Frugal Friday: Frugal Valentine's cards

Thanks to Catherine's inspiration, Kathrynne and I had fun time this week making frugal Valentine's cards. We used a pile of magazines I'd gotten free and went through them and found pictures which would be suitable for cutting hearts out of--everything from table settings and bed spreads to wallpaper, gardens, and glassware. Kathrynne then helped me glue these on some extra note paper we had and we wrote little notes inside to our relatives.
We made a huge mess, but we had a grand time doing it, and I'm sure all the aunts and uncles and grandmas and grandpas won't mind that they aren't expensive storebought Valentine's, or that the hearts might be a little crooked, or that Kathrynne might have applied an excessive amount of glue to most all of them.
Total cost: approx. $0 plus the postage to mail the cards
Total time: an afternoon of fun
= priceless memories made together
The possibilities for using extra magazines to create special cards for loved ones are almost limitless--and to think I often find myself just tossing these! I'll be more careful in the future to think about ways I might be able to recycle into something beautiful and meaningful what I normal just mindlessly toss out. Isn't that what creative frugality is all about?

Crystal,
I'm sure your family will feel very blessed & you are teaching Kathrynne to give to others as well.
A frugal Valentine's tip:
We had a lovely meal at home - including grilled steak, green salad with homemade honey mustard dressing, sauteed green beans & chocolate cake with buttercream frosting for dessert. We have enough for 2 meals that cost far less than any 1 restaurant meal for us both, and no crowds which is even better.
Sorry, somehow my Mr. Linky got posted twice.
Thaks again Crystal for sponsoring this wonderful event!
The cards sound very fun. It is nice to hear that you are involving Kathrynne at such a young age. We used homemade cards at our house too. The kids have some crafty fun and we save money at the same time.
What a great way to recycle. My niece used to make envelopes out of pretty magazine pages to use when she sent thank you notes.
What great memories you are making with your girls!
Blessings,
Vickie@PursuingSimplicity
Your Valentine's Cards are priceless!
I posted on the Kroger deals I was able to get thanks to your tips! We had a quiet Valentines day... I made my hubby's favorite food.... Fried Chicken Livers... the rest of us ate Pizza!

That does sound like a wonderful use of old magazines and a memorable way to spend time with Kathrynne. I am sure she was thrilled with the project. :)
I must say, Crystal, you have changed a lot! I can remember several years ago when you came over to help me organize my room. We were throwing away all kinds of papers and magazines. And needfully so! I never would have thought you would be one to save magazines some day! LOL!
But, yes, saving a few things can be frugal and profitable. Great ideas! I enjoyed reading them. Do we get to see any pictures of your's and Kathrynne's homemade creations?
That's a precious idea! I'll have to do that next year with my little girls... they love things like that!
When I was in college, my roommates and I loved music, but we often didn't have enough money for new CDs that we wanted. So when someone did buy one, we would burn copies for each other, and then we would cut pictures from old magazines and glue them onto cardstock to make covers for the CDs. We always made a huge mess, and it was loads of fun, and now a lot of my favorite pictures are decorating some of my favorite music!
Yay for frugal fridays!
The Valentine's Day cards are a great idea. I'm sure you all had a lot of fun, which is the best part.
Have a great day!
Jennifer
Thank you, Crystal.
What a great valentine's idea.
We love our magazines! When we can, we donate our magazines to our local library. They have a box where you can dump your magazines and pick new ones that others have dumped. It is a great (and free) way to get magazines for the exact puporse you need them for!

Sounds like a great idea! I'm thinking now that my three year old son and I will try this for Easter. Thanks!
