Homemade pizza in less than 30 minutes
We love homemade pizza at our house. It's filling, inexpensive, and yummy. Best of all, though, it's very easy to make and so much better than carryout or frozen pizzas!
I've tried many different pizza crust recipes and this one is not only our favorite, it's also one of the quickest to make. The pizza, from start to finish, can be ready to pop in the oven in less than 15 minutes.

Dissolve the yeast in the water. Add the rest of the ingredients in and mix.
Dump onto a floured surface .

Knead into a smooth dough (five minutes or so).

Roll out and press down onto a greased pizza pan.

Add toppings. (Have fun and be creative with this! Our favorite variety is salsa or barbecue sauce, diced cooked chicken, and cheese.)

Bake at 450 degrees F. for around 12-15 minutes until the crust looks crispy and lightly browned.
By the way, you can make up a double or triple batch of the pizza crust dough and freeze the extras if you don't need it. This speeds up the preparation even more as all you have to do is pull out a bag of dough and a bag of chopped cooked chicken in the morning and then put the pizza together right before you're ready to eat. You can also freeze the pizzas already cooked - but I doubt it would ever stay uneaten long enough to make it to the freezer around here!
If you make homemade pizza, I'd love to hear what kind of toppings you use on yours. Feel free to share your favorite recipe if you have one, too!

This sounds good!
We make our own pizza crusts too. Nothing better than homemade!
btw, I have something for you over on my blog.
My all time favorite is ham and pineapple! If we're really feeling adventureous, we'll add green pepper and onions. Funny thing is, neither of my girls like pizza! What's up with THAT??? :-)
Blessings--
Dana
We love home made pizza too. My hubby is allergic to pork so we either make veggie - with onions, garlic, bell peppers, tomatos, etc. or sometimes hamburger with onions and garlic. You could make one with a mustard like sauce and then put hamburger, onions, cheese, and pickles. I like that buy hubby does not.
Hi! One topping which I use for my family is salsa, mozarella, a mixture of coloured bell peppers, onions and salami. Another topping is salsa, mozarella, cheddar, eggs, mushrooms and ham. I always sprinkle some dried oregano on my pizzas. I also make the dough myself :)
Your pizza looks so yummy and I will try that topping myself!

My recipe is similar, but makes 2 pizzas, so we always freeze one of them for later. My recipe calls for par-baking the crust so I usually just par-bake and then top the pizza and freeze. Then I bake it all the way when I'm ready to use it. I use the same dough for Stromboli too, which is really good. Our favorite toppings are the more traditional ones-pizza sauce, pepperoni, sausage, green peppers, mushrooms- a combination of what ever I have on hand. We also really like pesto spread on the crust with some roasted or sauteed veggies on top. Yum!
This is great; thanks for sharing! Our pizza night is Fridays, so I'll have to try your recipe tomorrow. 30 minutes sounds good to me!
We usually do a mix of veggies, like onions, bell pepper, olives, and mushrooms, and sometimes a bit of ground beef (if I have it). Sometimes it's also fun to do a dessert pizza, with carmelized apples and cinnamon!
I'm a traditionalist. When we make homemade pizza I like to use tomato sauce, garlic, fennel, ground beef, pepperoni, parmesan, and mozzerella. But the best part is sprinkling on the fresh, chopped basil and oregano from my herb pots. (So much more flavorful than dried.) Baked on my pizza stone, it's perfect!
You know, I never have enjoyed homemade pizza. Maybe I ate a few too many fast food pizzas in my day, but the 'real' thing just doesn't taste very good to me.
Maybe I'll try them with alternative toppings, like the barbecue sauce and chicken. That might help me get over my aversion. :)
thanks for the recipe! I make bread lots, but never have tried my own pizza dough! very cost effective !
xoxox
My husbands's favorite is italian turkey sausage and peppers. Our usual Saturday night pizza dinner.
One of my husband's favorite meals is homemade pizza...I can't even remember the last time we bought one. However, the crust recipe that I use always takes at least an hour (for the most part I've just used bread recipes), so thank you for posting this one!
