Giveaway: Especially for struggling homemakers
The winner of the giveaway from Light of Faith is: Julia Garner
We've been talking a lot about homemaking here recently and what perfect timing that I have two copies of Queen of the Castle to give away--graciously donated by Thomas Nelson publishers.
I picked up Queen of the Castle: 52 Weeks of Encouragement for the Uninspired, Domestically Challenged, or Just Plain Tired Homemaker when I was needing some encouragement in my homemaking and mothering a year and a half ago. Was I ever inspired and encouraged--it was just what I needed!
Lynn's style makes you feel right at home and leaves you very encouraged, not beaten down by extra guilt. As CBD says:
And if you're anything like me, you need to be often reminded that what you are doing is a noble calling which can bring great honor and glory to God. Queen of the Castle serves as an excellent reminder to not lose heart, to not give up, and to remember to find the humor in the midst of it.
To enter to win one of the two copies of this book I have to give away:

Broken into 52 weeks of encouragement, Queen of the Castle talks more about caring than china, fun than function, and participating than perfecting. Walker, who freely admits she is not Homemaker of the Year, is more like a neighbor sharing tips over coffee than a domestic diva. Wisdom combined with fun, Queen of the Castle encourages women and reminds them that hugs matter, prayer helps, and home counts.Home counts, folks... It really does. Even on days when it seems like I'm doing a really sloppy job of this homemaker thing.

My biggest struggle is doing the vacuuming and dusting. Partly because it's difficult physically, and partly because I have other things I must or want to do.
My biggest challenge in homemaking right now is keeping things picked up. We clean zones 3 times per day, but it still seems there are always books, papers, mail, socks, water glasses, pens, pencils, library books, etc. just everywhere. I am trying so hard to have a "place for everything" but I feel overwhelmed!
http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/rebeccahuff
Dusting and vaccuming is so hard. We have dark furniture and it seems the dust reappears as i am walking away from dusting. Three kids who are "scared" of the vaccum make it hard to find a good time to do it. Ugh.
My biggest struggle is keeping up with the clutter!!!

My biggest struggle is the living room.It is the dumping ground for everything when they come home from school, and very irritating.I spend at least an hour after everybody gets home asking "who's bookbag is this, who's jacket is this, come pick up x go put away y".I just want to give up most of the time.
One word- laundry!
Thanks,
Tina
Boy, do I need this book! I struggle with prioritizing the tasks at hand and sticking to my list of things to do - sometimes this means that the more mundane tasks are forgotten and the dishes or the laundry pile up. I guess that means I have a shifting problem area!!!
When I saw your sink I felt so relieved, because mine is that way most mornings as well. Only I don't have any children. :( Not yet anyways. I'm a SAHW and somedays I feel like I'm starting from scratch. Once we started school my mom stopped letting us help her. She wanted us to have an education and be whatever we wanted. Over the years several other issues compounded the matter, but in the end a housekeeping schedule is new to me. I wish I had someone nearby to understudy. Lol. I love your blog and the few others I've found that cover homemaking. It has been such a help to me. I never would have thought I should clean and dust inside my cabinets!
But I digress I would love a chance at this book, thank you for offering it to us. :)
Great giveaway!
My biggest struggle...what don't I struggle with?? But I guess I'd have to say making the bed. For some reason I have such a hard time making the bed in the morning..but yet, when I do make it, it makes the whole day go so much better!
I am interested in the books. My name is Jamie. I can be contacted at:

