Help a girl out here, won't you?
My husband doesn't have internet access today so he can't get on my blog. Because of this, I knew I had to quick get on here and ask for your input:
What should I buy my hubby for Christmas?
We have a budget of $50 for each other. He knows my usual aptitude for finding great deals and stretching $50 a long way so I'm sure he's counting on me to come up with something really great. But I am completely waffling on this one...
I could get him clothes. He needs dress shirts and ties and it's a very practical gift. But it's also boring and I really don't feel like doing something so bland and normal.
He likes books and I have his book wish list on my computer so I could just buy off of there. But that also seems very unoriginal. I mean, I seem to always get him books or ties or shirts.
He really wants a GPS system, but that's a wee bit over the $50 budget. I am seriously considering just using some extra money I have from some freelance projects I've done this year and surprising him with it. But I also don't have a clue about electronics like this so I might very well end up with the wrong kind or something like that.
What would you do? Would you stick to the budget and get some old standby gifts, or would you forget about the budget and surprise him with the GPS?
By the way, what are you buying for your husband? Any other brilliant ideas for me? Any suggestions on what kind of GPS I should get if I were to go that route? And anyone know where I could get a good price on one?

The GPS is an awesome idea. How about checking ebay? My husband is military and he always buys his own GPS (yes, the ones you can buy are better than the ones they give them) and when he upgrades, he sells them on ebay. LOL . . . I could have given you a good deal a few months back.
Having a GPS opens up a really fun family hobby that we do called "geocaching." Check out the link here: http://www.geocaching.com/
So, if you do not mind getting him something used, check ebay or local resale stores and I'm sure you can find him a GPS for $50 or less.
I think he would have a lot of fun with it and the girls would have a blast with geocaching. :)
Hiya Crystal -
My vote is for the GPS. He DID get you that Ipod last year when he wasn't supposed to....now it is your turn to surprise him!
Not sure about electronic stores in your area, but you might try www.bestbuy.com, amazon.com, and circuitcity.com
Good luck!
I bought a nice watch and had it engraved with a special message.
Oh, and the Garmin E-Trex is a good starter GPS for outdoorsey activities. That was my husband's first GPS and he loved it. They are about $100 new, but I really think you could find a good one used.
LOL . . . my husband is a gadget guy too . . . so I'm a fan of gadget gifts. I got him ski lessons last year since he has always wanted to do that as well.
Hey Crystal! I hope you can surprise him! I don't know much about electronics, but target.com has a GPS called iFINDER for $79.99 - that wouldn't be too much over budget, but I don't know the quality. Best Buy is also having a sale on GPS.
I'm getting my husband some bike pedals with straps so you can also pedal when you lift your foot - he rides to work every day.
Good luck - I'm sure he'll love what you find!
Crystal,
I had no proble logging on to either site
I have no idea about GPS's, but I did see that Cabela's has some on sale this week, I'm pretty sure that you can shop online with them. Having been blessed with a great sense of direction, I never understood the need for a GPS. :)
I'm getting my DH the complete collection of Calvin and Hobbes. I found a steal on Amazon for under $40! I was thrilled. I'm also giving him a Chanticleer cd since he's been raving about their sound on NPR.
A GPS is a great idea. I almost bought that for my husband for Christmas during the black Friday sales. (We're moving to Australia next summer, and we're told it won't work there.) I'd recommend spending the extra and getting it for her. My brother has a Garmin and really likes it.
Test Comment!
This year I will take a ring my husband bought before I met him when his son was born. It's the Keepsake Personalized Treasures Men's Ring at Walmart. I have 3 other children's names to put on it. I need to see how much they will charge though. The ring itself is expensive. I am wonderign if I can find something cheaper and just get all the names at once on something else if this deems to expensive. Very personal though. I guess if there was an agreement on $50 then I would personally stick to it. I am sure with your ideas you can come up with a very personal, and heartfelt gift to give your dh.

That is so funny! Before I scrolled down, the first thought that came to mind was GPS system!! Go for it! My husband gets clothes every year.. he loves them.
I would go for the GPS.
I have gotten dh tools that he requested for work and a few he didn't request but I know he needs but would not buy for himself (He would design it and attempt to make it instead then get upset when it broke).
