promote the self indulgent lifestyle. (The 'I' infront of their products?...spare me...Steve Jobs, please put on a suite. You are too old for the hip "jeans" look.)

I really AM old-fashioned. I don't have a cellphone. My husband has a very basic one that he uses to ask me if I need milk on the way home. I probably will get one soon for emergencies, but we live in the sticks, so it is hard to even get a signal.

The buttonless pad on the IPhone seems like a disaster waiting to happen. I hate touch screens. I think this is only going to be popular with the teens and college people. I don't know why they don't just wait a bit until the prices come down. There is a new version being released at the end of the year, too, I think. Patience people!

On PDAs: These are useful. When ours died it was sometimes difficult to figure out what we were doing when. It is really, really useful. A pocket calendar is almost as good, of course--but a pocket calendar won't sync with your computer, won't beep at you when you need to get somewhere, and is unlikely to be something you can get your husband to take charge of ;)

Crystal,
I totally agree with your comments here.

It's unfortunate that our society has become one where electronic gadgets keep us from true interaction with people. I get so tired of seeing people in stores with a phone/ear piece attached to their head because they can't miss that important call!

We have to be careful as individuals to not cross that line over to idolatry. Anything can become an idol, and I think it's too easy for people to justify why they need such items, or why they have to have that IPod, that new computer, that new whatever that will be taking precious time & money out of their lives, and possibly time away from those who matter. No, you don't "need" it, you "want" it. If one has debts that need to be paid, or if you have family needs that are not met, it's unwise.

I am sidetracking a bit, but feel this is important to share. As a parent who lost my child, there were times I was online (trying to learn to be a better wife/mother) that I could have spent with my child. This is something that makes me very sad, because I would like to have that time back and I cannot. As wives and mothers, I really wish people would sometimes think of how important it is in how you spend your daily time with things like the computer, t.v, etc. If you are on the computer for long periods of time each day, then maybe it's TOO much. Only you know what is too much for you and your family. Also, it is possible to be "addicted" to being online - even blogging. Don't think you are immune to it.

If your children are vying for your time vs. the computer, or your home is not totally together or clean, or your husband is wishing you'd spend more time with him - maybe it's time to work on your priorities. When we are not good stewards of our time and our money, we rob God! And we rob ourselves & our loved ones too.

The computer and all these tools can be useful - but they can be detrimental, too. Each time you bring one of those "toys" into your home, remember, you are taking away time in your life to use it! I personally don't snub technology totally (it has its place, albeit small). However, it will never replace memories with those you love. In the end, this is what truly matters.

As for gadgets, well, I'm rather old-fashioned! My Nokia's nearly 3 years old and is simply a phone! I don't intend to get a new one until I have to! I think mobile phones definitely have their uses, but I have better things to spend my money on just now!

I think if someone wants to spend that kind of money on a phone then they should, I'm just not one of them. I'm too frugal for that, not that I wouldn't take a free one :)
