Like mother, like daughter
A few months ago when we were out on a family restaurant date, we ate this delectable chocolate tortilla chip dessert (fried chocolate tortilla wedges served with strawberries, chocolate syrup, and ice cream). I thought I'd found the perfect recipe to recreate it at home and was so excited to try it out tonight.
My high hopes were quickly dashed as these supposed "chocolate tortillas" turned out like sad-looking chocolate pancakes. I loaded them with bananas, chocolate syrup, strawberry syrup, and powdered sugar and Jesse said they were really good. But they weren't anything like that restaurant dessert.
I was holding Kaitlynn on my hip while I finished mixing up the batter. When I popped the beaters out of the mixer to hand them to Kathrynne to lick off, Kaitlynn grabbed them out of my hand and immediately tried to stick them in her mouth:
I guess it's no surprise we have another girl who likes chocolate!
As an aside, anyone know of a good recipe for chocolate tortillas which actually turn out like tortillas and not flattened brownies?

Your big-eyed, chocolate-smeared daughter is adorable!
She's a dolly!
AWE!!!!!!!!
And those BIG BLUE EYES!!!!
How precious is THAT!
Starting early on the chocolate.. hehe
What beautiful eyes she has!!! It seems like just yesterday, we were reading about your having her, it seems so hard to believe she's already that big!!! :)
Christy
What a beauty! Love those eyes!
What a sweetheart! I can't believe how big and blue her eyes are! My daughter crawls into the kitchen whenever she hears the electric mixer going and opens her mouth like a little bird, just waiting for a beater to lick! She's a couple months older than Kaitlynn.
Have you looked on allrecipes.com for a chocolate tortilla recipes? I like that site because you can usually find most recipes and then read reviews from people that tried it.
How funny!
Her eyes are so pretty; just like Kathrynne. :)
I was going to say the same thing as Christy: Didn't you JUST have her?!?! :)
Crystal-I don't have a recipe like that and I have only seen your husband in a few pictures but she looks just like him! Does everyone say that?
It's sad to have the chocolate problem so early!! I'm sure mine started about that time, too! :)
Kelli
She's so cute!!! :) I've never heard of chocolate tortillas, so if you figure it out you'll have to post the recipe! :) YUM!
I hate to mimic all the other commenters, but... gosh, those eyes!
Chocolate tortillas? I'll check my Southern Living Cookbook (it's my fave). Most recipes that include chocolate are already in my repetoire. :-)
But, do keep us posted on the search for the perfect choco-torta.
Blessings!
Crystal,
The Mexican cooks that I've worked with would probably suggest that you start out with your own simple tortilla batter and then grill your tortillas in hot oil, then slice them in wedges, then fry them as crispy chips... it sounds like maybe that's what you were going for? Or, you could look up a recipe for homemade *puffy* (not crispy) taco shells, since that would probably get closer to the results that you want.
Growing up in San Antonio, my mother made sure that I had lots of Mexican cooking classes :)
Yes, MM - that's what I was shooting for. But the tortilla batter turned out more like pancake batter so the refrying thing didn't work. Oh well! You live and learn!
We had a similar experience yesterday with our five month old, except it was during lunch and with apples and peanut butter! My husband had her on his lap and turned his head to get her burp cloth off the swing. In that instant her hand went directly into the scoop of peanut butter on his plate. Squishy! I had to grab her and run to get a wet wipe before the hand went into her mouth and all over his shirt.
It was only by chance it was peanut butter and not chocolate, since I made chocolate cake yesterday.
You've mentioned having a strong sweet tooth. I do, too, and I struggle daily not to give in to it. How do you do it? I've tried allowing small indulgences rather than a complete fast, but I find the chocolate glutton in me rising and overpowering more often than I'd like to admit. How do you tame your cravings to be satisfied?
... were you using real masa for the batter? I'm so perplexed about this for you.
she is getting so big! so sweet!
Crystal: I'm familiar with the dessert you were describing. I've been unable to duplicate it EXACTLY at home, but have been able to come pretty close by simply frying ready made tortillas in hot oil, then dusting them in either cinnamon and sugar or powdered sugar while they were still hot. The grease makes the sugar stick! :) Not exactly healthy, but very delicious. Then I put it with icecream and sometimes fruit like strawberries. It's good with chocolate syrup or warm honey drizzled on top.
Another delicious thing to do is to crush/break the fried tortillas into small pieces, then take a large (firmly packed) scoop of vanilla ice cream and roll it in the tortilla pieces. You then put that in a bowl, top with whipped cream and honey, and you have another scrumptious dessert.
I've never made chocolate tortillas, but plain tortillas when used as described above are just as good.
Crystal... so I read over your recipe. The authors must not be Texans, that's the problem... they had you making chocolate crepes, not tortillas! ;)
You need to use masa, not flour. I like anonymous' suggestion re frying prepared tortillas. But, I do think you would get an incredibly yummy result by making your own masa batter and following a puffy taco shell recipe.
Also, if I were you... I would stir some cayenne pepper into the chocolate sauce for a very authentic treat.
When I have made tortillas they are a really, stiff dough and not sweet at all, so I would probably take a flour tortilla recipe and add some cocoa powder to it and then dust them with powdered sugar. You would have to make the tortillas first, rolling them out thin and then frying them and then deep frying them to make them crispy and dust with powdered sugar. This is what I would do if I was trying this.
Here is one that sounds imilar to what I did before

Oh,chocolate tortillas, yummy! I adore chocolate. Your little one is beautiful, so adorable. Her eyes are stunning, bet you are so proud of your 2 lovley girls.
Take Care and God Bless.
That is SUCH a precious picture. Those big blue eyes are simply...precious!
Oh, I have to laugh because I just read the rest of these comments and everyone is commenting on her eyes! Well, what can I say... she's a doll, and it's entirely understandable that we ladies coo over that! :)
Dear Crystal,
A chocolaty face and big blue eyes look VERY cute. Oh so sweet
This is such a cute picture of Kaitlynn. What a darling. I wish I could help you with the recipe, but I don't know one :)
I can't believe how Kaitlynn is getting.Sorry I can't help with the recipe.
To cute!!
She has such big blue eyes.

Crystal: the recipe you used looks just like my crepe recipe--NOT tortillas!
How cute!!! What beautiful, beautiful eyes she has too!!!!
I don't know anything about chocolate tortillas, but I do know that when I have made my handmand tortillas from scratch from masa, they were wonderful! Like MM said, that's how to made a "real" tortilla. (A little time consuming however. But they really are good!)
The dessert concept sounds delish though!
To make fried "tortillas" you need to use a recipe for bunuelos, which are fried sweet puffs not tortillas. They are a little involved to make yet simple. My teenage son makes then easily. I will email the recipe since it is long. Lisa
That sounds delicious!! If you find out how to make them, could you post the recipe here????
