How much do you think he spent?
Since yesterday was the last day to take advantage of some of the great Kroger deals and I still had quite a bit of grocery money left in the budget for this week, my husband offered to go to the store for me so I could stay home and get some things done - like making laundry soap which I finally did last night and will post about soon! (As an aside, isn't my husband the bestest?!)
Jesse came home from the store with all of this:
27 boxes of Kleenex
32 Yoplait yogurts
10 boxes of Old El Paso Taco and Soft Taco shells
6 Armour Lunchmakers
5 cans Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup
2 packages of Mission Tortillas
1 package of Chex Mix
The total before coupons and store sales was $111.84.
How much do you think he spent? Leave a comment with your name and your guess.
Just for fun, the person who guesses the closest to the actual amount spent will win a copy of Shop, Save, and Share by Ellie Kay (a great book on bargain shopping!) and a package of goodies from me which will include: Basic H cleaner, all natural dishwasher detergent, bath salts, stationery, and some other great household products I've picked up on bargains recently.
I'll leave comments open until tomorrow night and will announce the winner and the special frugal treat I've been working on for all you bargain aficionados on Friday.

I'm sorry, but I cannot stop wondering why you bought that many Kleenex. Would it, also in light of your post on stewardship & sustainability, have made more sense to invest in some washable washcloths and handkerchiefs?

I am always amazed that you get such good deals at Krogers! Ralph's is owned by them and we never do this good!
Jenny: Because we use Kleenex, that's why. :) It was a very good deal and because of the way the deal was set up, you had to buy in multiples of 15 (15 of only certain items/brands) in order to get $5 off in addition to the store sales and coupons.
When things that we use often are on a good deal and I can wing it in the budget, I stock up to last for, well, as long as I can afford to. I'm sure I'll donate some Kleenex to others and the rest will last us through all the winter colds and probably most of next year. Meaning I don't have to buy them for at least another year!
As far as stewardship and sustainability, as most who read here know, it's something I take a balanced approach to. We use a lot fewer disposables than most people, but we haven't completely eliminated them from our lives because I weigh all the aspects - cost, time, ease, etc. when making decisions. This means we sometimes use paper plates and paper napkins and paper towels. And yes, it means we use Kleenex. I get all of these things at very inexpensive prices and we try to avoid use disposables whenever possible. We also recycle as much as we can.
Maybe someday we'll completely eliminate disposables, but at this season of our life, we do the best we can with the time, energy, and resources we have.
We all have to make our own decisions based upon how we feel the Lord is leading us and how we can best run our home in a way that honors our husbands.

From reading about all your frugal spending in previous posts, I would not be surprised if he only paid tax for all the stuff he got free! 8^D

I can completely understand why you use Kleenex, Crystal, especially with little ones. I would not knock anyone who uses cloth for such purposes, but runny noses are more of an "ewww" factor for me than using feminine cloth pads, believe it or not. And others may highly disagree with me, that's okay - we all have different opinions.
I think like you said, we all have to use what we think is best for our family. It is important for me to be very frugal too, but if I am not feeling well in particular then sometimes a paper plate is quite welcome because it lessens dishes for me and my dh (he is even less-opposed to using them then I am). Just like hanging clothes - I try to do it when I can, but honestly, it can be quite painful doing it with fibro. So I use the dryer (for shame) :). It may cost more, but it might keep me out of bed too.
I think we have to be careful to not be so over-the-top about such subjects that we think it's a crime or sin if we don't do everything frugally or simply 100%. I thank God for some of the products out there that make my life easier. If I was born in the 1800's, I would have never made it having my health issues. Like you, Crystal, I try and be frugal as much as I can in other areas to compensate, but I happily and thankfully use t.p., kleenex, and paper towels.

I was going to say $25 and change, but then another commentor reminded me about your budget...
so my official entry is going to be $11.42.
Here's hoping that someday I'll be as thrifty as you! I'm working on matching coupons to sales for stuff I need, the biggest problem is that I just don't have the space to stockpile. 15 boxes of Kleenex would wipes us out! (heh...no pun intended)
Leia: I stockpiled in a tiny basement apartment (our last residence) so I think just about everyone can to some extent (well, unless you live in an RV with five children or something!). You just have to get creative and keep other stuff to a minimum. Under beds, in our bedroom closet, in the bathroom cupboards... I came up with lots of out-of-the-way places to keep our stock. Oh and I also routinely diminish the stock - twice a year, I sell off all the extras that we haven't used or donated in a garage sale. It brings in extra $$ in a creative way, and it keeps our stock from taking over. I can't stand clutter so this is what works well for us!
I have no I idea I'm just now thinking of couponing. 6.55
