There's nothing quite like fresh-from-the-oven bread

There is something about the smell of freshly-made bread wafting through the house - something so warm, comforting, and inviting!

I have made fond memories of baking bread with my mom and siblings growing up. We didn't have a Bosch, so Mom had all of us participate in the kneading instead. She'd divvy up the big mound of bread dough into five separate smaller mounds of dough and then she would set the timer for ten minutes and we'd all roll up our sleeves and get to work. Our efforts paid off when later the bread came out of the oven and we all got to slice off a piece while it was still warm and slather it with honey and butter. Delicious!

With only two arms and two littles right now, my bread-baking isn't quite so ambitious. Instead of mixing it all up myself in the big silver bowl like my mom, I put all the ingredients in my bread machine. And instead of five loaves, I make one loaf. But, it's still homemade bread and it's still delicious.

Here's our current favorite recipe, adapted from Tammy's Recipes. I usually make it at least two or three times per week. It's so good, our little family can eat a whole loaf in a day!

Homemade Wheat Bread

1 cup warm water (110-115 degrees F.)
1 tablespoon milk
2 tablespoons oil
4 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup whole-wheat flour
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons dry yeast

Put all ingredients in the bread machine in the order listed. Set on dough cycle. When dough cycle is finished, take dough out and shape into a loaf in a greased bread pan. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 20 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees F. for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

Rebecca - You could probably make the whole recipe in the bread machine, But I prefer to just make the dough in the bread machine and bake the loaf in the oven. It just has a much softer texture that way. And it's so easy to do!

For those who don't have a bread machine, Tammy's original recipe is made not using a machine so check out that link.

Makes me want to buy a bread machine! I'm not much of a baker to try the old fashioned way.

Looks delicious and I think homemade bread says I love you to your family!

Dear Crystal,

My mom makes a lot of bread.
She grinds her own wheat. She makes a special bread and she put all sorts of seeds and stuff in it.

As someone who can't eat yeast anymore, I must say I am salivating at that loaf of bread. :)

Oh yum, yum, yum! I make most of my own bread. I don't have a breadmaker but I also don't knead it by hand because of my fibromyalgia. I have dough hooks for my stand mixer. It has been a learning process with the dough hooks but my bread is getting better and better. Not to mention healthier because I make it whole wheat and mine doesn't have high fructose corn syrup or anything. And, of course, it saves us a ton of money!

Crystal, question for you. Can you share what all you make in the bread machine or at home in terms of bread products? Like I noticed that you didn't buy bagels on your receipt you shared or bread - does this mean you make all of your family's bread and bagels? Do you make your own pasta?

Also what do you serve for snacks to your older daughter and for you and Jesse? I find that it is things like frozen waffles, bagels, pretzels, animal crackers, goldfish, etc that make a huge dent in the grocery bill and I want to get away from it. Bread doesn't preserve well though that is made fresh at home and I hardly eat bread - only my hubby does so I'm not sure that is practical. Got to be cheaper though!

Anyways if you can share what all you make vs. buy in the bread and snack type food group sometime that would be wonderful.

I am going to buy your ebook btw on grocery savings I think.

Thanks and God bless

Crystal, I used this recipe today and it is so delicious! I've tried several different wheat bread recipes and none of them worked for us. We all liked this one so much, that I think I'm gonna have to make it pretty often!

Do you know approximately how much bread this makes? I have a small machine and don't want to overflow :)

If I made this bread in the bread maker should I use the regular setting or the whole-wheat setting?

Sorry, I am still trying to figure out our bread machine, it was given to us free form a man at church, of course it did not come with a manual on how to use it!

Thanks!

Amy

I made this -- used my bread machine for the dough and then baked it in the oven. Very yummy!

I love making bread in my bread machine, but it slices terribly...it's hard to use for sandwiches or anything. How do you slice yours so nicely?
