Seeing is believing
I find creative marriage proposal stories fascinating and this one certainly takes the cake. I guess you could call it rather visionary.Though I like reading about humdinger proposals, I personally wouldn't have wanted one myself. And Jesse knew that, gratefully, and kept it very simple. His only goal was to surprise me - a feat that is almost impossible to do. He didn't manage to pull the proposal off without me having some idea that it was coming that night, but he did manage to blow me away by telling me he was hoping we could get married six months earlier than we'd been planning. Of course I said yes to that!
Anyone else have a unique proposal story to share?

I love great proposal stories!
Well, i have sort of a weird marriage proposal story in that my husband did not ask me to marry me!!!
Through their culture, they ask a trusted friend or elder in the church to ask the girl they like. if she says yes, then they are engaged for a couple months and get married usually.
What a great idea! I can't wait to read more.
Ours wasn't very unique but still very special to us.

It seems when I got married 31 years ago, there were not too many marriage proposals out of the ordinary, although I would have loved one. May I share about how my son proposed to his wife? It was Christmas Eve and Josh and Becky went to church with her family.
She thought the plan was that after the service Josh would be driving home to be with us. Well, he "made up a story" that he had lost his keys, and must of left them at Becky's church! So the two of them went back to the sanctuary to supposedly look for the keys. With the help of Becky's Dad & the wonderful church custodians, the dim sanctuary was filled with tea lights and candles and rose petals up to the altar. When they got to the church, Becky honestly had no idea why the sanctuary was decorated like that!! Then she saw an advent candle in the middle of the alter and it was one they had made together, so she began to wonder WHAT is going on?? Then Josh took her to the piano where he had arranged to have pictures of all the members of our family and Becky's on the piano (two families joining together), and he sang her a song, and presented her with a rose that had the ring inside. Of course he got down on one knee. After she said yes, they prayed together. There is probably a little more, but that is the main part. Of course he had asked her dad's permission, so he was in on it. My husband (and my other son) knew, because he wanted my husband's blessing and Jeremy's help in sneaking the family pictures from the house. "Us" moms didn't have a clue! We could not have been happier! There were many tears of joy shed when they announced their engagement to our family on Christmas morning!

Crystal,
I'd like to hear about your engagement story. Care to share? :)
My husband surprised me by planning a surprise trip to England, where he proposed to me in St. Paul's Cathedral. He involved both our family in the plan, so they all knew what was happening, except of course for me. I thought we were going to visit my grandma in Seattle. It was very romantic and surprising getting on a plane for the first time and having no idea where we were going. Although, I DID have an idea that this special trip would result in our engagement.
My fiancee proposed to me in April. He is a preacher (not a pastor though, he just preaches when He is given the chance at revivals, etc..) Well, one Sunday night, he was preaching at his church for his pastor. I was going to hear him, of course, and my family just "happened" to want to join me that night! *wink* So, he preached on the marriage supper of the Lamb from Revelation and the comparisons between the church and Jesus and a husband and wife relationship. Though we weren't even engaged at the time, I thought there was nothing weird about him preaching about the topic, I just thought that was what the Lord had laid on his heart (which was true, also, of course!) ... Anyways, at the end of the sermon, he asked me to come to the front for a final illustration (me, still having NO idea!)... and he got down on one knee and proposed right there in the church in front of everyone! I cried and cried, but it was wonderful. I really couldn't have asked for a sweeter, more sincere, or beautiful proposal. I never had any idea of how I wanted to be proposed to in the first place, but He did it just the right way!! It was wonderful! We are getting married in May. :)
Well, my dh's romantic proposal plans were botched up by me! He had been working far away from home for three weeks, and had decided to ask me to marry him during that time. I was to pick him up from his carpool friend and take him back to his parent's house when his shift was over.
He had mentioned to me over the phone that he needed to discuss something with me when he got back, so I showed up expecting a breakup speech. I just knew that our time apart had led him to feel that he wasn't as in love with me as when he left. Since we had only been courting five months, I had no idea he might propose! Well, I was edgy and nervous the whole drive, and he didn't want to seem to talk about whatever it was, so I assumed that he didn't want to fight all the way home. I guess he could tell that I was getting upset and overwrought by not knowing, so he said, "I've decided I don't want a girlfriend anymore." Of course, I started crying, because I just KNEW he was the one for me. The he looked at me and said, "I want a wife, will you marry me?" Once his look convinced me that he was telling the truth, I cried even more, and said yes. My dh proposed in a moving vehicle on the interstate between my town and his. If I had just kept my mouth shut I'm sure I would have gotten a romantic moonlit proposal, lol.
We were married three months after dh proposed, after only seven months of courtship, and we've been happily together for nine years this fall. I still can't wait to hear news of any kind, but dh has learned this and doesn't tease me with info. about "big news" unless he's ready to tell.
I'm not engaged, but my best friend just got engaged last week. They were talking on the beach, and her boyfriend was trying to work up to the proposal for about 2 hours, but she kept changing the subject. Finally they started to leave and then he stopped and was able to get it out!
Tom was planning to propose a week later than he did, in a special park where we had shared special memories.
But once he had the ring, he couldn't sleep until he asked me, so the day after he had the ring, when I came over to his apartment before we were going out for the day, he just plopped me on the sofa and asked me. He was almost as surprised as I was!
I've learned several times since that moment that once he's made a decision on something, he can't wait to share it!
How fun! My hubby and I went backpacking with his dad about 5-6months into our dating. It was a beautiful place and we made our way to the very top, in a place called Desolation Wilderness.
The next day we decided to climb to the top of the peak without his dad and did so. The view was wonderful, but Dan(now my hubby) seemed a bit distracted and preoccupied. We sat on this peak for a good 30 minutes talking about whatever...and then I finally asked him what was on his mind. That is when he asked me to marry him...of course, I said yes!
Lots of love,
Sommer
My sweetheart officially asked my father for my hand and his blessing on Father's Day. I was so excited about this and couldn't wait to see what he was going to do to propose to me. . . .
he didn't wait for long because that evening he fashioned an engagement ring for me and asked me on bended knee. There wasn't a lot of fanfare or drama, but a deep sense of peace as we prayed together and rested in the knowledge that we were acting in God's will.
I wish that I could still wear my official engagement ring, but it was fashioned from a dark yellow twistie-tie from a bag of bread and couldn't hold up to the elements that well. It is something that I will cherish forever.

