Home Education at Our House: C is for Caterpillars
(Don't pay attention to the fact that this is actually the lesson for last week's "B is for Butterflies"! I meant to post this picture along with it and forgot to! I use the planner pages from GraceWorks to write up our weekly lesson plans and then keep all of the books we'll be using that week in a big basket in our living room.)Week #3: The Letter "C"
Bible Time: Read one story from the Bible and review ABC Bible verse book
Memory Verse: "Children obey your parents in the Lord for this is right."
Character Theme: Obedience using story/poem from Teach Them To Your Children
Song: "Children Obey Your Parents"
Letter Review: ABC letter-readings from Alpha-Phonics (at the back of the book for those who have this book--I just have her read half a page per day and plan to review these at least a few times per week while we're studying A, B, and C. We'll continue on like this with each letter so that in 26 weeks, she should be very familiar with all the letters and their sounds).
Nature Study: Caterpillars (We checked out books from the library on butterflies/caterpillars and are also raising our own butterflies using this kit, thanks to Jesse's family. It's been incredibly fascinating for the whole family to watch the caterpillars turn into chrysalises!)
Books to Read (1-3 per day, all somehow related to obedience):
Keep The Lights Burning, Abbie--we love this book and would highly recommend it!
Make Way for Ducklings
Just Four*
Molly Helps Mother*
Happy Helpers*
Helping Mother*
*These are Little Jewel books (highly recommended!) available from Rod and Staff Publishers.
Also Read:
Ox-Cart Man--we really enjoyed this book, too. Thanks to those who recommended it.
Lengthier Book to Finish (read a chapter or so per day): The Family Under the Bridge
********************
Related: I loved Monica's post here on teaching the ABC's to her young daughter in a fun way--very inspiring!
And just for fun, here are a few pictures I took during the parade in our community on the Fourth of July:

Aren't they just precious? I especially love the last picture! Kathrynne's hair is growing longer and it still has some nice natural curl in it and I have so much fun fixing it and then oohing and aahing over how cute she is. :) If only I were a bit more adept at hair-styling--pony-tails, clippies, and braids are about the extent of my limited repertoire!Labels: Home Education at Our House, Pictures

Looks like you had a wonderful 4th. I happened on your site just when I needed a little spiritual revivement. God Bless you!

Awww...I can't wait until Liam is old enough next year to take him to the Parade! :) I still can't believe how big Kaitlynn has gotten - but then again, Liam turns one next month, and I'm still reeling from that thought!
Also, your hubby and mine need to talk...I know yours loves to eat, and so does mine, but they always look so skinny! I've even taken to using heavy whipping cream in sauces that call for milk, to no avail. He's 6 feet tall, and 151 pounds.
*sigh* Oh, to be blessed with a metabolism like that, no?
Oh, I loved "Make way for Ducklings", growing up! And anything else by Robert McCloskey, for that matter. Have you tried "Blueberries for Sal"? It's a sweet book about a mother and daughter who go berry picking...and meet a bear.
Cute pictures!
I can't tell you how many times we read the Ox Cart Man.
By the way my husband is employed-YEAH!
What a fun lesson! We grew our own butterflies. I have pictures on my blog. You can see how it turned out for us. http://weblog.xanga.com/TrentTribe/660724285/lesson-of-the-butterflies.html We made it an object lesson about salvation. Have fun!

Ponytails on little girls are soooo cute, including on your girl!
Thanks for sharing the peek into your homeschooling week again!
I'm curious as to your homeschooling approach or view now. It seems with the nature/science study and read alouds you are following a bit of the Charlotte Mason method as well as "formal academics" via the phonics and letter work.
I know at one time you had said you and Jesse were interested in the Classical and Charlotte Mason methods.
My heart is really leaning towards a Charlotte Mason approach with my 3-year-old, with less "workbook" learning in the early ages. However, husband is only looking toward homeschooling for preschool and then public school for Kindergarten and beyond. I don't want her to be behind when she starts K but I love the approach of not much "formal" learning till at least 6 years old.
Anyway, sorry for the book! Can you expand on your homeschool method approach and the longview for your girls' schooling?
I thought of another book you might like- Everyday Graces and the name is slipping me at present-the senator's wife from PA compiled it. Love it. T.G.
We really like "Little Jewel Books" at our house too!
And, what great 4th of July, pictures Crystal. Always fun to see your precious family!
We have little girls and I recently came across this blog: shedoeshair.blogspot.com
It is filled with instructions and photos on all sorts of little girl hairstyles. Very sweet and helpful!
Blessings,
Hannah
Looks like you had a great family time over the 4th!
Oh don't feel too bad about your limited repertoire for doing your daughter's hair, because that is about the extent of my repertoire for my daughter's hair. I have tried to work at french braiding her hair but it doesn't look that great so I resort back to the basics that I know...good ol' ponytail! :)
Dear Crystal
You must be doing something or a whole lot of somethings right, your girls always look so happy. Not just the smile that kids do when they take a picture but the real deep down full body smiles that says they are secure and very mucj loved. You will get there with the hair. My sister did when she adopted girls after raising boys. Have a great day.
Love the pictures...they are so precious!
Also my mom used Alpha Phonics for all eight of us children learning to read...I have very fond memories associated with this book! And Keep the Lights Burning Abbie and Make Way for Ducklings...so neat, I can't wait to do all that fun school stuff with my little children too. :-)
I'm not good with hair and have two girls. I have found this site to be so helpful!

Hi Crystal!
I raised caterpillars to butterflies as a kid too and it was so much fun!
I will have to order that kit for my girls...

There are free lapbooks to make for 2-4 year olds here: http://www.homeschoolshare.com/level_1_lapbooks.php . They work great for correlating with books, read.Blessings!