my biggest struggle is putting clothes and laundry away in a timely fashione!
My biggest struggle as a homemaker right now is training my children to honor each other. There has been so much sibling rivarly going on here, I'm not sure how to handle it.
On the cleaning end, I've always struggled with mopping floors. I simply don't like it, lol. But once I do it, I love the rewards of it! Thank you for this opportunity!
I've had this book on my list for a while. I would love to have it.
One of my biggest struggle right now (really, there are so many) is finding the balance between housework, the kids, and my own interests. It always feels like one or more is getting neglected.
I definitely need fresh inspiration! My biggest challenge is just juggling: time with my hubby, 5, almost 6 kids, homeschooling, freelance writing, housekeeping, getting ready for a garage sale, selling things on eBay, coupons. I can spin one plate really well, but the others all wobble. So I guess time management is my problem?
I think my biggest struggle is taming the loads of laundry, and consequently my closet.
newmom327 at yahoo.com
My biggest struggle is learning to juggle homeschooling my 6 year old and keeping up with any type of housecleaning. I feel like I am schooling all day (which I enjoy)and I run out of time to do my bigger cleaning projects.
My biggest struggle is keeping up with the dishes. I had to look twice to check that your photo was not of my kitchen sink!! ;-)
My biggest problem is grocery shopping -can't the food just arrive at the house.Just think of easy cooking would be!
My biggest struggle is mopping and dusting. I have always despised mopping since I was a kid. Maybe it is all the moving around of chairs and not walking on the floor for awhile. Who knows. And Dusting makes me sneeze. These two chores go way too long before I take care of them. Oh, I also struggle with cleaning my shower. That sounds gross but it really is hard to keep clean and my fleshly laziness says "just leave it." (Sigh) I could use some inspiration. ;-)
With 4 kids (2 teenagers) and three of four in sports right now it is definitely laundry. I feel like I am never caught up on it.
Smiles!
My current biggest struggle is to reduce the clutter and get organized, both in my home and time. This summer I will have been married 10 years. We moved on average once a year during the first 7 of those years, and I worked full time most of them, so I never was able to really get my home organized and running smoothly. Now I feel like I'm playing catch-up. I have really been working on this for the last year and a half, but I still have a ways to go. My oldest is 2 1/2, and I want to homeschool, so I know I have to get things running more smoothly if I want that to happen.
My biggest struggle is keeping the laundry up. I am rushing around late at night, trying to wash clothes that are needed for the next day.
~Tami (my email is linked from my profile)
Battling piles is an ongoing issue for me. I have the pile on the counter of important "to do" items, the pile of things to go to the basement, the pile of magazines to clip out recipes, the pile of homeschool work to sort through. Even when I tackle a pile, it seems to be just a few days before it begins to appear again. Most of the time, it feels like a losing battle.

Keeping up with the mundane parts of cleaning (vacuuming, dusting) and keeping my piles under control!
My biggest struggle is laundry. I can get the clothes clean, but they seem to pile up in the laundry room. It's too easy too "forget" about it because the laundry room is behind a closed door in the basement.
I just started staying home full time in December 2007 and still struggle with the whole routine of things. My greatest problem is the dishes too. Chasing after a very active toddler all day I tend to let the dishes pile up until it's a big mess!(I am getting better at it though!)
My biggest struggle right now is that my home is in such disarray that my children get into everything. If I could just get ahead a little and keep them out of my messes long enough to get them cleaned up, then I could have so much more peace. Each day I am taking small steps though and I'll eventually make it to that spot, but getting there is so stressful!
Hi Crystal!
My struggles change from time to time, but what seems to be the constant is the laundry monster! Everything else can be caught up to a point that is satisfactory, but then the laundry creeps onto my shoulders and weighs me down! It is the one thing that constantly discourages me!
Thank you for this giveaway!
My biggest struggle is simply adjusting to married life, with all of its domestic duties. Things seem to get out of hand easily. I know the shock of seeing a laundry pile that multiplies quicker than gerbils! I think, "How can this be? There are only two of us!" It seems strange, but I had more ease helping my mom take care of a family of (sometimes) 10 than just the two of us. And why is it that things I've cooked a gazillion times always turns out horrible when I'm trying to plan a special dinner???

My biggest struggle is laundry. It never ends. I'd be interested in this book. Thanks Crystal.

My biggest area of struggle is vacuuming hands down! My 2 year old is afraid of the vacuum and clings to my leg, saying "scared, scared." then when he sleeps, I don't want to wake him up.

