Teething??

Kaitlynn (4 months old) has been extra fussy and clingy the last few days and the thought keeps crossing my mind that she's possibly teething. I really doubt it, especially since Kathrynne didn't start teething until much later, but it made me curious:

When did your children start teething and when did they get their first teeth? For those of you with more than one child, did you find each child started teething at completely different ages or were they all on similar time tables?

My daughter began teething at three months of age, and went on to cut her first two teeth at four months of age. While I do not have any other children yet, my mom has shared that both my sister and myself were early teethers too, and had cut our first teeth by the same age as my daughter.

I started teething at, around four months I think. My sister Sara at around six months, Ronnie at around the same time as Sara and Anna started teething at around four months as well. Forgive me, but how old is Kaitlynn? :-P

My kids have been on the same timetable for almost EVERYTHING (birth gestation, birth weight, time of birth, weight, height, growth patterns, etc.) except teething! My daughter was the typical teething 6.5-7 month old and continued to get teeth throughout the rest of her first year. My son must take after me (I didn't get teeth until 12 months). He got his first two teeth at 10 months and now that he's nearly 12 months, 2 eye teeth are popping through!
I've heard of babies getting teeth as young as 2 or 3 months, so it definitely could be teething!

My first was 6 months before cutting her first tooth, the second 8 months, and the third almost 10 months!

It's always possible that Kaitlynn is just an early teether. Is there a chance she might just be in a growth spurt, though?

I have four babies. My oldest had her first tooth at 10 months. My next at 10 months. My third at five months and my fourth (who is now six months old) at five months. Your dd definetly could be teething. My early teethers made nursing a little uncomfortable (lol). My older babies understood much better about not chomping on mommy. My five month olds took a little longer to get the point (lol).

Our most recent teether cut his first tooth at 4 months and four days, but he had started teething probably a month before that so it is very possible that you'll be getting a glimpse of those pearly whites soon'ish ;). As far as consistency my children have been all over the place! From Andrew's first tooth at four months to Bethi's first tooth at eight months, the other two were around five or six months.

Our son started teething at four months, and the first tooth showed itself a few days before five months. His next SIX teeth followed about a month or two later. The four first-year molars came in at 12 months, and at almost 16 months, he has all four canines poking through. I'm hoping his two year molars will come in early and we'll be done by Christmas!

My first daughter got her first tooth at 4 months. Next daughter at 6 months and next at 10 months.

I guess anything goes with each individual child. One of our doctors said his son was born with a tooth coming through.

I hope she gets to feeling better. Some of my kids didn't seem to mind much, but my son was terribly fussy and was the one that ran a slight fever with every tooth. (Of course doctors say that is just a myth....hmmm)

Any signs of fever or other unwell behavior? For some reason my first thought was thrush (which can be present without a fever).

But mostly likely, it's either a growth spurt, teething, or she's begun her separation anxiety phase a little early. :) Both my babies started teething around then; one of my cousins got her first tooth at like 3 weeks or so...she had almost a full set of teeth by age one. On the other hand, my sister didn't get ANY teeth until she was almost a year old. Babies are so silly that way. ;)

My son and daughter both got their first tooth at 5.5 months old. They began exhibiting teething signs around four months and had swollen gums for about a month until the teeth finally popped through. I looked back in the baby book and my son (now two years old) had eight teeth by the time he was a year old, and now my daughter at eight months has five teeth. So I guess both of them are following the same track. Except for the occaisonal nip, I haven't had problems with nursing a teething baby.

I thought my son was teething for months... he would drool like crazy and go through moody periods. It wasn't until his 9 month mark though that I finally saw some action in the teething department.

One more thought...if you've chosen to vaccinate, that could also be her reacting to the vaccine (not in an alarming way) if she's had it within the last 2-3 weeks. :) 2 weeks is usually the peak of reaction.

Elena got her first two teeth at three months!! It was so surprising to us. But looking back we realized that she was drooling a lot for a few weeks before hand. We just thought she was to little to be getting teeth. We were wrong. : )

I agree with Cathy that it could be a growth spurt. Feeding her more often is worth a try to see if that helps!

