In stark contrast to her sister, this girl *loves* food of all types
In the past two weeks, Kaitlynn has become completely mobile doing this scoot-crawl maneuver to get wherever she wants to go. And she's especially fast when the end goal is food! Completely opposite to her sister, she has instantly taken a great liking to food and constantly is begging for more. We're trying to take it slowly, much to her chagrin. At the rate she's going, I think she'll wean herself before too long.
She is also "talking" a lot more and just this week learned to clap and play peek-a-boo. We're now starting to teach her some basic signs. I can hardly believe she'll be eight months in just two short weeks!

Wow! lol. That's funny how she ate that orange slice! :)
Awww...sweet!
I'd recommend adding www.kellymom.com to your list of sites, if you haven't already. It is extremely rare for a baby to wean themselves before a year, so you've at least got that!
Liam just started baby food (a spoonful or two of pureed fruit), and I'm already feeling sad over the time he weans. But nursing is so good for them, and good for me. Tammy blogged on it over at her site, and I wholeheartedly agree! It gives Mama a few minutes of relaxation and time with the baby (unless baby is being a fussy nurser, which we've encountered lately..)
Kaitlynn looks so much like Kathrynne!
She is getting so big! She really savored that yummy orange. My daughter just turned 2 today and she amazes me in how much she learns in such short periods.

Love her big blue eyes! :-)
Your little baby is growing up...sniff sniff :-)
Since she has started an interest in 'talking', are you and Jesse beginning to 'talk' with her with little words and such? It's never to early to start, that's for sure.
God Bless your week Crystal!
Huh... I never thought to just give my little one the orange slice. I usually just bite or cut off little pieces. Maybe I'll try it. If your 8 month old can do it, my 14 month old should be able to! :)
Thanks for the fun pictures!
She is so cute!
I think when I started reading your blog Kathrynne was about 8 months,my how the time has flown.
Thanks for the tiny glimpse into your daughter's life...it is especially interesting to me because we shared the same due date, both delivered two weeks early and both had a little girl. And our daughter has just started crawling too.
Oh my word, she's simply precious!! :) I simply cannot believe she's almost 8 months already! That's crazy; I remember praying and praying and praying during your labor. I accessed your blog so much that day, looking for the next update. :) That seems like just yesterday.
HI Crystal,
My baby is 21 months and eats very well. She has not weaned herself completely though. She will drink water and milk during the day, but when nap-time and night time comes she wants Mom. She will still nurse during the night too when I put her in our bed.
You have very cute girls.
Regards,
Natalie.
Hi Crystal,
What signs have you begun using with Katlynn? Did you sign with Kathrynne? My little one is 14 months old and is using about 6 signs consistently - recently during lunch, he proceeded to throw all of the food off his high chair and onto the floor, without even taking one bite. Exasperated, I said "What do you want, Owen?", and he signed "milk and banana". I gave him what he wanted, and he happily gulped it down. :) It's so great being able to communicate with your baby before they can talk, isn't it??
My 8 month-old Bethany LOVES food, too! She wants to feed herself! Kaitlynn has the most beautiful, expressive eyes..."Mmm...let's see what this tastes like...YUM!" she's saying. :)
That is the cutest thing. I showed my 7 year old and he really enjoyed seeing how Kaitlynn ate the whole orange. :)
Wow! I didn't realize she was a year old already! She's so cute :) I remember being excited to feed my babies oranges since it's one of my favorite fruits. Citrus fruit and strawberries are too acidic and have a potential for allergy so that's why you have to wait. Oranges and Strawberries are, hands down, my favorite so I was so disappointed when my younger one had a bite of orange and then had the worst runny poo, it just burned her poor little bum. So we waited another month and tried again (at 13 months) and she was fine.
aw! Your little baby is just growing right up, isn't she? :) What a cutie ;)
Wow, I typed a long comment and blogger ate it! Second try:
It's great that Kaitlyn is taking to solids so well (my son had no interest until about 11 months, but eats very well and still nurses now at nearly 20 months), but that for the first year they should be for experimentation and NOT replace breastmilk as her primary form of nutrition! I second (or third?) the recommendation of Kellymom. It's invaluable for nursing mothers.
I would also caution you to be careful with citrus. It's an allergenic and I don't believe recommended before nine months. Remember that it's often not a child's first exposure that can cause a reaction and frequently the younger a child is exposed to an allergen, the more likely it is to become an issue later. I always err on the side of caution with foods of that sort. They have the rest of their lives to enjoy oranges, peanut butter, and fish but they're only nurslings for a short time.
Here's a great chart on introducing solids at an appropriate pace:

