Knitting in snippets

After months of my knitting needles sitting idle, I got inspired to pull them out again and start a blanket for Kaitlynn. I'm finding that there are little snippets of time here and there throughout the week where I can knit a row or half a row. It's fun to see some fruit from those little tiny moments combined. Kathrynne has already asked me to make a blanket for her, too, so I guess I have my knitting work cut out for awhile!

Crystal, what are some knitting sites or books you have found helpful? You are self-taught, correct? I am looking for places to learn new stitches, etc.

Looks so sweet! I never did learn to knit, but I love hand-knitted things.

I'm still very much a beginning knitter - but I have found I really enjoy it!

I learned from my sister who learned from a basic knitting DVD. Since then, I've just tried to teach myself new things and try new things. There are lots of helpful websites out there - some which even have video clips showing you how to do the different stitches.

Maybe some more experienced knitter here have some suggestions for those who want to learn?

I found knittinghelp.com to be extremely useful. She has videos and a forum for knitters to ask questions and post discussions.

I have to ask, though....How do you find "snippets" of time to knit when you have a newborn, toddler, husband, house, blog, and business to maintain? I have a newborn, husband, and house and I can't find snippets to make dinner or sweep the floor, let alone knit! I miss it and would love to accomplish a row a week on the blanket I started! :) I do wish I knew how you do it.

Incidentally, what pattern are you using?

Yes, knittinghelp.com shows videos of how to knit, purl, cast on, cast off, and do anything else related to knitting you would like to learn. Getting Started Knitting is a great book that teaches you a step, then offers projects with patterns so you are actually knitting a scarf or blanket after you learn your first stitch! Check out lionbrand.com for free patterns for just about anything, just sign up for their e-newsletter for free, then have access to their pattern database for both knitting and crocheting.

I have five children: 9, 7, 4, 3, and 5 months. I also knit in snippets. Waiting at the Dr.'s office, a few minutes in the morning before the kiddos get up, maybe a few minutes while their eating lunch, during nap time, and a little in the evenings before bed. I keep a clothespin in my knitting basket in case I have to stop mid-row. I clip it on the right hand needle so when I come back (it could be hours or days later) I know which position the needles were in and I don't accidentally start working backwards on the row. I also try to keep a small notepad for a running row tally in case I'm interrupted during my knitting.

Also, there's a new show on the DIY network called Knitty Gritty. It is very helpful and has lots of neat projects for knitters of all levels, plus they always have three guest knitters, some of which have been men and teen boys!

I LOVE knitting. My mother taught me to knit and crochet, and those became my favorite pastimes, along with cross-stitch. I take my knitting or crochet project anywhere I go, and work on it while I wait in line for the doctor, or even in the bus!
