WFMW: ABC Bible Memory Book

I wasn't planning to do a WFMW post today, but as I was sitting at the table after lunch reading Kathrynne her ABC Memory Book, I realized I had never mentioned it here and knew I had to tell you about it. I'm always on the lookout for good resources for young children and this is definitely one of my favorites.
When I was a little girl, my mom used the ABC Bible Memory Book to teach me some of the very first verses I learned. Many years later, I still fondly recall this little book and the verses in it. My mom was kind enough to get a copy for us so that I can use this same book with Kathrynn.
The ABC Bible Memory Book is easy to use and Kathrynne loves it. She will literally beg for me to read it with her. Plus, with reading through it often, she is picking up on more and more of the verses without any work or effort on my part. In addition to encouraging Bible memory, this book provides a simple way to review the alphabet and to learn numbers in the Bible verse references.
There are 26 simple verses included - one for each letter of the alphabet, of course! For each verse, there is also an accompanying picture and a short little lesson or poem to read. My only complaint with the book is that some of the verses do not start with phonetically correct pronunciations of the letter. For instance, the verse for the letter "c" is "Children obey your parents in the Lord."
Phonics aside, this book provides a great resource for teaching Scripture to young children in a simple and straight-forward manner. And that works for me!
How do you teach Scripture to your younger children?

Crystal,
This was such a burden of my heart that I recorded a CD with large passages of Scripture put to music. My children have all the songs memorized--several full chapters and some other long passages! I tried to make it enjoyable for the whole family, so they wouldn't mind listening to it over and over!
I truly don't mean to be "plugging" it here (it is for sale now :-), but it has been such a blessinng to us...I was actually thinking I had sent you one for a product review, but on second thought, I don't think I have!
Could I send you one?
This is exactly how we "did" preschool. We covered a letter a week: a Bible verse beginning with that letter, the first stanza of a hymn starting with that letter (the actual first line had to start with the letter, title doesn't matter), crafts and snacks and such - all beginning with the letter of the week.
There are several lists out there on the internet of verses/ABCs. Also I found LetterOfTheWeek.com to be helpful. For hymns I was largely on my own, but used many from CyberHymnal.org. Note: there is no hymn for Q or X, lol!
This was so much fun, and it worked easily. Visiting relatives were always amused to see what letter was "sponsoring" when they came to visit! The verses still come flooding back, too!
I just bought a copy of this last month. I'm glad to see you recommend it!
Fantastic find--thank you! My son is in AWANA's for the first time this year (he's 3) and he is so excited to learn his verses each week. I'd love to get the book that you mentioned...can't have too much of a good thing, and AWANA's really shortens the verses for the little ones--I'd really prefer that he learn the whole verse.
Wonderful WFMW tip! I am passionate about Bible memory verses for the children as well. It is a constant struggle, goal, emphasis, in our school and home.
I love hearing about new books. You should check out the Seeds for Kids praise music (can find it at CBD). We absolutely love this music (it's very fun and upbeat) and the verses are totally scripture. There are four in the series and we own them all. I've reviewed them before on my blog. You can listen to clips of the songs on Christianbook.com.
God Bless!

My works-for-me post today was about our favorite Bible story books. It is not directly about memorizing but my young children have definitely become familiar with the Bible because of these great books. Check out my blog to read about them.
I had this book, too! We have the same copy that I use with my children thanks to my mom. She keeps everything so pristine!

oh my goodness! I forgot all about this book...Thank you so much for reminding me about it.

Crystal and others, I'm curious... Did you choose KJV or NKJV for the ABC book?
When our eldest daughter was 2 I started picking out scriptures from the KJV for her to memorize. I actually started doing it while my hubby was on an overseas ministry trip, as a surprise for him when he got back.
I would read it a few words at a time to her during the day, getting her to repeat the phrases. Once we got more confident we would recite them rythmically in the car as we drove.
A laugh- when little Zara aged 2 learnt her first verse it came out like this:"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my BATH! No amount of reasoning could make her say path. But when you're 2, a light to your bath is a good thing I guess!

Crystal,
We have what I believe is an older version of this same book which I use with my son. FYI, we also have the ABC's Bible Memory Songs CD from No Greater Joy. 18 of the 26 verses are exactly the same. My son isn't talking real well yet, but I believe the CD is really helping him get a jump start on memorizing them even before he can say them. I have a list of the verses on the CD and the verses in my book which I could send you to see if they are the same as yours if you are interested. Just let me know.
I posted the what we have begun to use in a recent WMFW. It is going quite well and we are enoying it! You can read what I wrote about it here:

I will look into this. anything that would help a young one along to memorize scriptures should be a wonderful too! xoxox
Thanks for the tip. My 13 month old will love this! She already loves books, and I look forward to adding this one to her growing collection.
We implement our verses through our character training...for instance, my older son struggles with talking back and being easily angered...so one of the verses he has memorized and encouraged to reflect on regularly is James 1:19...."Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry."
I think it's helpful when they're learning verses that they can readily apply to their lives and I find that I, too, am learning just as much as they are about character. =)...it turns out, that many of their struggles are mine as well.

I have used that same book with all of our 6 children. It is pretty ragged by now, but I love it!
We teach out of the Heidelberg Catechism. Traditionally, Reformed folk have used a "graduated catechism" meaning that, throughout the years, children learn certain questions and their Scripture proofs and then build on that knowledge. As the Scripture proofs are part of the catechism, they learn those along with the questions and answers.
Thanks for this post. I ordered the Memorizer from this organization!

How wonderful that you are working on Scripture with your children!
I created my own Scripture ABC books, a different one each year from ages 3-5. I started running out of some letters after that! :)
They've been a great tool because they now know 72 verses by heart. We just reuse the books now, and then I teach them Scripture that is especially meaningful to us for some reason or another.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful tip!
Something I recently found out about is God Rocks it's based in Canada.
What I've seen and heard - all the songs are exact Scripture and really good songs too! (not cheesy)
They have CD's and Videos which I have not ordered yet, but plan to for Christmas gifts.
I guess the God Rocks cartoon is on TV in Canada, but I had not heard about it till I saw a Canadian Christian Talk show.

Hi Crystal, Our church used this book for a children's Bible memory program when I was a child. We all loved it!
Bessers and all,
This is my first time to run across this wonderful site. I don't really blog. I was searching for ABC memory verse books. Bessers, I couldn't write you. I would like the list of verses in the book and on the CD you offered to Crystal, if you don't mind. My e-mail without the spaces is b b love gr @ bju.edu I was looking at that CD on eBay a few days ago. Since I haven't heard it, I was wondering what the songs sound like. We are pretty conservative and like non-rocklike songs.
My sister in law, who is a pastor's wife with very verbal 2 and 3 year olds, just sent me a link to the Bible verse book she is using, and it is very good. It has the verse, a summary truth, and a great story to illustrate the truth, 2 pages per letter. I was able to view the pages of the book on Amazon. I discovered the pictures are on the 2nd page. It is My ABC Verses Hiding God's Word in Little Hearts by Susan Hunt: http://www.amazon.com/My-ABC-Bible-Verses-Hiding/dp/1581340052/ref=si3_rdr_bb_product
Does anyone know where I can view the insides of the book you all are talking about? I would like to compare.
Thanks!
