Day 6 of the Challenge

We had a late start this morning since I was up every 30-45 minutes last night with Kaitlynn who is miserably teething. Poor thing - she has just about every teething symptom in the book: Fever, runny nose, cough, swollen gums, loose stools, drooling, trying to chew on everything... She especially has trouble getting any sleep and we've tried every remedy we know of so far and nothing is giving her much relief aside from mommy holding her and rocking her. If you have any thoughts or ideas for us, I'd welcome them - I'm sure there's something we've not thought of yet!

Instead of following our usual schedule, I decided to just stick with a simplified version of it, leaving out specified times so that we had room for more flexibility:

-Devotions
-Morning routine
-Morning chores
-Make dinner
-Lunch
-Girls down for naps
-Business and computer work
-Clean up and table set
-Dinner
-Family time
-Girls to bed
-Blogging

Going into the day with low expectations really helped since I knew that Kaitlynn was probably going to need lots of extra loving and attention - which she did.

For our morning chores, we tackled the kitchen. For the sake of full disclosure and being real, here's the before picture - yes, we live here!

Don't ask me what the hair brush or the clothes hanger are doing on the kitchen table! I'm not even sure where they came from. And you can also get a peek at my pink laptop!

While I cleaned up the kitchen, Kathrynne busied herself with having a little tea party on the floor.

She's wearing her Extend-a-Bib from Seams of Love which I just love and she does, too. She thinks it's pretty and I think it's not only pretty, it's practical as it means less clothes she stains which equals fewer need for changing her clothes with the end result of less laundry.

I washed the dishes and dried and put them away, wiped down the countertops and cabinet doors with Basic H, put everything away that was out of place (like the hair brush and hanger!), and swept and mopped the floor.

Ah, much nicer! (And please don't pay any attention to the fact that this is actually a picture I took and posted a few days ago. I promise I did get the kitchen looking like this again today, I just didn't have a chance to get a picture. So we'll just pretend this one is the "after" picture!)

Once the kitchen was clean, we made a really simple dinner of homemade bread (I made the dough in the bread machine of course!), green beans, and homemade macaroni and cheese. Yum!

And I just couldn't resist posting this picture which was taken on Thanksgiving and never got posted here. It makes me miss my happy contented little girl. I sure hope those teeth pop through soon!

Hope you get some sleep tonight and that Kaitlynn is done teething tomorrow! Motrin always worked better than Tylenol for our kids and washcloth popsicles (wet washcloths rolled into taquitos and frozen). I don't have any really great tips since my kids didn't have all the teething symptoms and we could never figure out if they were teething or not sometimes.

Your "before" picture this time looks very realistic, at least realistic by how mine looks when it's in need of my attention (which is daily).
It's amazing Kathrynne doesn't break the fancy china!

Beautiful baby! And what a transformed kitchen. I know I'm inspired. I hope your little one feels better soon.

For the teething try Hyland's Teething tabs, they worked wonders for my dd. I found them at Giant Eagle here in OH in the organic vitamin and health beauty section of the store. They were one of the few things I found that worked for her.
I will be working on something I have been putting off this week today, my holiday baking!

Just a thought, do you think maybe Kaitlynn has an ear infection? Whenever mine have a runny nose and are cranky, it was usually their ears.

Thanks so much for your home challenge! I know it's been difficult for you to keep going with everything that's been happening!

I'm sorry Kaitlyn is teething! I know you're both miserable. You've probably tried this, but I thought I'd mention it just in case. This is the only thing that helped my daughter with teething. If she will take a pacifer, put it in the freezer for a few minutes (10 or 15 is good) and give it to her. For some reason, the cold must feel good on their gums. It would calm my daughter down enough that she'd usually go to sleep. I have heard that you're not supposed to do this (not sure why), but this is the only thing that helped my daughter at all with teething.
I hope both of you feel better soon!

Hi Crystal,
I said a prayer for you this morning. I hope that Kaitlynn's teeth come through soon--for her sake and the sake of her poor, sleep-deprived mommy!
I am sorry, but don't seem to have much advice. I remember giving my kids cold teething rings and my fingers and the cold ends of carrots (the part that was too thick to bite off) to chew on, but other than that, their teeth came in without much fuss (very late, though--around 10 mos).
It always helps me to remember Psalm 61 (I think): "Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I". He's always there, isn't He? Stronger and higher for us to reach up to for strength... Phebe

Crystal,
There's a brand called Hyland's and it's homeopathic. I used this for my dc. You can rub it on their gums, and it's not bad for them. Hope you get some relief, but she sure did look cute in her picture.

Hello Crystal,

You have my sympathy and prayers for you and Kaitlynn. My Emma was the same way when she teethed...fever, runny/stuffy nose...diarhea...waking up during the night. It was exhausting! But when they get to that point, the only thing you can do for them is a little bit of childrens Tylenol (for the pain) and lots of cuddling.

When my son was teething, which was also so hard on him too, my grandma suggested catnip tea(I watered it down slightly.)with a small of suger because honey is not recommended to children under one year old. It didn't smell or taste too great but it did help him rest.
I also used crushed ice in a washcloth with a ribbon tied around it, he loved to chew on that.

My doctor doesn't recommend giving Mortin for children under two, so we gave him Tylenol.

A friend of mine suggested the teething tablets, (that mom of 2 suggested), she said they worked terrific but I could not find them.

Sorry I don't have any other tips.

My daughter is almost a year old and started teething at 5 months. She now has eight teeth and is getting more. She loves to chew on wet washcloths and popsicles. Hope you get some sleep!

I love your extend-a-bib! I am currently in the process of sewing several aprons for my son to cover him during mealtimes. It's fun coming up with "manly" prints and patterns!

When my son is teething and miserable, nothing really helps him. All I've found I can do is just let everything else go and spend as much time with him as possible. It looks like you've already figured that out! Good luck!

I ditto the sentiments on the Hyland's teething tablets. Get them at any natural food store (acctually Walmart has them too) and they dissolve right on contact. They work wonders.

I always used tylenol and frozen washcloths. Also, buy some popsicles or those frozen icees that come in the plastic sheaths and have her chew on those (with you holding the icee of course). If she isn't better really soon maybe she has something more like an ear infection.

For my kids the Hylands teething tablets worked really well. But I have heard others say they didn't do a thing for their kids. I definately think you have to follow the instructions and give them to them every 15 to 20 min. at first. I hope you see some teeth soon!
Oh and thanks for the mention of the cleaner in this mornings post! Basic H!! I will be getting that this pay day.
May God bless your day with some rest and a peaceful child.

I hope Kaitlynn feels better soon! Those teeth are no fun! My 8-month-old has been cutting her top 2 teeth for what seems like forever. We really like the Hylands' Teething Tablets, too! They're homeopathic, so I don't feel bad giving them to her like I do when I give her Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

Oh Miss Crystal, your kitchen is clean even when it's messy, LOL! :o) Compared to mine, wow! I'm loving this challenge and hope to share some pictures tonight.

P.S. What an adorable photo of your Kaitlynn on Thanksgiving!!
