I pulled my hair out all day to try and come up with this great Works-For-Me-Wednesday tip

My mom is a stickler for clean combs and brushes. I think she washes hers in detergent every morning. After she alphabetizes the spices and washes down the plant leaves with cotton balls, that is.

At any rate, I'm not quite so fastidious, but I do like to have a clean brush and comb. So here's my quick method (Promise me you won't laugh, okay?): after removing the hair from the brush (ick!), I throw the comb and brush into the washing machine with a load of laundry. Saves me the scrubbing with detergent part and the combs and brushes come out squeaky clean.

For other, invariably less lame ideas, visit Works-For-Me-Wednesday.

Can I admit that I laughed just a little? But only because it's a great idea that I would have never thought of! I'm guessing that you would want hairbrushes to be washed with the towels and not the delicates though?

I NEVER EVER would have even thought to do this! LOL Wow -- I didn't know people actually clean their brushes! I remove the hair, but that's it! LOL Guess I learned something today! :)

Oh yeah -- and my Mom alphabetizes her spices, too! (And mine when she comes to visit! LOL)

At first I laughed, but now that I think about it, this is a great idea, one I will have to try. I confess I'm not good about washing out my combs.

Hmmm, well, I like them cleaned out, but cleaning them out by hand is usually enough for me!

That is a fantastic idea! What kind of brush do you use? I am just wondering if my big paddle brush will come out okay...

Perhaps in one of those mesh laundry bags to prevent the bristles snagging other things:) Gill.

I am going to try your "trick" as well. :) Does it make a lot of noise in the washer or do the clothes muffle the sound? I guess I will find out!

Blessings to your family!

I have to admit that I scrub mine with an old toothbrush with some shampoo. Dirty hairbrushes gross me out.

Wait, your mom washes her hair in DETERGENT!? AUGH! My curls are snapping at the mere thought!

But the hairbrush idea, if I owned one, is a super idea!

That's a great idea! I never thought to do that and I'm all about getting two jobs done for the price of one. Next load of laundry I do (which should be happening right now), in go the combs and brushes!

Andrea: She washes her *combs and brushes* in detergent, not her hair! :)

Crystal,

Is that a picture of YOUR hair brushes and combs? I'm afraid I'd be too embarrassed to post mine, since they are lucky if they get the hair pulled out, let alone actually cleaned! But--your tip is too easy to NOT try, so I'll do it with my next load of towels. (I'll THINK about before and after photos, but I'm not sure...)

I hope Anonymous realizes that it's probably best to remove the brush AFTER the wash, and not let it go in the dryer...

Have a great day,

Merrilee

This really seems like a great idea. Being the hairdresser I am, I have to admit, throwing them in the washer Never crossed my mind. We always use a product called "Brush Delite" and soak them with hot water. My concern is that the long strands of the hair may get caught in the drains, or other parts of the machine and cause some major trouble down the road. It has to go somewhere! HMMM...

What a time-saver, Crystal! Thankyou. I tried it this morning with a load of sheets and towels and the brush came out fine! Is it safe to do this with a natural boar bristle brush? My daughter has quite an expensive one, and I wasn't game to try it with hers.