My son was very fussy (and up a lot at night) for the first seven months of his life. I don't think it was teething, it was just his personality! (And I think he was genuinely hungry in the middle of the night.) Although he got very cranky and drooly at three months old, he didn't cut his first teeth until six months.

Completely different timetables for my four. My oldest didn't even have one of her front teeth till she was over two. Some of the others started very early.

My youngest had something like 5 teeth come in in a single week when he was a little over a year old -- I'll never forget it as we were camping at the time and I couldn't put him down the entire week. :)

Best wishes,

My first two children began teeting around 6 or 6-1/2 months. My third child began teeting at 4 months. I was totally shocked. Since I was nursing, I wanted the teething to hold off for a little while.

Have you tried Hyland's teething tablets? They are homeopathic, very safe, and work in seconds. You can find them by doing a Google search. If she is teething the tablets might help you to know for sure.

Teething was different for each of my children. For my oldest ,though initial the drs didn't believe me, she was born with teeth poking through. Drs. later said that the "teeth" were not real and would fall out, but they never did until she shed her baby teeth. All of my other children got their baby teeth around the age of 3-5 months old, and had a full mouth full of teeth by the time they were a year old.

consequently, they also seemed to lose their teeth earlier than their same-age peers.

Hi Crystal,

My first son cut his firth tooth when my husband and I were away (with him) on our second anniversary! He was about 7 months. While nursing my second son I noticed I was a bit sore and upon looking into his mouth we discovered he had cut a tooth at 3 months! My daughter had several teeth when we adopted her - so I don't know when she started teething.

I was so encouraged to read the comments on early teethers. We always thought it was just our children.

We have 4 boys, and they all teethed at 4 months, the youngest being 7 months. We never get tired of seeing those pearly whites popping through on the bottom gum every time they laugh or smile! And being early teethers, they subsequently grew full mouths and lost teeth earlier than their peers as well.

Crystal...just rememebr to cherish this season, as strange as that may sound. Us as parents know all too well how quickly these seasons pass and how much we reflect back on them with joy.

Relish this season the Lord has bestowed upon you!

My little man started with the drooling at about six weeks, the extreme fussiness just after six months, and got the first tooth right at 8 months (with #2 following later that week). He's just cut tooth #3 (almost 10 months) with #4 clearly in the works.

It's been a long time since I've slept more than two hours at a time.

I think I'd be alright with baby #2 (whenever s/he comes) to be born with a mouthful.

My Mom said I got a tooth at 4 months old. Both of my children started drooling like crazy around 3 months and by the time they were 5 months, each had two teeth. It's very possible that Kaitlynn could be teething, but it's also just as possible that teeth may not show up for another month or that she is going through a moody time where she just wants extra attention from Mom. Maybe she is growing extra fast this week and needs more feedings.

My children loved chewing/sucking on a cold, wet waschcloth while they were first teething! I avoided the baby orajel type products because I've heard they can numb the mouth and make nursing difficult. It took about a month or more of constant drooling and crankiness until the first two teeth popped through, so it still might be awhile before Kaitlynn gets some, even if she is showing signs of teething right now. But, you never can tell. Maybe next week at this time she'll be sporting some pearly whites! :-)

Great question and interesting answers. I've been wondering if our four-and-a-half month old is teething. She's been super-drooly (which she never was before), gumming and looks like she's trying to chew things, and very clingy. She also seems to nurse more for comfort than nutrition, where she'll "snack" but not really eat but it's the only thing that will quiet her fussing. :) I thought it was rare to teeth so early!

Hi Crystal,

All 3 of mine got teeth somewhere around 7 months (can't remember EXACTLY), but began teething around the 4 month mark. It was definitely teething (fussy, chomp hard on things, excess drooling, etc.), but those teeth just wouldn't come through for a few months. I don't recall the fussiness being continuous for those 3 months, though. But it was definitely there off and on for months--and certainly more pronounced and steady just before they came in.

Try something cool in her mouth to see if she gets relief maybe? Wear her a lot? Check for irritating tags, diapers, rash, upset in routine, etc.? Could be other stuff. Mom knows best! If you're wondering if it's teething, it likely is!

Remember blessed mother of 2, that this, too, shall pass!

