Review and Giveaway from More Than Alive
Last year, I stumbled across a new company called More Than Alive. When I dug around their website, I was thoroughly impressed. Not only did they carry my favorite vitamins, they also had a large selection of other products, helpful articles, and delicious healthful recipes.
The owners, Vlad and Joy, contacted me a few months ago about possibly reviewing some of their products and you better believe I said "yes"!
I had been eyeing this Berkey water filter for some time so was thrilled to have an opportunity to try it out. After a few months of using this water filtration system, we are sold.
Not only does the Berkey do an incredible job of filtering, but it is so easy to take care of and refill. Since we only have a small family right now, the Berkey Light is perfect as it holds 2.75 gallons--we only have to refill it once every other day as opposed to multiple times per day like we had been doing with the Brita pitchers.
Best of all, for the price, this is an excellent deal--you no longer have to pay for bottled water and you don't have to worry about replacing filters! Plus, this system is much less expensive than water distillation systems or Reverse Osmosis systems:
Berkeys come in a variety of sizes, the largest of which holds up to six gallons of water so no matter your family size, there is a Berkey for you!
More Than Alive also sent me a bunch of their organic herbal teas to try out. As a tea aficionado, was I ever excited! And I have loved their teas--especially the Peppermint Leaf. I've never been much for peppermint tea, but there's something about this tea that I've become addicted to; in fact, I normally drink one to two cups of it everyday and have almost polished off the huge bag they sent me!
Once again, their tea prices are extremely reasonable--and they always give you a little extra just because they are generous like that. They just added some new flavors and, I must say, I think I'm going to have to buy some of this tea to drink the next time I'm having a "blah" day. Doesn't it just look like the perfect remedy?
---------------
For those who are interested in placing an order, More Than Alive has graciously offered to give a 10% discount on any order placed through Saturday from my blog readers if you use coupon code k2c9w at checkout. I would heartily encourage you to check out their website--they have many, many wonderful products to choose from and their customer service is also excellent. You will not be disappointed in this company.

And now for the giveaway... Who wants to win some delicious organic tea? Two winners will have the opportunity to choose two pounds of tea from More Than Alive. Here's how to enter to win:

With respect to cost per gallon of water, calculated upon the cost per gallon for replacement filters and energy costs, Distillation systems and RO systems properly maintained typically cost between 35-65 cents per gallon. A Berkey system typically costs about 1.6 cents per gallon. (Read more here.)Water is so good for you, but water that contains harmful chemicals is not going to do you any good. Knowing that our water has been filtered through such a high-quality filter has brought great relief to me; I don't have to worry about nasty contaminants in our water anymore!

Oh wow, it took me 10 minutes to choose. I think the Children's Composition and the Citrus Mint are my top 2 picks (finally). Thanks for the giveaway, and for pointing out a great resource!
mamalookingup (at) gmail (dot) com
I won't enter the giveaway, I just wanted to note that a water filter makes SO much more sense than a water filter. Buying bottled water really makes very little sense - you're paying for a resource that, lucky for us, is readily available in our homes! Bottled water is usually nothing more than filtered tap water, anyway. And when you consider the environmental costs of producing and recycling all of those plastic bottles, it's hard to justify buying bottled water. (Recycling is preferable to taking up room in landfills, but it also takes resources and fossil fuels.) If you need water on the go during the day, it's easy to buy a sturdy refillable water bottle.
This wasn't something I'd thought about until recently, and it seemed so obvious afterwards. I know you care a great deal about conscientious stewardship of the environment, and you've probably already considered this, but I thought I'd mention it on this post. Hopefully it's food for thought for your readers!
Peace,
Anna in Vermont

I can't believe you posted about the Berkley Light. My husband and I have set aside some money to invest in a water filter, and this is the one we are looking at! I was just calling around (today) to different health food stores to get their take on the filter. So...thanks for your review!
One thing that I wonder about the filter is whether it's a good filter to use in a third world country (where we are planning to go as missionaries). I'm wondering if it'll filter out all of the bacteria that can be dangerous. If anyone knows, I'd love to hear!
As far as the giveaway goes, I love the sound of the Daily Nourishment Tea and the Herbal Bath Tea!
Thanks Crystal!
Boy, it's hard to choose. I guess I'd like to try the Spiced Licorice and Immune Booster.
Seriously, they all sound fantastic. I would really like to try the SOS for PMS and the Spring Sensations - these would be my top 2! Coming in a close 3rd would be the Blues Brew! Thanks for offering this!