I had no problems accessing either blog this afternoon.
I give you permission (ha!) to surprise with him a GPS.
Really, our husbands work so hard for our families, sacrificing SUVs and vacations so that we can stay at home--I truly feel that any splurging should be done on their behalf.
Besides, if you yard sale like I do, having a GPS unit will pay itself back in gas money : )
My mom and I were just discussing the GPS this morning. My dad and her are buying it for themselves for Christmas. My mom was wondering if there was a monthly subscription to the service or not? We do not exchange gifts with each other, but my birthday is Dec 19 so I still get spoiled :) And his is in Feb, yeah for clearance!
Okay, my husband and I aren't buying anything for each other this year. Normally we spend a small amount on each other. I did ask the other night if he was being honest and wasn't going to surprise me. He said he wanted to but, no, he wouldn't. That made me feel much better. That being said, if I had the money and I knew of something he'd really like, I'd love to surprise him. I say go for it!! I know my husband works very hard for us and I really appreicate it. While I know it isn't about proving that to him, I love opportunities to let him know I still pay attention to his wants -- not just needs. Let us know what you decide.
Crystal - Hi this is Jamie from IL! I have commented before (not very often) but I have a brand new GPS for sale that you may be interested in. I will email you with the details!
The GPS would knock his socks off! If you have the extra money...I would do it. But if not go with what you know....the books. My husband and I are not doing Christmas presents this year. Well...we tease and say the insurance deductible we are saving up for (baby due in April) is our gift. And really what a wonderful gift from God!! But my husbands birthday is three days after Christmas. I got him this.. http://www.thewordofpromise.com/wp1/ We already have the Bible on cd. And he loves to listen when he is working or in his truck. I think he will really enjoy this dramatic presentation of the new Testament. Maybe Jesse would to?
I have a horrible time knowing what to get my husband as well. It either, like you said, seems boring (clothes and books, I always get those as well!) or it's to expensive!
But, if you had some extra cash set aside, it would be awfully fun to surprise him with the GPS. But I am afraid I can't be any help with knowing what the good ones are.
Can you look it up on consumer reports? Sometimes we go to the library and look at their copies for an item we are in the market for. :-)
Good luck!
There are some interesting books out there including 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die by Peter Ackroyd, I Am America (And So Can You!) by Stephen Colbert and If Democrats Had Any Brains, They'd Be Republicans by Ann Coulter.
I am getting my hubby a new watch and, if the budget allows, an engraving on the back.
If you want him to be really excited about his gift I would try to avoid clothes. Men don't seem too excited about them.
GPS all the way! My husband's is a Magellan.
I would ditch practicality and surprise the socks off him :0)
DH and I are not buying for each other this year. We are going home to NH for Christmas for the first time in NINE years - that is our Christmas present this year. There isn't anything I really want anyway.
Merry Christmas and let us know what you decide
I recommend the GPS. Actually, we just bought one this week using Christmas money we get from our families each year. We got the TomTom ONE Third Edition. They are on sale this week for $149.99 at Radio Shack & Staples. I think Amazon.com has them for this price, too. We recently moved to another state, so the GPS has been a life saver.
I say buy him what he wants even if you have to dip into another surplus. It is worth it to make him happy and grant his Christmas wish.
Personally I would go for the GPS since you know he really wants one. My man also wanted something very gadgety and I got him that (although it was rather cheap and we had no fixed a budget!) I'd rather get him something he really enjoy... but then, I also LOVE practical gifts. But you could get those for him any time you feel you want to spoil him a bit (I do that sometimes, just to surprise him).
Well, this isn't exciting idea, but I bought my husband a video that he wants and this popcorn popper. We make our popcorn from scratch all the time, and I'm exciting about trying out this pan when he and I hang out in the evening after our girls go to bed. :)
Punkin' Press Blog
I would go with the GPS. I love surprising my husband with a little extra, I don't think there is anything wrong with it! :)
I have some family members who go geocaching and it seems like so much fun.
The things I'll be getting my husband range from CD's, to clothes and video games. with a few special surprises thrown in there. We do the used thing on some items- then I can get him more stuff!
Get him the GPS!
