And a new week commences...

As some of you know, I've been a bit under the weather the last two days. Gratefully, I'm on the mend and ready to hit the ground running tomorrow morning.

And it's a good thing because one of the things Jesse and I accomplished while I was laid up in bed sick was finally putting together a master family schedule - something we've been meaning to do ever since he started working from home full-time. The schedule is now finished, printed, and in plastic page protectors up on our refrigerator...

I'm just hoping we can actually follow it and not just have good intentions as I'm very prone to do.

Another thing we accomplished (thanks to Jesse's help!), was getting my current reading added to the sidebar. Be sure to check it out along with the section on "Home Education at Our House." I always enjoy seeing things like these on others' blogs, so I thought some of you might enjoy these features on my blog as well. If anything, it can serve to keep me accountable to actual finish reading the books I started!

In other bloggy news, I'll be posting the final trip recap sometime in the next day or two and then I'll begin tackling all the fun and in-depth questions left on this post. It looks like I won't lack for blog fodder this week, that's for sure!

Crystal, just a suggestion for you... I started making spreadsheet schedules when my 2nd child was born. My suggestion to you is whenever you create a new schedule, keep the old one in a folder. My schedule now includes 7 children, and it is neat sometimes to take a look at the schedules we followed when there were just 2 children in our family. It is a little walk down memory lane! :-)

I see you are reading Dancing under the Red star! Finish that one! I posted a review of it awhile back when I read it as it was so good and was shocked to get a lengthy comment from the author. It is a excellent book!

Congrats on being so organized! I've never been able to follow any "to-do" list, especially with my daughter around...she would rather play with mom!

How is the book "The Infidel?" I've been cuirous about it.

I'm in the process of making a schedule for my family. I have the older three kids scheduled and now have to do the youngest and myself. Like you I'll have to really work to stay on it so it doesn't become just good intentions.

Hi Crystal,
Just a question; does Jesse help out with any household chores? I notice he helps with bathing the girls and putting them to bed (which is awesome!), but I was just wondering if he helped out with other household chores as well.

I know he's busy with his law firm, but I know that raising two little girls (as you do) is a full time job as well, so I was just curious if he helped you out with the housework. Thanks!

P.S. Congrats for getting so organized! It sounds like my husband and I need to do something like that!

I have found some success with the index card method. However, any schedule I make tends to get shifted A LOT! It seems there are always unexpected things that come up to take up time, kid's illnesses, neighbors, projects for church, things for my hubby, etc. Your schedule is great, but is so regimented that you may find yourself flexing it a lot depending on need. And that's okay!

P.S. I was wondering if you and Jesse do anything with church or to help out at church? I haven't seen that in your schedule or heard it mentioned before.

I love schedules and couldn't do without them! Thanks for sharing this, I have been very curious how to work in business time, how other women fit it in during the day etc.

I forgot to add: You guys seem to need very little sleep! I can stay up late and get up early too, but you guys get less sleep than I do! Do you always feel like a zombie from going to bed late and getting up at 5 a.m.?

One more question: Do you enjoy having your husband home all day? I find that I get way less done when my husband is home on the weekends. Also, after a few days at home, he starts to get bored and restless. How do things work for you when you are both at home all day long? Does he go in a separate room so the girls can't interrupt his work too much?

Crystal - Do you have this schedule format (a blank version, of course) available? If so, could you post a link to it or something? I'd love to create a schedule like this for our family.

I just wanted to say WOW! I'm impressed! No wonder you are so productive and successful.

I think it is so cool that Jesse works from home too. How awesome!

I can't believe how much Kaitlynn sleeps! And on a schedule, too! I'm lucky if I get an hour nap in the morning and a two hour nap in the afternoon with my five month old. How do you schedule or plan your nursing and naps? I find nursing is so unpredictable there's no way I could put it down on paper when and for how long. I'm also curious what "to bed" means. Does Kaitlynn fall asleep easily when you put her down?

I found it encouraging to peek at your daily schedule because know I now how you get so much done! :-) I can't believe how much Katilynn sleeps (or "goes to bed) and how early both girls go to bed at night and and how early you and Jesse rise in the morning. My littlest one is nine months and still is unpredictable when it comes to nursing and is down to taking two short naps a day, plus getting more and more mobile so I guess that's why I never feel caught up!

By the way, this schedule is just an ideal of how a perfect day would look at our house. We've never had a perfect day yet and I don't think we're going to. However, I've found that writing a plan down means I am much more productive than if I just try to wing it. I'm learning to be flexible and go with the flow when interruptions arise or when - as often happens - both girls decide to not sleep at all all day long and then are up multiple times per night. That's life. :) And as a mom, you learn to roll with the punches.

Hi Crystal,
I came back specially to see if anyone else would commment on just how much your children (your eldest little girl in particular) sleeps!! I was amazed. It also struck me how LITTLE sleep you and your husband need. You certainly are very organized, congratulations!

Sandra: I'm blessed to be a person who doesn't require a ton of sleep. I guess I just wish I didn't ever have to sleep because I have so many other things I want to be doing than sleeping!!

I've found I do very well on seven hours of sleep. I can normally do just fine on 5-6 as long as they are solid hours and not all broken up. When I'm pregnant, I usually get at least 8-9, but otherwise, seven is great. Plus, we almost always sleep in on the weekends or I take a nap on Sunday afternoons.

Kathrynne is normally a pretty good sleeper - which I am very blessed with! She normally sleeps at least 10 hours at night plus an afternoon nap/quiet time. Now, there are certainly those nights and days when she decides she's not tired at all, but for the most part, she's a good sleeper. :)

Oh and like I said earlier, this is what our schedule would look like if we had a perfect day. Having a schedule helps me be much more productive and get more things done and also means there is much more order in our home. However, we never follow it perfectly - it's our guide, not our taskmaster!
