Frugal Friday: The Total Money Makeover Live Event

What could be more frugal than attending The Total Money Makeover Live Event last Saturday?

Okay, well, it does cost around $33 to get in, but it's likely one of the best $33 investments you'll ever make! At least we certainly think so.

This was our second year to attend a Live Event and I have to say that there's nothing quite like being in the same room for five hours with over 11,000 people who are all ecstatic about "living like no one else". In a world where being debt-free, taking personal responsibility, exercising self-discipline, and wisely stewarding your money is practically unheard of, this was quite the breath of fresh air!

We know by heart many of the things Dave shares since we are practically Dave Ramsey "groupies", but we can always use a refresher course to give us new and revived motivation for why we're doing what we're doing. It's easy to lose focus or get off track without constant reminders to prod us on to continue making sacrifices now which will, Lord-willing, allow us to bless many others in the years to come and also to, as Dave says, "change our family tree".

The biggest blessing of attending the Live Event was the realization of how much traction we've made in the last year towards our financial goals. It was especially exciting seeing as we've had a number of setbacks this past year: my hospital stay and health issues, Kaitlynn's birth, needing to buy a new-to-us vehicle, and Jesse being unemployed for a few months.

God has been so faithful to us in providing for us and I also must say that this frugal living stuff really does pay off, even if sometimes it seems like we're making a lot of sacrifices and seeing very little light at the end of the tunnel. We were able to step back and look at the bigger picture at the Live Event and it was so thrilling to clearly see the difference that a year of "living like no one else" has made!

The girls and myself at the Live Event--nevermind how tired we look. (This was after three days of having a garage sale, four days of having colds, and five or more days of too little sleep. Needless to say, by the end of the weekend, we were completely wiped out! But it was worth it!)

I can't wait til we can go to a Dave Ramsey event too. Using Dave's steps, we have been debt free since April 2007! We aim to keep it that way.

We would love to attend one of these events! We are watching to see if they come to our area. That is also a pretty inexpensive price to pay to get in.

Kaitlynn has grown so much! In that picture, you look just like Gretchen. I thought that was her at first!!

Sounds like you had a great week (minus the colds). One of these days I will get to reading Dave Ramsey. Maybe once we've settled on a house.

Do you have any frugal tips for buying appliances? We could really use them. :)

I've never been to an event like this. That must have been really motivational. I'll have to check out Dave Ramsey's information. I think he comes on the radio here. I've learned a lot about frugal living from Crown Financial Ministries. They have a show on our Christian radio station called Money Matters. They also play the show on their website crown.org

I was there too... and loved it! I looked for you while I was there. I can't imagine why I couldn't spot you in the crowd of 11,000 people (his biggest crowd ever!). :)

My husband and I were just above the rows on the right side of your picture. We were 16 rows back in the first side section closest to him. Boy it was emotional at times! It is hard for me to hear people scream they are debt free on his radio and the audio at the event without getting teary.... so silly... Our favorite part that we hadn't heard was the analogy of the wall o' debt and how he was encouraging people to climb to the other side, throwing podcasts classes and books over the top to encourage people to keep climbing. I can't do it justice but the mental picture is so clear and will stick with us as we finish our debt free journey and help our loved ones climb over the wall too.

thanks for the motivation to keep going. It has been quite frustrating for us lately, with grocery prices up every single week at the grocery store, gasoline at record highs and the expectation that we will be spending over $4000 this year on heating oil (a 60% increase from last year). Oh, and our property tax assessment just was bumped up by $70,000 (clearly we are not being affected by the drop in property values across the country).

It has been a very trying week for us, especially watching people around us planning and going on vacations, buying new "things" and seeming to have no care about how much they are driving their cars around town.

I so want to believe that we will come out where we need to be in the end, but it is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, right now.

Hi Crystal,
I am motivated to buy one of Ramsey's books. I looked on Amazon and saw that he has published a number of them. Can you suggest your favorite or the one you found most helpful? I can't wait to become a groupie myself =)

Crystal, Your two blogs have been a great inspiration to me. I've started couponing and CVSing because of what I have learned from you. Your insights into homemaking and Christian living are great...and you've got an awesome name too!

Thanks for taking the time to share with us all. God Bless You!

I, too, would be just as excited to attend this seminar! And I think that $30 is very, very reasonable for an event such as this. A fine example of the integrity of his program.