One variation that we really like is "stuffed crust," (we love cheese!!!) though it does use a bit more cheese, so we save it as a special treat. Simply roll out your dough a little bigger than you normally would, and then you will have room to "stuff" the cheese in. I am going to post a "demonstration" on my blog soon, so perhaps I can send the link.
Crystal,
How thick does your bottom crust come out? We prefer thick crust pizza....could you show us a picture of it cut so we can see how thick the dough comes out?
Thanks!
Jen
Ooo, that looks yummy!
What size crust does that amount make? Of course, I know you can stretch it for thin crust, but you can't stretch too much. All of us love pizza, and my almost-12 year old has been able to out-eat me on pizza for years now!
We usually go pretty traditional - pepperoni, maybe ham. DH likes anchovies, blech. LOL
Jen - It's pretty thick, at least much thicker than thin crust from Pizza Hut. I'd show you a picture, but, um, the pizza is all gone. :)
InsertWittyBlogHere: It makes about one normal size pizza pan - not the huge pizza pans, mind you, unless you wanted pretty thin crust. If it were more than my husband, daughter, and I eating, I'd double the recipe.
Great post, Crystal! I'm sad that one poster said she didn't like the real thing compared to carry out!! :( We ALWAYS had homemade pizza growing up (a must for a family of 9 kids!) and NOTHING compares to a fresh out of the oven, homemade pizza! I'm spoiled because my mom made the best! I enjoy the ones I make, but I still long for my mom's! ;) She just had the knack for it - although we use better toppings (sausage and pepperoni gets old after a while). We like ham and pineapple or a BBQ chicken pizza with BBQ sauce, grilled/cooked chicken bites and sliced red onion with lots of cheese. A chicken alfredo pizza is also good for a change of pace. I don't use sausage or pepperoni too much as they are so greasy!
I have a recipe for my bread machine but it actually took longer to make than this, though it is yummy!
Do you ever make up some and refrigerate for use later? I see the stores have the dough you can just buy in a bag that you simply roll out (expensive though!). The last time I put mine in the fridge to use later it tripled in size and made a mess! I havent tried it again but maybe this recipe is better! Thanks for sharing.
Stephanie @ atime4everything.com
i just made your recipe for lunch, its in the oven! cant wait to try it... the dough was a breeze! i doubled the recipe for our larger family!
Crystal...what size pan do you use? That might help us ladies gauge how thin a similar or different size would be in rolling it out. Haven't made pizza for a bit but have older airbake pans(makes bottom a bit crispy though aluminum or non-stick isn't favored) with holes(this limits pressing dough in pan for final sizing as it goes though holes). Some ladies use a pizza stone. Anyone want to share different results based on baking method?
Family enjoys Aldi tomato sauce(small can for 1 airbake pan) doctored with parmesan cheese or garlic powder, etc. with oodles of fresh veggies slightly precooked and sometimes sausage or chicken and mozzarella and cheddar or other cheeses grated. I usually exchange half or less of white flour in recipe for whole wheat ~ use sea salt, olive oil ~ and add honey rather than sugar to yeast and let it "work" a bit before adding to flour. For a less soggy and more raised dough top, I prebake the dough a bit before adding other ingredients. A little olive oil is brushed on the crust left exposed. Takes a little more time but not much. Yum.
My belly bell is ringing for pizza. :-)
My husband likes spicy so I do a buffalo chicken pizza. Ranch or blue cheese dressing for the sauce and chicken soaked in hot wing sauce, green onions, chopped tomatoes and cheese. Spicy but so good!
I will give your dough a try for our Pizza Friday. I like ground beef and pepperoni and hubby likes sausage and pepperoni. We do a half/half mix.
Thanks for the recipe!
My pizza dough recipe is almost identical. The only difference is that mine does not have any oil in it. My dough can be very sticky and difficult to work with because there is no fat in it. I'm wondering if your dough is any easier? How easy is yours to work with?