I have a problem with following through w/ laundry. I'll run three loads and only dry and put away one in a day. I sometimes simply forget; other times, I get distracted. Thanks! ( meg.wilson@gmail.com )
Hi Crystal. This is an awesome giveaway! I'd love to read this book.
My struggle is laundry. We live in an apartment so we use community washers. I've got to somehow carry my laundry and my 13 month old down the stairs and over to the laundry room everytime I need something done. It's very frustrating.
I'd love to read this book!
My biggest struggle seems to be letting clutter accumulate throughout the day.
reneecordle(at)yahoo.com
The clutter is taking over my house!!! It's like little gremlins come in when I'm not looking and spreading the clutter! Honestly, I work a full time job, have numerous responsibilities at church and to our ministry, and I just can't keep up!
:-)
That sounds like a book I could use -- my greatest struggle is the kitchen floor. There are usually muddy footprints on it before it even dries after mopping!
Thank you for offering this! My greatest area of challenge right now is reducing clutter. I'm struggling to teach everyone to put things back where they belong, so the clutter doesn't re-appear every time I get it under control. We seem to have certain areas that just can't stay cleared off, like the kitchen table!
Please enter my name.
Deep cleaning is usually my greatest challenge (refrigerator, shower, baseboards, etc.) It's easier to just do the basics and get by with that!
wow, i would have to say my biggest challenge is laundry in all forms. from keeping up with it to clearing out when seasons change even weeding out clothes that need to go to a new home or a garbage home. it is really one of my biggest struggles. decluttering in general is huge. these projects take a large amount of time and i struggle with breaking them down into smaller pieces while keeping up with loving on my hubby, precious children, home education, etc... i would love to read this book! thank you1 blessings, jen in al kcjenkey@charter.net
What a blessing this would be!!! I struggle with scheduling & keeping things on a schedule. I'm rather organised, but I don't seem to have any concept of a schedule. We homeschool, so I feel organised scheduling is important in our household. I've tried, believe me, I've tried, LOL... Thank you for offering up a glorious gift!!
My blog link is attached as my name ^^... Thank you & God bless you!
Thanks for the contest! I have several challenges ... I would say #1 is just clutter, followed closely by folding and putting away laundry. I can get it washed and dried, but it just seems to stack up after that!

My biggest struggle is just getting it all done.
Due to circumstances though;) I've just learned that I do my best but spend my energy on my God given priorities.
I have a clean house but it's definitely not spotless and for this season in my life that is ok!
Lizzie
My biggest challenge is clutter. I have been struggling with it for years.
ddurbanski at earthlink dot net
My biggest struggle in homemaking is getting up in the morning. After actually typing it out it sounds pretty bad, i'm just so tired. Thanks for doing the giveaway!
Worst areas of housekeeping procrastination: papers on horizontal surfaces and the bathtub!
Julia Garner
juliapgarner AT gmail DOT com
My biggest struggle is doing a good cleaning. I do a good surface clean but rarely have time for deeper cleaning. It never hits the top of the "urgent" list.
clewis22@charter.net
I struggle with the shower. It has a sliding door and the track is impossible to keep clean. The bathroom isn't well ventilated so slim seems to grow quickly and easily. Scrubbing Bubbles is the only cleaning product that works and it's very noxious. I try to stay on top of it and scrub it every week but often 3,4, or 5 weeks will pass before I talk myself into doing it again (hanging head in shame)
Erin
My biggest struggle is staying focused and organized in stressful times... like right now... moving and renovating our new house!
I struggle with everything that doesn't get done every day. The dishes and laundry are alright (as long as I'm not in the throes of morning sickness), but the mopping and vacuuming and cleaning the oven and mending (Why must those buttons keep coming off?) never seem to get done in a timely manner. I'd love to read this book!
kansasmom1998 at gmail dot com
My biggest challenge is the futility of it all. Theoretically, you can have _ALL_ of the dishes done and put away, but how long does it last? And unless you do laundry wth all of your family completely naked, you will _NEVER_ have all of it done (if we didn't share facilities with our building, believe me, I'd be sorely tempted)!
I try to keep up, but it gets away from me and once it's out of hand, I just don't see the point in bothering until I know someone is coming over. That, of course, hurts my husband's feelings because he'd like it all to be clean for _him_ and not just for company.
All in all, I'm doing great considering the (lack of) training I got as a child, and worlds better than I did even just a few years ago, but it's still not up to anything like "snuff" the vast majority of the time.
My greatest struggle is finding the balance between letting my children have toys out to play with vs. the house being overrun with their stuff!
I'm in the process of coming up with a system (it's working so far in the trial period), but it's just for their bedrooms.
Once we get the hang of it, we'll be expanding to other rooms in the house.
As I get this perfected, I'll be sharing over at my website/ blog how we've hopefully 'mastered' the mess.
Keep in mind, I have 3 children, 3 years and under - so I struggle DAILY. =)
I love the encouragement I find here - and would LOVE the chance to win this book for further encourage, thanks for sharing!
I, too, struggle with clutter, but I think a bigger struggle is against my own sloth. I am just a very lazy person, I think, and I justify a lot of my procrastination by convincing myself that I am enjoying the moments with my kids. I DO enjoy lots of moments with them, but I also know in my heart that I could do more.
my big challenge is that we have to share our very small room with our 6 month old, and it gets very messy VERY fast. I really need to spend 5 minutes in the morning and at night picking up -- but I get lazy and let it get messy far too often.
I would say that keeping the floors vacuumed is one my biggest struggles. Thanks for doing this giveaway! The books sounds wonderful!