Your husband works so hard for your family and probably doesn't ask for much. Think of all the men his age just free-wheeling around with motorcycles and big trucks and the latest everything. This is by no means something to aspire to, my point is simply that he's going against the flow in so many areas of his life, it would be so nice to indulge him at Christmas! You can buy clothes and whatever at any time just picking something up here and there, but you'd never just pick him up a GPS. I say go for it!
I think if your husband and you agreed you would not go over budget - the best gift you could give your husband, would be to honor that agreement. Men much prefer honor to gifts.
My husband and I are technically not exchanging gifts, but he told me the other day that he was saving up for something for me when I asked if he wanted to get something for my daughter or do one gift from both of us. I finally got it out of him that he had a spa day planned - which I put the kibosh on when I reminded him of the spa certificates I got from Walgreens (thanks to YOUR post, Crystal!). I suspect he may still try to sneak something past me as he asked what size I'd be while I was looking at workout clothes one day. So I am quietly trying to get ideas myself.
On the one hand I want to say splurge and get the GPS for Jesse - I've heard great things about Garmin, that's what my husband always looks at and he's a land nav addict - but on the other hand I think you could find some lovely books - or even some DVDs - for him for well under the $50 limit.
I say flip a coin! ;-)
I would go with the GPS. My husband has had his Garmin for 3 years and loves it. You can get a nice one for a very reasonable price. We have the Garmin c330 which is 125.00 on Amazon with Free shipping. It is an excellent GPS and its not a lot over your 50.00 budget. http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-StreetPilot-3-5-Inch-Navigator-Factory-Refurbished/dp/B000EM2OXA/ref=br_lf_m_1000179221_1_13_ttl?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=electronics&pf_rd_p=339574601&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_i=1000179221&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0RX6J6E94GKBN8C4YT66
Well, I'd have to say I'd probably surprise him with the GPS :-)
My dad just bought one for my brother, so I'll have to ask him if he knows where to get a good deal.
You can get a GPS for a great price these days. I gave my DH a TomTom One last Christmas. It's been great.
My opinion...
surprise him...
look at consumer reports (If you don't have a subscription, I will look it up for you and give you the info...just let me know)
shop EBAY first...
I whole heartedly agree with Meredith! Go ahead and splurge on your very deserving husband, so long as you don't go without food, or heat:)
Have a Merry Christmas!
Trixie
Go for the GPS! That will be a terrific surprise. You may want to comparison shop at mysimon.com to find the best deal. Just keep in mind that with most GPS devices you will also have to pay a subscription service.
My hubby and I don't exchange Christmas gifts, actually. We both have large families to shop for on a tight budget, plus we like to surprise one another during the year with little gifts, so skipping gifts makes the most sense for us!
Hmmm, a tough one... I'd go for the GPS, I think, just because it would be a wonderful surprise! I'm like you, though... no clue about electronics! How about purchasing a Visa gift-card that he could use anywhere, even online? (I believe you can get these at most banks.) Then he could purchase whatever he wanted and could have fun picking it out, as well!
~Kristy
My husband recently got a GPS because he travels almost every day for work. He got one made by Garmin. A feature that not all models have that he really likes (I believe it's called "text to speech") is that it will say the directions out loud to you which is very nice when you're the only one in the car. (So you don't keep looking at the screen while you're trying to drive.)
He got his on sale for around $260 which is way more than the budget you mentioned, but I thought the info about that feature might come in handy. Maybe not, though. :) Best wishes as you decide what to get him! :)
Be sure and blog back and let us all know what you decide :) Before he gets online!
Crystal,
One of the best gifts i bought my hubby was a good quality wallet with his initials engravved on the front. And a couple of noteds in it. he still has it almost 7 years later. And it looks almost brand new. Although hwe said a big tip was jot to put coins in it and then it will last longer. Good on you edibleeducation for saying to remember to honour your husband and stay within the budget. If he wants to spend more on her then thats up to him. He is the head of the house. And this may be the year that keepinto the budget is crucial. Anyway, thats my two cents,
Meg
If you do decide to go with the GPS, here are some helpful reviews:
http://www.consumersearch.com/www/
electronics/gps/index.html
http://www.consumersearch.com/www/
automotive/auto-gps/
Since the links were so long, just copy and paste the two parts together. This website is great for reviews of pretty much anything.