Ewokgirl: It's very easy to work with, at least in my opinion. It's a very soft dough. My favorite part about it is that it doesn't have to rise. :)
That's pretty much the same crust recipe we use too. Our secret "yumminess" is in the sauce...it's my grandmother's recipe and it's full of spices. We always have plain pepperoni and cheese pizza, but it's always AMAZING! :)
Are you using whole wheat flour? If you aren't it is an easy and healthy substitution. You might need more water though. Also, I seem to remember a study that showed that longer rising times contributed to more vitamins in the crust. After I read that, we started making our dough in the morning. We love homemade pizza!
We pretty much like traditional pizza, but my favorites are a little different.
I like one that has garlic, chicken, spinach and tomatoes, mushrooms, cheese on it with a red sauce.
My sister made one that is so good where instead of sauce you use ranch dressing, a clove of fresh garlic and then top with mozzerella cheese, cooked chicken, olives, mushrooms, thinly sliced tomatoes, and a bit more cheese. Sprinkle with basil and parmesan cheese. Bake until done! This is really good! I also like veggie pizza which is not really pizza. There was a chicken ceasar salad pizza also we made that is really good!
it was good BUT IT WOULD HELP IF I GREASED THE PAN!
Funny you'd post this just as I was looking for a pizza recipe... I made it for our supper tonight! I snuck a bite--DELICIOUS! (And SO easy.) Thank you! :)
To keep the pizza from sticking to the pan, we always grease AND sprinkle the pan with cornmeal before sticking the crust on. The cornmeal really helps, and I think, makes the crust taste better!
This is just like our recipe (well, I think pretty much exactly the same, even down to the baking time and temp! :D) and it is really yummy!! :)
I put mine on a 16-inch round pizza pan and it makes a fairly thick crust. I've found that letting the dough rise (on the pan) for 15-20 minutes ends up making a VERY thick crust (I was shredding cheese while it sat there! ;D) whereas putting the toppings on and baking immediately makes the crust thinner and denser. :)
My only other comment is that I've NEVER had my homemade pizza ready to bake after only 15 minutes!! I think it takes me at least 15 minutes just to get our toppings ready, while my bread machine kneads the dough. :) But, we're picky about our cheese... it has to be block mozzarella that I shred myself... the pre-shredded kinds taste funny to us! :D
Mmmm... I love pizza. We enjoy homemade pizza often around here! Our favorite is this:
Saute a couple of cloves of garlic (minced) in some olive oil. Brush the garlic olive oil over the pizza crust, then add some spinach leaves, and top with cheese-- we like extra-sharp Cheddar and Parmesan, or sometimes some Feta. Yummy delicious!
Yay! This is the recipe that I sent you back when you were on the hunt for a good pizza dough recipe!! I'm so excited that it made it to your blog! hee! hee!
love,
heather in pa
p.s. would you believe that this recipe was found in a mennonite cookbook? so much for a good italian recipe...ha! =)
We love making homemade pizzas! My husband and I like to try different combinations. Our favorite one is roasted red peppers, mushrooms, marinated artichokes, and black olives.
Tammy L - I didn't know this was just like your pizza dough recipe - I've not checked yours out! My bread machine dough cycle takes 1 1/2 hours. How do you do yours in the bread machine? Do you have a short dough cycle? I've also found that it seems to be not as soft made in the bread machine - maybe I'm not doing it right, though? I'd love any tips.
I timed my pizza making from two nights ago and it took me 28 minutes from starting to make the dough, to pulling the finished pizza out of the oven. It might be so quick for me since we keep the toppings really simple and I use chicken that is already cooked and chopped. It's probably that I'm just fast and sloppy! :)
Heather - didn't know this was your recipe or I would have given you credit. :)
I love artichoke, spinach, mozzerella, feta and tomato pizza. Also, being from New Orleans, we love crawfish on our pizzas! (When they're in season, of course!)
yummmmmmmmmmmmmmm we LOVE pizza
Cool, I am trying this tonight. BTW, I got the Supermarket Savings the first day. haven't had an opportunity to listen, but have checked out the message boards. Thanks for the great deal!