Blessings,
Jill J

Hi Crystal~None of my children started teething quite so young, but I do know a young woman with a daughter that started getting teeth at 4 months and has almost a complete set at just 1 year!
My eldest, didn't get her first tooth until 11months(and then watch out!) and my second started around 7-9months. Liam, my newest just got his first at 8 1/2 months old.
So, it is very possible she is teething. They don't all follow the same pattern.

I hope she will not have too tough of a time!

My son's been doing the same thing, as well as having messier diapers. I've read that the change in stools is actually a "wive's tale" and believed it with my daughter, as she had no changes - but this time around, I'm really wondering. He is also numming on his finger, fist, and binky in one certain spot, which makes me wonder even more. I haven't felt anything under the gum yet, but I'm waiting....

I have five children, ages 19, 13, 10, almost 2, and 4 1/2 months, and none of them have teethed quite the same.

My oldest cut her first teeth at three months. No crankiness, just out they came. Four teeth in two weeks.

My next didn't cut her first until she was about six months. Mild crankiness.

My third got hers around six to seven months with a lot of crankiness.

My fourth (the only boy) cut his first at 3 1/2 months and didn't stop until they were all in by his 1st birthday. It kept him from sleeping through the night for quite a while.

My youngest daughter has not cut any yet, but has been drooling and gnawing for several weeks. I'm expecting them any day now.

Every child is different. You know your child best, but don't be surprised if she is teething. I've even heard of some babies being born with teeth already cut!

My son had a point sticking out of his bottom gum at four months....and it took six weeks after that for it to fully come in, so it is really possible that Kaitlynn is teething. Both of my children have had at least two teeth by six months, while a friend of mine's children average more like 10-15 months! so there is a wide variance of what is normal. My Mom said that the four of us were all different from one to the next, her earliest getting a tooth at four months and the latest being about nine months.

Both of mine started teething at 3 months and had their first tooth at 4 months. Ds even cut his fourth, fifth and sixth teeth at the SAME TIME (VERY cranky baby!) at 6 months. One nice thing wiht having them cut them early is it is over with faster ;). Dd cut her second, third and fourth teeth all at one time too. They are taking after me since I teethed early and I think my dh did too. Ds recently lost his first tooth (at age 6) and had the new one come in behind it (the one next to it is doing the same thing) I had the same thing happen to me so he is getting that from me too! From talking to a dentist friend of mine, when they get their first teeth is hereditary along wit the shape of their teeth (yes, some of us have oddly shaped teeth and some of us even have extra molars and still have our wisdom teeth in our mouths! Yep, that would me odd shaped teeth, extra molars and my wisdom teeth...isn't it great how God makes all different!)

Both of the daughters I birthed had their teeth break through at 4 months. My now 9 month old started drooling at 6 weeks (we thought she might have had low muscle tone in her mouth but it turns out that it was the beginning of the teething process).

The babies I did not birth were closer to a year old (which I had hoped and prayed the ones I was nursing would have done the same, but nope only my bottle fed ones waited).

I much prefer for the babies to be older when getting their teeth because they seem to handle it better, etc. But, alas, I have no say in the matter. I can only request. 80)

I hope you and your little sweety don't get too tired out from the teething games. 80)

My daughter was fussy just when she was turning 3 months and was also due for a doctor's appointment. I couldn't get my reg ped and had to see another one. I asked (she was my first) if it was possible she was teething and he said no way, that it was because she was turning three months and I needed to suppliment her with formula and solids (I breast feed) he then had the nurse bring in a huge tray of formula. Being a new Mom I gave her the formula andsome applesauce and she stayed up all night screaming from a belly ache and threw it all up. She popped through a tooth the very next day and the next one the same week. I don't listen to doctors when my Mother's sense is telling me something different anymore. I pray and I go to a ped I trust.

In my kids, teething is manifests as sleeping problems (can't stay asleep) and fussy all day. In my toddler she will even seem to be misbehaving alot (by the way, my first daughter had all her teeth AND 5 molars by her first birthday...so Don't listen to doctors who say there is no way they could be teething this early).

When in doubt, I give a little tylenol or motrin and see if it helps. I watch for behaviors like unending nursing (which could also be fighting sickness or a growth spurt), runny stools, rashes around the mouth, lots of drooling and my older daughter demands ice to suck on.

Good luck.