My biggest challenge is getting up before my kiddos. For a while I was up and ready for the day before they were....but now it takes so much effort to get out of bed early. And then our whole day is thrown off. It's frustrating!
emessing2 at hotmail dot com
Hi! My biggest challenge in homemaking right now is remembering that the housework can take a break, but I need to spend more time with my kids on a daily basis.
My biggest challenge would be a tie- dishes and paper stacks. It seems that I never have enough time or energy to deal with them.
titus2journey.blogspot.com
Mine is definitely keeping the bathroom clean - it's not that I hate cleaning the bathroom, I just always "forget" until it gets icky.
Dishes! The office desk!! When I'm not looking, there must be a dish fairie that creeps in and stacks up dirty dishes, because i surely do not know how they get there or where they all come from! And the office desk also seems to go from clear and spotless to piled high when I'm not looking... it has to be when I'm not looking... I'm not actually contributing this this, am I? LOL! I'd love the book.. it sounds like a great inspiration.
My biggest strangle is keeping up with laundry. I don't ever do it until there is absolutely nothing else to wear
amomspeaks at gmail dot com
My biggest homemaking challenge is definitely storing the kids' toys. Right now they are everywhere. We have a small home and 4 boys with lots of stuff (well, it sure seems like lots when you are constantly picking it up lol.) There isn't any room in their rooms for the toys and they play with them in the living room anyway, so it's hard to keep that area clean. Thanks for the giveaway, I think all homemakers need some encouragement every now and then.
My biggest struggle is keeping the kitchen clean - dishes, counters, stovetop, floors, all of it. I'll get it good and clean, but it only stays that way for a couple of days before things start to slip.
My biggest struggle is getting distracted and going from one thing to another and not finishing anything. Maybe our resident toddlers have something to do wiht that =) A close second is putting away the laundry.
My biggest struggle is finding balance - I love a really clean house, but I have two little children and my old standards are not possible if I want to spend time with them!
My biggest struggles in homemaking right now are (1)keeping the home office tidy, (2)making all the beds every day, and (3)deep cleaning. I have had morning sickness for over four months now, and I find it hard, more than anything, to be consistent in these three areas. It is one thing to work hard on a good day, but another to persevere on a bad day!
my biggest struggle would have to be not taking a moment for myself once in awhile. With 6 kids, its easy to forget that even mom's need a break here and there. Between the neverending laundry pile, and all the running around, dishes, diaper changing etc...once I pick up one part of the house, another is messed up and the cycle just repeats lol.
My biggest struggle is the papers in the office, I write a note, put it next to the computer, another, another, until the pile is toppling over, and when I need to find something, well...I can't or the date is passed, or well you get the picture!
Folding and putting away laundry is my biggest struggle.
Melissa at Anxious for Nothing
My biggest struggle is the laundry. The washing part isn't so bad - it's the folding and putting away part!
My greatest challenge this past year or so has been caring. The "uninspired" part of the title of the book really is me lately. I struggle to stay ahead of the messes, but my family makes 2 or 3 messes for every one that I manage to get cleaned up. I feel that if I were to work non-stop for weeks, I'd still be behind...so why bother? It's wrong, and I fight it, but it's really a struggle lately.
My biggest struggle is vaccuming. I just don't want to lug out that machine when the floor needs it!
Thanks for all your encouragement, Crystal!
staceyloraine@gmail.com
I'm having a hard time with the bathrooms. We don't get them terribly dirty, but I should probably clean them at least every two weeks!
My biggest struggle is keeping our closets organized. They're such a mess!
musicboo2000@yahoo.com
Oh, Crystal, my biggest struggle is papers - piles and piles of papers! Important stuff that can't just be thrown away, and much of it requiring some kind of action! Yikes!
What a fun book! My greatest challenge is not falling apart when one thing goes wrong. I have a tendancy to say "Oh well, we'll start over tomorrow." instead of fixing what can be done today.