I'm an RN and had just started a new job working the night shift at a local hospital. My now husband is a detective, but was a police officer in uniform when I had started this new job. He came up to the unit I was working on (in uniform) and was asking some of the other nurses where he could find me. Well, they all thought I was in big trouble, like I was going to be taken to jail or something. He ended up finding me and proposed to me right there in the hallway of the hospital. The difficult part was that it was the beginning of my shift and I had another 12 hours that I had to work; little difficult to concentrate with a brand new diamond ring on your finger! We'll celebrate our 5th anniversary in November of this year.

I actually asked my husband to get married. He's kind of shy, and after three months of me going by his office every single day, he finally took the hint and asked me out on a date. We had only been dating for six weeks when I said, "let's get married". After how long it took for him to even ask me on a date, I thought I would have to wait forever for him to ask me to get married, and I wasn't taking any chances.
He said "o.k.", and we have been married for ten years and have two kids, and he is the absolute best husband and father.
P.S. We want our children to use courtship instead of dating, but we did not come from homes where that was practiced.

Ah, well, my story is "different". My husband is Ethiopian and had no idea about how Americans go about getting engaged. And my family was back home so he couldn't do it like he would for an Ethiopian girl.
So one day, while we were talking, and I had *no* idea his interest in me was serious, he just said "So, could you marry a man like me?" (meaning an African). And I said sure, why not. And then he said "Well, would you marry me then?". You could have knocked me over with a feather. I did tell him we'd have to ask my parents, and we did, over the phone, but they asked us not to make anything official until my dad got to meet Josiah. No engagement ring, no kneeling, no romantic setting. We were sitting in the front room of a rural health clinic when he asked me!
I was 28 years old and sharing a house with my 36 year old sister. Neither of us had met a Christian man we felt we could love. One day our 80yo pastor retired and a new man was called. He was single, tall, dark and handsom, and he played guitar! I asked the Lord, "Can I have one just like him?" Fastforward 9months. During this time we have seen each other only at church. My sister and I were regular tennis players (poor but regular! :)) We invited our pastor to play with us. He accepted. For the next three months we three played at a set of private courts that his landlord let him use. Finally he asked me on a date, we dated for about 1 month. He was 32 and serious about getting married. I knew he was planning to propose soon, but didn't expect it to be on the tennis court after playing about 4 sets! I was sweaty and confused (can you tell I was losing!) Dh told me to come to the net. When he said, "Will you marry me?" I thought what is he talking about?? Then I thought, "Hurry up and say yes before he takes back the offer!" So I quickly said yes, and he kissed me across the net. We tried to play more games, but now my concentration was really shot and so was his! :) We had no ring on that day but his love was all I wanted. It still is!
I usually tease that dh did "court" me because we spent so much time there, but now that I understand real courtship, and that is what we want for our three girls! :)
To God be the Glory! Eva
How ironic that you posted this today, because my boyfriend (well, now my fiance!) proposed to me TODAY!!!!!! We went to Catalina Island off the coast of California, and we rented a kayack. We were paddling for about two hours when we decided to go back. We took a break, and my fiance jumped out of the kayak, into the water, and proposed to me with his great grandmother's ring his family had given him!!!! WOW! I still in disbelief because it was so perfect!!!! I NEVER suspected a thing the whole time. He was worried I would have seen the box in his pocket but I didn't. AHHHHHHHHHHHH! WOW! I thank the Lord everyday for such a wonderful man... I can't wait to start my life with him!!!
Congratulations, Mermade! Thanks for sharing with us!
Could someone explain what dh means.
anonymous - I think dh is short for "dear husband"
ds= dear son
dd= dear daughter