Just a thought but GPS does give the potential for you to be tracked. Prob not an issue now but should there ever be persecution, you might be better map reading!
I've buying dh some fruit trees for our garden. Our plan is to plant ours but it is possible to buy small trees in pots that you can move if you relocate.

I'm voting for the GPS, too. I have a Garmin that we got on eBay. It has really helped me get to know this town!
Plus, when traveling, it's awesome that we can click a button and find out where all of the gas stations and restaurants are.
Get one that will say the street names, if you can. There are ones that just say "turn left" but it's much easier to stay on track if it says "turn left on Maple Street."
I vote for the GPS system. He'll love it, it's practical if you travel a lot, and it will surprise him. It's been a hard year for you guys and it might be fun to bless him a little extra. Besides, you can find quality GPS systems for around $100.00. There are a ton on sale right now. We have a Garmin and it works well for us. We bought it new on ebay. There are tons of them for sale on E-bay used and new. When you see one you like, do a quick search on the reviews of it before the bid is over. :) Hope that helps!!
The GPS is a great idea! I honestly don't know what to get my hubby. We have had to go through so much since someone hit our van on December 1st. It is difficult to even remember that Christmas is coming up, sometimes. Blessings!
GPS all the way :) I mean, if you were always frivolous, then no, but it sounds like you're pretty practical and careful with your money etc. I'd get him the GPS.
p.s. If you would be dipping into normal funds for this, like skimping on your groceries or going into debt, then no. But I don't think it is agreement/budget-dishonoring to use the extra money. I think that personal sacrifice would mean a lot to him. I don't think he'd mind that, but you know him better than we do! Of course, if he did surprise you that way, chances are he wouldn't mind the turnabout at all :)
P.S. What model you get depends on what you features you/he wants...my dad has a air/land/water version, since he has his private pilot's license. To be sure you choose what he's eying, maybe a shopping trip together is in order, and giving him no room for excuses that "it's not really needed". :-)
I'd vote for the GPS, as long as you're not spending extra money from some other section of the household budget, and it's truly your "fun money". Plus, maybe you could get a used one within the $50 budget! I'm sure he'd appreciate your thoughtfulness at surprising him.
Crystal,
I bought my dh one of these:
http://www.buygpsnow.com/GlobalSat-GV370-Personal-Navigational-Device__798.aspx
I got it for $98 after Thx but it is a little more now. Fed ex shipping was about $15. Here is a Review on it is:
http://www.gpsgazette.com/category/automotive-gps/page/2/
Retail is 359.95. You can get it for about $129, now.
It has all kinds of stuff including MP3 player, 2 gigs and photoviewer. He is totally not expecting this so I am excited! You can email me at anoble1@juno.com if you have any more questions.

Crystal,
We bought a Garmin GPS. We found a great bargain on it from QVC. We love it and it has helped when we have traveled, however, we do not use it everyday.
I am buying my husband something that he would not imagine me buying for him in a million years. He is a police officer and needs a new shotgun. The ones furnished by his department are older and he has found the one he loves. Our oldest took me to the store and showed me the one he was wanting. My boys have assured me that he would be so surprised if I buy this for him. He has been saving to buy it for himself. My husband constantly sacrifices for his family and I can't wait for Christmas morning for him to open it!
Blessings,
Vickie
This is a great idea!
I'm doing a "Book of the Month Club" for my hubby. He loves to read and is out of reading material lately. I've purchased 8 books and will give gift certificates for the other four so he can pick out books he wants.
I used all of our coins in the house and earned an extra $10 - so $40 in all from Amazon just from coins so this hasn't been too expensive.
Crystal,
I vote for the GPS! :) We have a Garmin.
Carla
I was looking into getting the Planet Earth series for my husband (he listed that as something he might like to have). I found them for $55 on amazon, which is a great deal (marked down from $80)!
Just an idea :)

I just got a GPS for my 18th birthday yesterday (my birthday isn't until tomorrow). My Grandma and aunts got it for me! Mine is a Garmin, and my dad looked it up on consumer reports and it has really good reviews. We went out for icecream last night following its directions...pretty cool!

Totally get him the GPS!! GO for it! We cannot and should not be so practical all of our life. He not only deserves it, it'll be a huge suprise! GO FOR IT!!! !