My struggle is getting our clean laundry from the table next to the dryer into our dresser. I can keep up with the dirty laundry... I just can't seem to get the clean clothes folded and put away. I would love to win a copy of this book and thanks for the great site!
Laundry, laundry, laundry. With 4 growing boys it seems endless. I have a system set up, but until I find something that actually DOES the laundry--it will always be a struggle! I think the part I dislike is going down into our basement to do it. It is a big room, but rather dark and dreary. I call it my dungeon room.
This book sounds like a fun and motivating read. Thanks Crystal for all ya do!
My biggest struggle? Only 1? Hmm..my couch is covered with clean clothes that need folding yet here I am on the computer...So my biggest struggle is stepping away from the computer! :-)
Please count me in ! :) My biggest problem is vaccuming and not putting things away after I use them. Things tend to pile up!
Leigh
What a timely book for our family! My biggest problem is desks. I have three and they are all covered with "important" stuff. I usually carry my work elsewhere because of all the junk! Inspiration to get it done and keep it picked up is just what I need.
farmama@gmail.com
Do I have to pick just one?!? With two sons (one who's almost 3yr and the other who just turned 1yr) I've got alot that I'm struggling with in the area of home-making... But one of the big ones I guess is motivation. With toddlers, sometimes I feel like whats the point? No matter what I do its just gonna get undone in 5min anyway!
www.wanibug.blogspot.com
My biggest struggle is keeping the kitchen as clean as I'd like it. Even when it's decluttered (meaning clean dishes get put away and food gets put back in the fridge or pantry), there's still paperwork, things piling up, crumbs on the counter, and crumbs on the floor. I sweep multiple times a day but now that the weather's nicer we're tracking in even more than usual--and I make everyone take their shoes off when they enter the house!
Thanks for doing the giveaway.
My biggest struggle right now is paper piles! They are everywhere! :)
Oh, I so need some encouragement as a homemaker. My biggest area of struggle is, far and away, keeping the bathrooms clean. I *hate,* with a passion, cleaning bathrooms. So, although my laundry sometimes looks like "Mt. Neverest," I'd tackle it before toilets any day!
If I win, you can reach me through my blog -- http://www.hsmomof3.blogspot.com/
Thanks!

My struggle right now is keeping the house clean while remodeling! It is such a struggle and I really want my house to look clean but it is hard when something is always being done to it. Plus we are doing the remodel ourselves so it takes a bit longer than normal.
michaelswadley at yahoo dot com
ouch this is a hard one! I would have to say that the kitchen is the hardest to keep up. If it is clean the day runs smooth, if not the day is a mess. Thanks for the opportunity to win a good book!
Shorty gilpin@sbcglobal.net
I struggle with the dishes, too. Every morning my sink looks just like yours!
I enjoy vacuuming, but dishes are really a struggle for me.
This book is just what I need, thank you!
It's the same struggle as it has always been-laundry :-)

Managing my domestic help--my children! We have assigned chores to our kids in order to teach them how to vacuum, clean bathrooms, dust, etc., and help me keep my sanity. But even with great chore charts and incentives, the help is only as good as their manager, and she can be a little scatty! Not to mention that sometimes it's easier to do the tasks myself instead of reminding and overseeing the jobs.
Laundry! And staying on top of the clutter produced by 4 kids under the age of 6!
I struggle trying to get past the daily chores so that i can actually get to the clutter & deep cleaning.