I have been looking for a good drinking water solution... just one question for you:
If you had to pay full price (well, minus the 10% discount you just mentioned!) would you still consider the Berkey to be a fabulous product/price/deal/whatever?
If you say yes, I am definitely going to beg Joshua for one!! :)
Thank you for offering this! SOS for PMS and and Peppermint Leaf would be great!

Hi! I'd love to try Emily's Lemony Ginger because our family loves ginger tea already. (We just mince it and steep in hot water 10 min.--wonderful!) We're also big fans of Sleepytime Teas and would love to try theirs. Thanks!
blessyourfamily@gmail.com
I really like the idea of a water filtration system, but I would be concerned about the water storage container used with this system (as well as many other systems out there). I checked the website and it is made out of Lexan, which is a type of polycarbonate. Lately, polycarbonate has been in the news because Bisphenol A (BPA) has been found to be released from it. If you do a search on BPA or polycarbonate, you'll find quite a few articles describing the research.
(I'm not trying to put a damper on your review, I just thought you'd want to know.)
Citrus Mint and Sweet Sleep get my vote. This is a great giveaway!

Tammy: I would say yes because I've price-compared a lot of different models and kinds and this one seems to be the best bang for your buck, from what I've found. My only complaint would be that the water is not cold, so you'll want to add ice to it in the summer. We keep ours on the dryer--which is right off of our kitchen so that it's very handy. The nice thing is that Kathrynne can help herself to her own water, too, since the dispenser is where she can reach it.
I remember that you're buying water in big jugs (right?) so I'd do a cost analysis and see how long it might take for it to pay for itself. From the research I've done, I also believe that water filtered through the Berkey would be superior to water you'd buy at the store.
Hope that helps!
Spring Sensations and Immune Booster sound awesome!
mrssuth at yahoo.com
My husband and I have had the Berkey Light for about three years now and we love the filters. However, within the past week or two something surfaced which concerned us. The Berkey Light is container is made of Lexan, a #7 plastic that is suspected to leach bisphenol-A, which has been linked to cancer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lexan
We have prayed and felt led to upgrade to a different Berkey model - the rest of the containers are stainless steel. I didn't think this was a coincidence so I wanted to pass this info on. Not bashing the product - the filters are GREAT! Just concerned about that plastic.
Oh, and Crystal, I just wanted to mention after reading your response to someone's comment...
My daughter (two months younger than Kathrynne) was helping herself and knocked ours over on herself. Granted, ours is up high and I think she may have tipped it because the bottom chamber was almost empty (she's seen me do that), but it broke one of our filters and water went everywhere. Praise God she was okay except for a little bump. I just thought I would mention that - not meaning to scare you or necessarily say that Kathrynne shouldn't help herself. Just wanted to mention what happened to us. :)
Hi- Citrus Mint and immune Booster for me! Looks delicious! Jennifer-

***Crystal, were you drinking a lot of the peppermint tea when you had your milk supply problems? I was cross-checking the herbs with kellymom.com to see which ones were OK and peppermint came up as NOT OK.
I think in small amounts it probably wouldn't hurt much (especially with an older baby) but something to consider.
That said, I'd love the Daily Nourishment and the Sleepy Time tea (of which I would partake in moderation). :>) Thanks!
I'd pick the sleeptime tea and the immune booster.
Lenetta: My milk supply problems were related to how sick I was because a few days of rest and good nourishment completely fixed it. From what I've studied a 1-2 cups of Peppermint tea won't hurt one's milk supply so I don't think there was any relation there, though I did stop drinking it for a few weeks just to make sure.
I think it would have to take an awful lot of peppermint tea to affect your milk supply! i have never had any trouble and I drink quite a bit of peppermint tea mixed with red raspberry during pregnancy and after.
Lemony Ginger tea sounds good!
I had the blessing to work with Vlad and Joy on a article and ad we did in TEACH magazine and I was so impressed with their site! Everyone needs to have a visit!

I think I would pick Blues Brew and Sweet Sleep teas. But their water purification system is what really is drawing me in. I wish the 10% promotion was for another week or so, I would use part of our stimulus check to buy one of them! I am really impressed with their claims. We use a cistern and have been looking for a way to purify our water at a reasonable cost.
i am so excited to see this site. i love tea. i would have to say the childrens composition and the blues brew. sometimes the two go hand in hand. sick baby=blue mommy. God bless-