I'd say go for the GPS, if you have the extra money. My husband bought himself one when he had a second job with one of those geek squad companies. It helped him get to all his clients' homes. He doesn't have that job anymore but he still loves his GPS! His is a Tomtom.
I'd go for the GPS if I were you! Since hubby's are extremely hard to buy for, if this what he wants, I'm sure you can make it happen as he makes all those wonderful surprises for you happen.
My poor hubby usually gets a pair of Carhardt work pants for Christmas, t-shirt and socks, Reese's candy, and winter gloves. Oh, and a CD or two since he's really into music. It's always the same stuff every year! However, recently he commented to me that the best Christmas gift he's ever received from me was when I gave him a coupon book. I had coupons for:
A Kiss (never expires, redeemable up to a billion times)
A couple of ones for an hour-long back massage
His favorite meal
A date out with his wife
Having me do a job he dislikes
A big hug
A romantic picnic
Even though these things are things we do often anyway, he loved the fact that I showed my love for him in this way. If your hubby likes foot massages, having his hair brushed (mine does) or having some alone time where no one bugs him for a few hours, these are some other ideas for the coupons.
Have you checked eBay, Freecycle (www.freecycle.org), or Craigslist (www.craigslist.org) for a used GPS systems? Get him what he wants and the price you want!
I don't have a husband but I would want to be a blessing and get him that he really wanted for Christmas...(well your case..a GPS system)
Get the GPS! maybe since you aren't supposed to spend that much on him, it could be a gift from the girls? Check www.epinions.com for brands you are considering. If you are not familiar witht the site, people who own they product post reveiws, details, and ratings.
I get my hubby's dress shirts at Bergner's for under $10. Maybe you could add one from you.
For my husband, he wrote a list of things he would like, including batteries, the book The Late Great USA, anything by Alex Jones *he is very into politics), a DVD from Vision Forum, and the Backyard Ballistics book from them as well (I had coupons).
The best gift I got my hubby (in my opinion) was a card from Walgreen's. I uploaded pictures of kids, in-laws, and other people important to my hubby onto their photo site. They have a card that fits 12 pictures. The inside you can write as much or as little as you like. I worote him a short message and may have everyone sign it for him. It was $3.49 including s/h.
My husband likes experiences (eg. tickets to a performance) and homemade oatmeal raisin cookies. All other money spent on him is wasted... or so he says!
Blessings, e-Mom @ Chrysalis
Crystal,
I think a GPS system would be nice if you can find one in your price range. The only thing perhaps to think about is how does Jesse feel when you spend more than he spends on you? This may seem like a small thing to some, but I try to keep in the range my husband and I discuss as I don't want him to feel inadequate in any way if I were to spend more on him. We are on a tight budget also and I know my dh always wishes he could buy more for me. In the end, since you know Jesse best, only you would know how important it would be for you to stay in the $50 range you decided upon.
I am giving my dh a few gifts I bought but I am also going to give him coupons for things that would make his day - his favorite meal, etc. I think coupons like this are great because they really show your love more than any gift you can buy & what man doesn't like to be pampered once in a while? :)
My husband LOVES his Garmin.
-mrstlc
I would definitely get the GPS. But instead of buying it for him, I would make him a coupon or something saying that he can pick it out and you'll buy it. I know it's not as exciting as opening the box, but, if he's like my husband, he knows just which one he wants and this way you can get it for him without worrying it's the wrong one.
I'd go for the GPS! I'm getting dh a watch from Orvis with my $25 off $50 coupon. The watch is $60. I bought a iron diiner bell to hang outside on sale. So I stayed at our $50 limit. If I hadn't spent my e-bay money yet on other things, I'd do alittle something more. Try e-bay or Craigslist for the GPS. Great idea!
Just splurge and get him the GPS! :)
Crystal,
About the links. If I type your site directly into my computer I can get into it but if I click on my affiliate link through the BW pict, It says page cannot be found. Any ideas?
Beth in GA
Crystal, I know nothing about GPS units (except that my husband also wants one very, very much!), so I'm no help there.
However, I think you should splurge and do it. I am usually the strict one with my budget at Christmas, and he usually goes over and spoils me.