I made pizza on Sunday after church with a whole wheat recipe, but I cooked it on a cookie sheet (all that I had). I need to get a pizza stone; I like crusty crusts:) I put fresh sliced tomatoes, thinly sliced zuchinni, moz. cheese, tomatoe sauce, and Canadian bacon on our's.
Dh loves carmelized onioins, too. So, I think I will try that with some type of meat, most likely the bacon as I have that left in the fridge.
Mmm...I saw your recipe first thing this morning, and I've been craving pizza ever since! I'm planning to try your crust recipe for dinner tonight and top with mozzarella, chicken, zucchini, red onions and their green tops, mushrooms, olives, and this Roasted Garlic Sauce.
My husband loves pineapple and canadian bacon. I really like olive, mushroom, and sometimes sausage.
Yummy!
I have tried homemade pizza dough before and it has not come out right so I will try your recipe! Thanks!
Lauren
Ok you got me out of a rut I have been in.This one post and it had me thinking of all kinds of things for pizza and tonight we are having pizza for dinner so this helped me break away from the normal pizza blues we have been feeling. I made Philly Steak and Cheese pizza I had thin cut steak strips we bought cheap made an alfredo sauce from a MYO mix I make added some green peppers and onions soaked the beef in worcheshire sauce first and sauted it up. We used a white cheese mix for the cheese and it looks so good I cant wait for hubby to come home which should be soon. I made the kiddos the BBQ chicken pizza and they added bacon bits. I am so excited for him to see it since I know he will love it. I am going to post a picture on my blog in the morning and send them over to you for the dough recipe I usually make a large batch for about 6 pizzas freeze the cooked crusts for nights I need something quick and I dont have alot of time like on youth nights at church. Erika
I don't feel sorry for someone who doesn't like homemade pizza. LOL! There are worst things to not like.
Crystal, you stole my quick pizza dough recipe and didn't give me credit! ;-) I thought I was the only one who disolved my yeast in warm water?
If you let the pizza rise someplace warm for an hour or so, the crust will be much thicker.
We tried this for dinner tonight and it was delicious. I'd never thought to try a BBQ chicken pizza but it was a hit. Thanks for the easy recipe and post more whenever you feel up to it!!
Audrey
Oh, I believe that you can get your pizza whipped up in 15 minutes... :) I always shred the cheese myself, slice onions, olives, and green peppers, etc... Once everything's chopped or sliced, it does go quickly! :D I didn't mean for my comment to sound like I didn't believe you about the time. ;)
I use my bread machine's dough setting, which is supposed to run for 1.5 hours, but I turn it off after 10-15 minutes, and take the pizza dough out and use it! :D I actually think my dough is softer and easier to press onto the pizzapan when I've used the bread machine to knead it... because the bread machine pan is non-stick and it can knead a stickier/softer dough than I can do by hand... so for pizza crust I think it's excellent. I wouldn't want to try to make an actual loaf of bread out of dough that was extra soft and sticky, though! :)
And I think this is a favorite pizza recipe of lots of people... :) You almost can't post a recipe without someone saying "Uh, this is my recipe too!!" ;)
Don't worry, Tammy, I didn't take it as you meaning that you didn't believe me. :) ;) Your pizza probably turns out looking a lot nicer than mine and it probably has a lot more ingredients on it. :) But anyway, thanks for the help with the bread machine. I know I'm dense - I never thought to stop the thing in the middle of the cycle! Thanks for a great idea, I'll have to try that!
Our favourite pizza topping is a common "gourmet" topping here in New Zealand. It is "Chicken, Cranberry and Brie".
Spread the base with cranberry sauce (I use jelly rather than whole cranberries), top with sliced cooked chicken, slices of brie cheese and some mozzarella cheese (grated). Sometimes we also add chopped red and green peppers and red or white onion.
Our other favourite is one we made up. It is "Pumpkin and Feta".
Spread base with tomato paste, top with chunks of roasted pumpkin, chunks of feta cheese, red or green capsicum, chopped red onion and mozzarella cheese. We leave it plain for the kids but sprinkle with cayenne pepper for the adults. Yum!
