Challah!
After my laundry soap disaster, I was a bit leery of trying anything very domestic for awhile. Notwithstanding, I worked up the courage to attempt making challah today.
I mixed up the dough in the bread machine to save on time and energy. It took me a few attempts to figure out how to braid it correctly, but I finally got the hang of it. I brushed mine with water (Jesse's not big on things being brushed with egg as the recipe called for) and sprinkled it with sugar.

And what do you know? It's not as pretty as Tammy's, but it wasn't a complete flop either! We all loved it and it's definitely something I'll be making again.
Speaking of recipes, for those who haven't been frequenting my new Money Saving Mom blog, there's lots of good stuff up over there, including our $35 menu for this week.

Lovely! Tammy's recipe is great, isn't it? This one is delicious, too, you just have to increase the sugar/honey: http://chaitimeblog.wordpress.com/mayas-cinnamon-raisin-challah/
It's really, really good with raisins mixed in, too! Great braiding...
That is very pretty! Yours looks wonderful. I expect it tasted delicious. I would kind of like to try to make it sometime, but I kind of go into panic mode whenever I try to cook something (good thing I have a while before I get married!)
Your Challah looks great! We make it weekly for our Sabbath meal, and it takes sometime getting used to braiding. It tastes great with some honey butter!
That looks so good!!
Mazel Tov and you made it right in time for Sukkos (the Feast of Tabernacles)
Next time, try a small braid on top of the large braid. Take a third of the dough, make the smaller braid, then use the remaining dough to make the larger braid.
Brush the top with water, place the small braid on top and pinch the ends. Tuck them under and bake a few minutes longer than the receipe calls for. Looks really neat!

Can I ask which setting you used on your bread maker?
Was it just the dough setting?
I posted about making doughnuts using my bread maker this week, I didn't realise they were so easy to make.
Thanks for this - I'd love to try it.
Mummymac: I just used the dough setting. It seemed to work pretty well. Yum, doughnuts? I'll have to check those out!
You did a great job braiding!! Not so easy as it looks I have found. And it must have been a great day weather-wise for baking...great rise too!! I make it from scratch sometimes...adding lots of currents, pecans, etc. to it. Because Sabbath is sweet and this is a way to remember...someone told us that is the practice in Israel...breads for Shabbat are with added things.
I think your challah looks delicious! As much as I try, I can never get that braiding correctly.
I love making - and eating Challah! I got hooked on it during a study trip to Israel. Nothing like a fresh warm loaf right from the bakery! Braiding it is tricky, but be encouraged: the second try will be much easier.
Crystal - If you want to get the shiny goldenness like Tammy's, you can also use either milk or melted butter brushed on (instead of egg whites). Egg whites are used in the recipe so that it will be parve (meat and dairy free) and can be eaten with meat in a meal.
Now I'm going to have to try the recipe, it looks so good!
Oh, I meant to say that your braid looked great, but that it would be easier for you to do next time around. Hmmm ... now I am feeling hungry!
Wow! That looks wonderful! You should be really proud of yourself. I wouldn't let anyone eat it- it is too pretty :)