This year, I decided to spoil him! I had to ask him for a bit of extra money, if there was any way the budget could handle it, so he gave me a bit extra.
I also asked the family member who had drawn his name if they would pitch in some money towards the gift, so that helped a lot!
I just got him a pair of really high quality Bose headphones, used, from ebay. He's been wanting some for years! I can't wait to give them to him!
Stephanie @ Keeper of the Home
I forgot to add that we have a $50 budget for one another too, but we both find ways to make it stretch. Since my husband planned to buy most of my gifts from amazon, he signed up for the credit card just to get the $30 they give you for signing. So he is spending $80 on me this year. We don't plan to use the credit card, we just got it for the perk and will cancel it later.
I plan to use some of my Walgreens gift cards to buy him a little more than the $50 will allow! We usually make lists out for one another of what we want and need and then we may buy one or two small surprises in addition to things they are already expecting. Some people may think this isn't any fun, but we'd rather have a practical gift that we'd really enjoy rather than something to clutter up the house.
I bought my husband a used GPS system for this Christmas -- it was used by one of our international students and is in great shape. I've heard great things about the brand Garmin too. I bought that brand. Heard lots of great things.
I knew that my husband wanted to be able to play his ipod on his commute, so this past birthday I gave him an ipod adapter gadget thingee (techie stuff is not my forte!) that I bought at Walmart (so he could return it easily to get whichever one he wanted) and also gave him extra birthday money if he wanted to upgrade it (which he decided to, and got a new cd player that has an ipod cable... much better sound!).
I know that he wouldn't have spent the money on it himself, but he enjoys it every day. If the agreed on budget is flexible, and you're adding your own money, I would say splurge! But if possible, make sure that he can return/exchange it so that he gets whichever one he'd prefer.
Or if you decide not to go for the GPS... why not surprise him with some silly things? Thrift stores often have old magazines. Maybe find one on a topic he's interested in. Or buy him a bunch of used books- that way you can get him lots more!
Either way, Merry Christmas!
Very funny that you put this up--I've pinched my pennies for months to save up enough to buy my husband the ipod he's wanted. I even got the whopping $11 off from Apple on Black Friday. I think I'm more excited than he will be!
My dh and I bought an "us" present of a Garmin (although I'm the one that is "directionally challenged") and I think it's a great idea! We actually bought one that was "reconditioned" so it was cheaper, but it still works great!
You can get a great Garmin GPS on sale for $169 at Walmart. A pawn shop is another great resource.
For a sweet sentimental gift I would buy a watch or a pretty desk clock with the inscription "the best times are times spent with you" Pam, South Bend
My husband and I always end up spending more on each other than we had originally discussed. :) It's kind of neat, because then we never know an exact dollar amount of the gift(s) we receive from each other. My vote is to go for the GPS. It sounds like Jesse does many nice, unexpected things for you throughout the year, so who cares if your gift costs a little more. :) That's just my opinion. This year I am giving my husband some DVDs and a book that he had been wanting...and my love, of course!
We bought my in-laws a GPS last year...it's a pretty cool gift!!
http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/Keri/
I would go for the GPS. Is there anyway you could casually ask Jesse some questions about it without being obvious? If not, I would just buying one that looked good to you and then just slipping a little note in with it saying that you won't be offended if he wants to exchange it for a different one. :)
My brother is an avid geocacher and self-described GPS geek. We are assuming you want a handheld unit, not one for attaching in your car. He suggests a Garmin eTrex unit. The cheapest one is called a eTrex Legend, and it is a good unit. It's around $130, depending on where you buy from. Any of the eTrexes are good, but that one is the most inexpensive. My husband bought me a TomTom 910 earlier this year, as a present and I love it (we really end up sharing it though)!
It's a totally worthwhile and pracital present, not just a silly little gadget. We use it all the time. Plus, we're in real estate (talk about a profitable home business!), so it's a tax write off!
They can be pricy, but I do recommend getting a good one that gives turn by turn directions at the very least. I would buy our TomTom again in a heartbeat (it came with European maps, which were a huge help to us), but I know there are other less expensive ones out there that work wonderfully.
Sometimes it is fun to spluge, as long as it is doable in the big picture budget.
We did a lot of research before we decided on our TomTom. I'd be happy to share it with you, if you were interested.