I love broccoli pizza too! I tried this in Germany and it was so good. Just tomato paste/sauce, cooked broccoli and cheese. We sometimes add other veggies (like courgette/zuchini, cauliflour etc).
Louise in NZ
Oh, I forgot to mention that we often make pizza on Pita Bread. I don't know if you can get the same stuff in the States but we can buy them in small rounds (like a teacup saucer size) and so we let the children make their own pizzas on the pita bread bases. Very easy and quick.
I will definitely be trying your recipe though! I wonder if I will need to double or triple the recipe to feed my family....
Louise
Hi Crystal,
Thanks for this recipe. We tried it for dinner yesterday night. It turned out delicious or so husband says. I could not try it as I have gluten intolerance. My hubby is a vegetarian, so I used jalapenos, onions, mushroom and cheese.
It was so easy to make and did not take an awful amount of time, but I was not able to finish it in 28 minutes like you. :D I was in total euphoria about having made pizza from scratch. Yaay! I have NEVER in my life done anything like that.
Way to go, AnneK!
Thanks so much for posting this recipe! I'm working on weekly menu planning and have been thinking about doing weekly pizza night on Friday or Saturday - this will make it so much easier!
One of my family's favorites is doing chicken, cheese, and olives with a ranch dressing sauce. My mom really loves it!
I've tried about a bazillion pizza crusts and have yet to find one that makes me say "WOW!!". I can't wait to try this one!
Thank you for sharing this!!
His,
Mrs. U
We love pizza. Our favorite is BLT. I bake the pizza normal:
crust, sauce, bacon pieces, moz. cheese. After it comes out of oven cool few minutes and spread mayo on top then add chopped lettuce and chopped tomatoes. yummy!!! we also BBQ chicken
We love BLT pizza. I make pizza with sauce, add bacon bits, and cheese before baking. Then when comes out of oven cool a few minutes. Spread mayo over top add shreaded lettuce and chopped tomatoes. YUMMY!!!! We also like BBQ chicken pizza
ok I bake the crust in my bread maker and this is what I do for the topping.
fry bacon and onion in a skillet and add mushrooms and a tin of tomatoes and mixed herbs.
Pour this on the pizza base and add pineapple and grated cheese.
filling can be stored in the fridge until ready to put on pizza - very handy.
My 8 yo son makes pizza every Fri (took over for me!) and our recipe is like yours, but w/o sugar (can't have sugar):
2 Tbsp. active dry yeast
1 1/2 cup warm water (actual amt varies with level of humidity - dough should be able to form a ball w/o sticking to the side of the Kitchen Aid)
1 T salt
2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
4 cups flour
We put everything in but the yeast, start the mixer and then and add the yeast. This will make two pizzas on a 16 in round thin pan and a large Pampered Chef bar pan; or the large bar and two small stones. Just depends on the thickness you want it to be.
I've made everything from Mexican pizza to Philly Cheesesteak to the standard cheese & ordinary toppings. But my hubby says he's getting tired of the same dough recipe after 10 years. Any suggestions??
My grandma added this tip-
"You can also make doughboys with the dough.make them the size of pancakes and fry them in oil until lightly brown. Sprinkle with regular sugar, Delicious!"
I remember eating them when she made them and they are delicious!
We love homemade pizza here too but we cheat a little bit on making the dough. We use the dough recipe that is in the book that came with our bread machine. That way we can start the dough before we leave the house, set the timer and the dough is ready for us to roll out on our pizza stones when we get home. The kids all want that for their birthday parties now and we love it because the dough will make two large thin crust pizzas. We always vary the toppings on ours.
We may just have pizza for supper tognight.
The family favorite is chicken made with cheddar cheese and barbecue sauce.
Thanks for the recipe.
Donna
Our favorite is to use that pizza crust recipe and then top it with Alfredo sauce. We then put on the mozzarella cheese and add green peppers, banana peppers, onions, and pepperoni. We can't get enough. We also make one with topped with melted butter, garlic and mozeralla cheese for those who don't like "pizza"
Hmmm, this sounds similiar to the one I normally do.