Bev.
hs4god at charter dot net
Scheduling! Our 2-year old and 11-month old are growing and changing, so their sleep needs are changing as well. I'm trying to figure out what works best for our family--the kids' sleeping from 7 to 7 with no nap, or an earlier wakeup and later bedtime with a nice 2-hour block of naptime in the afternoon. I need to balance it with quiet time (and shower time!) for myself. We'll see what happens!
My biggest challenge in homemaking right now is the office/school room/craft room/catch-all room! Seems there are always piles in there and I can't seem to find a place for everything. I am SO much about having a home for EVERY thing. It's easier to pick up and the children can help because they know where things go. I just can't seem to get a handle on this room right now. It is really a cluttered eyesore - one of those rooms that I shut the door on when someone comes over!! :) I feel like we need some more space in our home at this point in our family, but I also believe one should learn to live in the place God has provided. So...what to do??
Oh, the kitchen. I am so there with you. Looking forward to some encouragement!

My greatest struggle is cleaning out clutter, and then letting it sit piled up on the floor in my dining room. It just sits there for weeks while I decide if I want to Ebay it, Craig's List it, or garage sale it.
Please enter me in the drawing!
My email is: frazikat@embarqmail.com - I don't ever check my Google mail account.
OK Crystal-
i am domestically challenged in all areas except cooking. PLEASE help. I'm a new mom at 40 years old & have no energy. i could really use the encouragement.
thanks,

My biggest homemaking struggle is currently organizing paperwork -- because I haven't kept up with what system I had, or created a new one, so new papers just keep piling on old: aack!
My biggest struggle right now is the bathrooms. To be honest, I only go in the larger bathroom to take a shower, so I rarely know if the toilet needs to be cleaned until it's nasty enough that my 7 yo daughter says something. And her sink....ohhhhhh her sink is always AWFUL because she spits the toothpaste in one spot and doesn't wash it down the drain afterward. Blech. Trying to find time to work, take care of the kids, homeschool, do laundry and pick up the kitchen and walk the dog and... yeah. Something's gotta give, and most days it's the bathrooms. ;-)
Thank you for being an inspiration to me -
My struggles are centered on keeping the sink FREE of dishes, getting the clean laundry folded AND put away, and staying on top of the paper pile(s)!
Blessings,
Gina
This book looks like exactly what I need. :) My biggest challenges right now are cooking and keeping things going right at home. The biggest reason is b/c I'm still feeling like a newlywed and am in college.
Thanks for hosting this giveaway!
My biggest struggle would ne keeping the laundry done, folded, ironed & put away.

My biggest struggle is making a meal plan and sticking to it! I think the solution is to start cooking dinner early in the day, because we continue to eat out too often because I feel tired! We have three young children and I want them raised on healthy food. In addition, of course, I love family mealtimes and they are a household priority. I suppose I need the motivation to "avoid weariness!"
My biggest challenge in homemaking is ORGANIZATION! LOL! I need a plan and some willing hands to help me carry out the plan. :) I have got to get a plan together where what I need to do and when is written down, and I can just check it off.
My biggest challenge would have to be the clutter. I am only one person in a family of four. I am a minimalist and nobody else is willing to let anything much go. Try as I might, it is hard to keep things under control, even when I make each person responsible for their own things.

Crystal, I love your anti-procrasting week! And I can't wait to see your ideas for clutter next week. I am planning a yard sale for memorial day!
I think the one thing I struggle with is the bathroom! It seems like I clean it and walk out and turn around and it filthy! My husband's a mechanic so that doesn't help!
