Making Your Home a Haven on Monday: It's Anti-Procrastination Day!
After the busyness of the last few months, I have a number of projects which were shelved for more important things. Now that life has become a bit more calm, these projects are calling my name to tackle--the piles of garage sale stuff in the basement I need to sort and box up for our next garage sale; the garage which needs straightened, swept, and organized; the flower gardens in the front and back in dire need of weeding; the carpet in our bedroom seriously needing to be steamed; and about twenty-five other things if I were to sit here for another moment and keep typing.
I know there is no way I can start and finish my mile-long list today, but I'm going to make a goal to start and finish at least one project I've been procrastinating on. I'll post my progress this afternoon.

Good morning, Crystal,
When I saw the title of your post, the first words I spoke were, "Oh no!" My husband and I were just talking about procrastination. Sometimes we have very valid reasons for putting projects off, but more often than not, we make up excuses for not getting things done. My husband is very busy with a new job, part-time school and websites, but he has decided to tackle one small project each day. I'm so proud of him. I have 5 children with one on the way, so I am very busy and sometimes exhausted, but before I begin my regular home school year, I'm determined to tackle my projects. Your post is just the extra push I need to keep going. Thank you. Maybe we can consider anti-procrastination day as "redeeming the time". Yes, let's tackle our home projects, but maybe we can also take the time to call a friend today, write that encouraging letter we've been putting off, pray for a lost loved one, put together a care package for a missionary. There are countless other things we could include. I'm going to ask the Lord what He thinks is the most important today. May God bless you!
I have no choice but to not procrastinate right now. We are leaving with our four children for three months across the world ... in seven days. I'm trying to figure out how to make my home a haven when my bedroom is strewn with suitcases and all the clothes I'm packing, the table is covered with all the miscellaneous stuff I'm packing, one of the other bedrooms is covered with one child's clothes that I'm going through in order to pack him ... and the counters have piles of papers and information! I don't like living like this! I think my only hope is to just keep a cheerful attitude and clean up what CAN be cleaned up while all this is going on. I don't want to upset all my children by everything feeling in chaos for too long!
I still have many projects to work on in September, but this week I am working on creating a system to keep our home clean and running smooth. So far it is working!

This helped me get up and start the day off well, Crystal. I'm on a roll. Thank you for helping me "Make My Home a Haven" and bless my niece, too.
Huh? Steaming your carpet? Is this something that people regularly do? Just asking, because while I vacuum, I've never given steaming a thought. Do you have to rent a steamer, or do you own one?
How do you steam your carpet? Do you have a carpet steamer that you own or do you rent from the grocery store or have a service do it? I've been looking for the most frugal way to steam our carpets.
Thanks!

Crystal,
do you have your own carpet steam cleaner, or do you rent or borrow one? My carpet needs steam cleaning but not sure how to do it on a budget.
Thanks,
Christy
I am hoping to tackle cleaning out the kids' closets today and sorting keepers for future children and those items for a yard sale. Hopefully it'll get done!
I feel the same way! We just got back into town last night, and the house is a mess. If I could finish one job today, I would be thrilled!
To answer the questions on the carpet cleaner:
Since we have two young (and messy!) children and live in a home with mostly carpet, we decided it was worth the investment to buy a carpet cleaner about a year and a half ago.
It has been very worth the investment, we think. Not only does it allow us to do one room at a time, instead of the whole house (like we'd have to if we were to rent one), but we can do it as we have time. And we can use it as often as we'd like!
For those of you on a budget, you might check and see if any of your friends or neighbors own a carpet cleaner. Perhaps they'd let you borrow one in exchange for you cleaning their carpets with it, too. :)
thanks for your answer, crystal! so helpful. sounds good!
my dad has two dogs and two young kids at home still...and he uses a steam cleaner daily he said!

Thank you for this post! I have been putting so much off and this helped to motivate me to get going. And I am on a roll!
Hah! I didn't even finish reading your post but went to the comments section and realized that you must have read my mind! I desperately need to steam clean my carpets as well, and now that my two oldest boys are at school, there's less foot traffic, and I might be able to get it done--maybe even today, although I have a toddler and newborn to manage! I wholeheartedly agree with you about investing in a steam cleaner. I often stop women at the department store who are registering for baby items and tell them to put a carpet cleaner on their baby registry! They will outgrow the diaper genie and the baby swing, but they'll never outgrow the steam cleaner! It's the gift that keeps on giving.
That's my two cents. Now off to get those carpets clean...