Of course, you have to decide what's best for your family, but this is just more to think about!
How sweet! You know, my daughter is a year old now and is much more interested in food than her big brother was, but is still happily nursing, so Kaitlynn may not necessarily wean herself just yet. My daughter was interested in food starting at about four months, though we waited to really start with anything until she was closer to six months. She eats three meals a day now at the table with us, has a snack or two, drinks diluted juice and water out of a cup, and STILL nurses four or five times a day.
My son was (and still is) a very picky eater, even though I tried early on to introduce him to a variety of foods. I'm hoping that my daughter continues eating pretty much anything I give her. It's funny how two children from the same family can be so different when it comes to eating! :)
Don't worry, folks, we're not feeding her a diet of oranges--we were just at a restaurant and handed it to her to suck on, not expecting she'd actually eat it. :) We just got a kick out of it and I hoped you all would, too.
And the comment on weaning was tongue-in-cheek. I don't expect her to wean anytime soon, but she sure is into solid food. We're starting her out with one vegetable at night right now and moving slowly from there. I'm not in any hurry.
Crystal, you have now shown us multiple pictures where beautiful Kaitlynn is beaming, and her smile is curving a bit to the right and her little bitsy tongue is sticking out . . . and it makes me laugh aloud, every time! (How do you refrain from squeeeeezing and kissing her every single minute?! It must take a lot of willpower for you to get ANY work done!) ;-)
Oh, Lord, You are so good. I hope and pray that we are blessed with healthy children, as you and Jesse are.
As long as Kaitlynn doesn't have any adverse reactions, I'm sure it's just fine for her to suck on an orange slice now and then. I don't think citrus is quite the same as peanut butter and fish. I was cautious when my children showed a great interest in food at a young age and was always worried that it would dampen their interest in breastmilk, since I really wanted to reach the one year milestone with nursing. Well--it didn't! :) I went slowly with introducing different kinds of foods, and they loved everything put in their mouths and still wanted to nurse alot. So I think it really depends on the baby. I'm sure if you are letting Kaitlynn have healthy foods and still offering breast milk she will continue to thrive as she is obviously doing. What a sweetie! :) It's great that you have kept going with nursing even though your life sounds busy. My son nursed until he was 18 months (he's almost 3 now) and then weaned himself on his own. My daughter is 13 months and still going strong so I'm hoping to make it to 18 months at least with her as well.
Doesn't if feel great to see your child eating a variety of healthy food????? It makes me smile every time my 3 year old asks for salad for snack!
Allergies tend to be a family thing (TEND to be--not always). Most of the time, if allergies run in your family, then you should be extremely careful, but if not, then don't lose sleep over it. Of course, there are common sense things--like no peanut butter and no honey for the first 1-2 yrs. I was pretty hyper about solids with my first, but believe me, there is only so much you can be hyper about with the second and third (or more) kid. I've been a bit shocked at myself with my youngest. I didn't feed her solids at all for much longer, and then I just mashed up this and that from my plate (no food processor or baby food this time). And you know what? She doesn't care at all! It's mostly just a fun, full-body experience for her...and yummy too! :)
Phebe
I haven't visited in a while - Kaitlynn is such a darling! Those big blue eyes. Aww. :)
I have an orange lover too! He does have trouble with the citrus though so it is a rare treat! If I buy them, he just eats as many as he can until they are gone. However, I think it has to do with touching the skin so now he is potty trained he will be happy to have oranges again!
Too cute! I have that same little outfit for my daughter :)
Way to go, Kaitlynn! What an adorable girl you guys have, Crystal! Grace would've thrown that orange on the floor at 8 months, LOL. What a great eater - happy munching!
