I know, I know, I can never keep a secret
Well, you all convinced me to do it. So, yes, I bought the GPS.
But, since I can't keep a secret for the life of me and I also wanted to make sure I bought the right one and Jesse was okay with me spending the surplus funds on it, I decided to surprise him out of the blue and tell him tonight. I was pretty sure he'd be tickled since he loves surprises like this. And I was definitely right about that.
I spent a few hours researching the best deals on a Garmin (since I knew that was the brand he wanted) and finally settled on this one. When Jesse called on his way home, I told him that I had a surprise for him tonight. He started pestering me with questions which I had fun fielding and not letting on to anything.
When he got home, I told him that I'd asked for some input on a Christmas gift for him and I'd decided what to get but I needed him to help me pick it out. He was still stumped. So I proceeded to read him my post (with a long pause between "What he really wants is..." and I made him guess what the end of that sentence would read!) and then showed him the one I picked out. He loved it and so we bought it on the spot. And he is super excited about getting it.
Do you know how fun it is to be able to do something like this for my hard-working husband and see him so excited? Thank you to everyone who encouraged me to shake off my frugality and go for it. Maybe sometime I'll be able to pull something off like this without telling Jesse ahead of time!

Awesome!
And Crystal, you ARE being frugal by getting your husband this GPS device.
You shopped around for a great deal, and while the price exceeded your initial budget, you were wise with your money.
You got your husband a gift that is practical and that would make him happy.
You could afford to do so BECAUSE you are frugal--all of those $35/week groceries and deals at CVS free up quite a bit of the household budget, doesn't it?
That's the essence of frugality, in my opinion: Being good stewards with your resources, so that you can best take care of your family's needs and wants.
Good for you Crystal! Acctually this is the benefit of being frugal. You can make splurges like this and not feel the least bit guilty about it! It is so fun to surprise our hard working men. They do deserve it too!
I agree with what Kacie and Mrs. S said :D I'm glad that you got it for him :D
You go girl!
Yay for Crystal! I agree with everyone else....when you are as good with saving and being frugal as you are, you can splurge once in a while. :-)
I agree with you, too. It is such fun and a great feeling giving them something they have been wanting a while. They are like kids. :-)
Yay! I'm so glad you got the GPS. Even though Jesse knows about it, at least you can rest easy knowing you got the right one. You still were frugal and shopped around and didn't impulse buy. This is one of the big reasons why I endeavor to be frugal the rest of the year...so I CAN splurge now and then for the really important things (especially for my husband) rather than frittering away a few dollars here and there needlessly throughout the rest of the year.
Great choice Crystal. I have the same model and I really like it.
Yay, good for you! Doesn't it feel great to splurge and get him something really special? Sounds like he was really blessed by it. I can't wait to see my hubby's face on Christmas when he opens my splurge! So much fun!

great deal. My husband and I are getting a GPS unit for his parents for Christmas -- they're quite frugal, so right now, they're using an old laptop loaded with GPS software to navigate the streets. We're so happy to be giving them an upgrade!
Hi,
We don't have a CVS here, but I found out I can shop online. I still get a CVB card and credit is given. They have free shipping on orders over $49 this month and there's a $10 coupon too. Can I use the coupons you advertised on your site on the internet shopping?

LOL! That's wonderful, Crystal. :o) I don't think that I've ever actually been able to keep a gift secret from my husband, LOL! I get way too excited!
I definitely think you chose the right gift. It was what my vote would have been if I had commented.
I was going to mention looking for it on something like Craig's List or Ebay but you probably did just as well with how you got it.
A good friend of mine has a husband who just loves electronic and techno gizmos. He bought a Garmin a few months back that was practically brand new from a man who had recently lose his job. I am pretty sure Garmin is top of the line for GPS.
Congrats on your great find!
You made the right choice in your purchase. :)
HOW AWESOME! He will LOVE IT! You have blessed him and this will be such a help.
I am bursting to tell my husband that I am going to buy his police issue shotgun but my boys have sworn me to secrecy. It is driving me crazy because I want to really bless him but at the same time I want to be positive it is the one he wants! I worry about the money but like you, when you are frugal all year one of the most rewarding times is when you can bless your loved one and not worry because you have been a good steward with the resources the Lord has blessed you with.
I am excited for both of you!
Praising Him in ALL things,
Vickie
I'm glad Jesse liked your idea for a gift!
YAY!!!! :-) I think Kacie said it best - you were able to give this gift because throughout the rest of the year you worked hard and saved wisely - and you still hunted out the best bargain in order to get Jesse something he truly wants, will use, and deserves for HIS hard work and wise spending. GREAT job!
Good for you!
I had a similar situation with my hubby; and we went out this morning to find what he wanted. I'm even debating wrapping his main gift!
Merry Christmas!
