Frugal Fridays: Kefir smoothies

Looking for an incredibly easy, very inexpensive, and very healthful breakfast solution? Try kefir smoothies.

I'd heard about the health benefits of kefir for a long time, but from what I had researched, it was hard to find kefir grains so I'd never pursued it any further. Then Tammy got hooked on making kefir and she offered to send me some of her extra grains. And so my kefir-making began...

For those who are unfamiliar with kefir, Tammy did a great writeup here with all the basics. Lest you think I'm some pioneer woman, let me tell you, this stuff is really easy to make. If I can do it, anyone can. Tammy has detailed instructions here. It just requires a few minutes everyday and the health benefits are enormous. (You can read about some of the health benefits here and here.) I especially am glad to be drinking it while I'm nursing and Kathrynne loves it, too!

We have been making smoothies for breakfast almost everyday with our fresh kefir. I just put in a bit of frozen or fresh fruit and a frozen banana or two.

This morning's kefir smoothie included fresh strawberries, kiwi, and some frozen bananas.

Delicious, quick, inexpensive, and most of all nutritious!

I love kefir and what you made looks just like what we had for "snack-tivities" last night! (Still making mine in the oven, I'll have to go see what Tammy has to say!)

We love smoothies here too! I have to make them non-dairy, so I usually use rice milk, a little juice and then fruit & sometimes a small amount of natural sugar or sweetener, depending on the fruit chosen. I also add soy or rice protein powder to give it a boost.

Some combos I like are raspberry/peach, berries (mixed), peach/orange, mango/orange, banana/orange. I even tried cherries with chocolate soy protein powder. All delish! Smoothies are great because they give you fluids your body needs, fruit servings for the day & with protein they are a complete meal too. I will sometimes make them as a snack also.

Yours looks delicious!

Sounds intriguing! I think I will try it if I can get some grains! However, what do you do if you want to save the grains but not make any kefir? Like if you were going away for the weekend or something?

I've never had kefir, but it would certainly be interesting to try.

Oooh, my kids and I LOVE kefir smoothies. Sometimes, if I have some extra smoothie, I will put it in paper cups with popsicle sticks and make smoothie popsicles for the kiddos. They love them! Another reason I love the smoothies? They help keep my 3 year old DS "regular" (if ya' know what I mean...).

I absolutely LOVE kefir. Smoothies are my favorite summer treat; I make them with kefir or low-fat plain yogurt.

That's exactly what we do every morning!! :) I use kefir for lots of stuff and I know it is sooooooo good for you!

This is my favorite way- half kefir, half milk and really really ripe frozen bananas, ooh so yummy!

We get bananas for 18 cents on Thursdays at Walmart, so I really stock up.

The smoothie looks delicious. BTW, I put two links on Frugal Friday. Sorry about that. It's my first time participating and I typed in the wrong address in the first one.

I have also just started with kefir after reading Tammy's blog. I found someone local that had milk kefir and water kefir grains. So I have been making both! I just store my grains in the fridge until I am ready to use them. They are very hard to "kill". (which is a good thing!;)

One great benefit from using the kefir is my husband has noticed a difference in his stomach. I think he had irritable bowel, and drinking a small glass of kefir smoothie in the morning has completely taken care of it...if he doesn't get his smoothie he notices right away.

I am relatively new to your blog but I have been encouraged and challenged with all that I have read. I appreciate your attitude toward your God-given role of wife and mother. I have read some wonderful books lately and some of your articles have teamed up with what I have been learning.
Thank you for your Frugal Fridays, shopping ideas and your encouraging articles about biblical submission. What peace it brings to the home when I do things God's way. Thanks again for all that you have shared.
I also have to thank you for the info. on kefir. I have never heard of it before but I am working to get my hands on some. My husband suffers from Crohn's disease and I would imagine that this would help his intestines. My mom also has intestinal ailments and I mentioned this to her. I hope to include this in our family's diet. It sounds like a "superfood" besides being economical.

This sounds really neat! I am new to all this healthy stuff. I would like to change our eating habbits for the better but I am at a loss sometimes as to how. This was very helpful. I also found an Everyday News video you all might be interested in on kefir. http://www.visionforum.com/hottopics/multimedia/enn/2007/02/2089.aspx

I didn't have anything to post for Frugal Friday last week, but I just have to thank you for posting about Kefir! I had never tried it and am now LOVING it, and looking forward to receiving some grains to make our own.

Thanks so much!