I love pizzas with pumpkin and spinach - everybody says "pumpkin?!" when I tell them but it is delicious!!!
I just posted my favourite pizza recipe thus far on my take charge blog. I give it 10 out of 10.
Organising queen and
Marcia's take charge blog
We tend to like more traditional pizza toppings, but the recipe for the dough sounds super easy! I will be giving that a try. Thanks for sharing!
Crystal I love homemade pizza. Due to my food allergy I've been making it for over 20 years. We're traditional in toppings but we get some of the turkey sausages from Trader Joe's from time to time. I use a crust recipe from the Encyclopedia of Creative Cooking. It has you pre-cook the crust for about 10 minutes since I was running into soggy crust. Peppers, tomatoes, sausage and the cheese and we're happy campers. We saute the sausage and the peppers a few minutes before hand.
Lately I've come across a few articles about Neopolitan pizza crust and some of the specialty pizza places in the NW. It has me wanting to try a few gourmet touches. I will probably post when I narrow it down.
Thanks for sharing your recipe.
I've been wishing I had a good pizza dough recipe - thanks for posting this! I tried it last night and it was DELICIOUS - the crust was fluffy and flavorful, unlike some of the other crust recipes I've tried. We used BBQ sauce, pre-cooked chicken chunks, red peppers, onions, and canadian bacon (per husband's request) and it turned out yummmmmy. Thanks so much!
Thanks for the recipe! It tastes wonderful. Now I can make great homemade pizza!
A friend of mine sent me to your site when I mentioned that I wanted to make Taco Stromboli, but for some reason pizza dough and I don't get along. My previous excursions always left me ripping my hair out, even when I bought it from the pizzeria and all that I had to do was stretch it out. It hated me. I just made a double batch of your recipe, and alas! I have two rectangles of dough sitting on trays waiting to be filled. Thank you for ending my dough woes! This recipe is a blessing. :)
I have to admit we often treat ourselves to dough from the local pizza shop. It's about $2 for a ball of dough that will make 2 small or one really big pizza. I figure it's a treat but it's still a lot cheaper than ordering pizza!
Our favorite topping is Italian-seasoned ground beef with sweet onions and sweet peppers (the kind in a jar for hoagies).
Another winner for me is tomato slices (in the summer!), ricotta, mozzarella, garlic, and fresh basil - no sauce.
I sprinkle parmesan on all my pizzas before baking - gives a yummy finish :)
Thanks so much for this recipe!
I love this pizza dough. I'm making it tonight again (consulting your blog for the recipe) for the third time now. Love it!
Thanks!
We put pepperoni on ours--boring, but the hubby and toddler outweigh my preferences....I think tonight I'll split up the dough. Mine will have pineapple, red pepper and tomato on it!
i lov it it sounds soo good!
Thank you for posting this! I have been wanting to try pizza but always felt overwhelmed. We tried the first time last week with this recipe and it was a HUGE success! We are going to be using it weekly every Friday for Pizza Movie Night.
Thank you so much!
Angela
Oh, well I thought I was being all frugal by using Boboli :) I will try the home-made version if you say it's easy.
I LOVE making homemade pizza, but want to make it healthier.
Do you have a good, easy recipe for whole wheat? I always have a very hard time with wheat, even when I use 1/2 white flour 1/2 wheat!
Thanks!
Amy
Your pizza looks delicious!
I would love a good recipe for easy to make whole wheat pizza crust though. I have tried 50/50 white and wheat flour, but it is still hard to manage.
I greatly appreciate any tips or recipes!!!
Amy
I finally got around to making this for dinner last night. I had a bunch of random leftovers and thought that if I covered it with some cheese it would work great as a pizza. My husband loved it.
Thanks!
Crystal,
Thank you for sharing this pizza crust recipe! I tried it for the first time tonight and it was a major hit in our house.
Also, this was my first time making pizza crust from scratch. I always felt intimidated by it for some reason. Well...not anymore. :)
