Making Your Home a Haven Monday: Closet Clean-Up
Today's assignment is to pick a closet (or space) in your home which is in need of some clutter-busting and organization. Set your timer for 20-30 minutes and attack it with gusto!Take before and after pictures and post them on your blog and then come back here and leave your link below to show us your accomplishments!
I have a closet in dire need of attention which I'll be working on today. It's really bad so I'm almost hesitant to share pictures, but I'm going to do it anyway so that I'll be publicly accountable to clean it up and clear out the clutter. Come back later today to see my progress!
If any of you are great with closet organization and want to share some tips and ideas for the rest of us, please post about it on your blog so we can all learn and be inspired. Pictures of your closet organization systems or ideas would be more than welcome, as well.
By the way, thank you for all the helpful laundry tips and ideas last week. I had some interruptions so I didn't get to post an update but I did get the laundry D-O-N-E and caught up. And get this: for three whole days, there hasn't been one single pile of laundry in our room! That is a major accomplishment, I'm afraid to say. I've decided to try and commit to doing one load from start to finish six days a week. I'm testing this out for three weeks and we'll see if it enables me to keep on top of things.

I just tackled our master bedroom closet this past weekend... boy, was it a mess! Since it's a very large closet and we don't have an extra room for storing things, we use it for extra storage space (thankfully we have lots of shelves!). I had several empty (sturdy) hat boxes and plastic bins on hand and I used these to organize and store things- they turned out looking lovely on our shelves (much better than stacks of stuff everywhere)!
I found that storing papers into a folding file organizer works MUCH better than stacking them in a pile or tossing them in the bottom of a box (never to be seen again!).
I also tossed quite a few things into the trash- my motto is, "If I'm not using it, won't be using it, and don't need to save it for sentimental reasons... throw it out!" It certainly made for a more orderly closet!
I ended up with a clean closet AND more free space than I'd started out with. :)

It's so funny how your Monday challenges always seem to line up to what I'm already working on. I always do bathrooms on Mondays, for example, and today I was working on my front closet and coat closet. I'll try to remember to post pictures and come back and link!
Crystal,
I am working outside the home right now, so like to get my chores done before I leave for work. You might actually be able to take the whole weekend off from laundry if you are able to get up and put a load in the washer right when you get out of bed. While you're getting ready for the day, exercise, blogging, etc., put that first load in the dryer and another load in the washer. By the time you have finished nursing and start breakfast, the next load will be ready for the dryer. We are a family of five and this has been working for the past year. Clean clothes, happy family, satisfied working mom! :-)

(P.S.-Scott, my husband and I have decided that my last day at work will be June 6th, 2008. I couldn't be happier, SAHM here I come!)
Crystal, good for you for braving the closet! Can't wait to see your pics!
I did a post on my closet cleanout in January. I need to do a quick pick-up of said closet and tackle another.
In my tackle I got rid of so much stuff, I was surprised it all was in there!
I bought cloth storage units at Target and like the space much better.

Hi Crystal,
I just gave birth to baby #5 2 weeks ago, so although organizing and decluttering is a constant thing on my mind...it's been put on hold temporarily. =) I'm so blessed that my husband of 17 years doesn't mind that everything is not in it's place, and just recently told me that my main job now is to get as much rest as possible....which seems impossible with a newborn and 4 other children at home..AND homeschooling! =) I look forward to reading about your future organizing tips! =)

Did you post your picture Chrystal? If so I couldn't find it. Closets are a personal vendetta of mine around here so I would love to see yours if you got the chance to clean it out!
thanks
Where are your pictures??!!
I did not work on a closet, but my office which is the size of some closets! We are organizing so when we move things will be easier to move so I have just been shoviing extra stuff in here. It was so bad I do not know if I want to show the pictures, especially after seeing your last closet picture...(no offense intended!). I have not seen yours yet, but I am thinking of posting mine considering I worked until late last night and early this morning on it!
Thanks for the inspiration!!
